Are you kidding? Every board I checked had speculation on N97 being $800-1000 on launch. The price is only going to go down.
Eldar also notes that the entry price is much cheaper than expected. They did that by not buffing up some specs that probably need to be buffed. But even sr doesn't think it's a simple hardware issue, but a firmware one (similar to how Eric noted that N96 was essentially unusable until firmware 20). Is it a high price? Sure, for alot of capability above that of both N95 and XM. It's incremental increase for sure.
Right, but OLED isn't new. And 8mp isn't new. Putting them together is synthesis, not innovation, isn't it? Otherwise, isn't it just as fair to give N97 credit for putting 3.5" touch screen (resistive or no), 32GB, 5mp, and QWERTY all together in one package with AT&T NAM 3G? Anyone here could have an iPod, point and shoot, dumb phone, tablet PC, etc that destroy those points individually but they're now carrying multiple devices.
N97 is only getting cheaper from this point on. I'm not saying the Omnia is crap and it's certainly a valid choice, but you're also sacrificing more than just the 850 band, but also QWERTY and more than a few GB of storage to get your grip on that beautiful screen and great camera features, thus losing out on the music and texting preferences of others.
