*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

I don't see a spot in individual widgets to set it... nor have I found a collective place to set them. I was able to set the "Internet" in Destinations, which has both my Home Wifi (priority 1) and T-Mo (priority 2) set.

Browser/Settings/General lets you select "Access Point" which is defined in Destinations.

Settings/Connectivity/Administrative Settings/Packet Data lets you set "Packet data" to either "When needed" or "When Available" (the latter gives always available data at the cost of battery life). I was having issues with my widgets until I set the access point in Settings/Connectivity/Administrative Settings/Access point

Has been interesting to note my own oscillations on switching. At home, through the wifi everything is great, of course, but I was first committed to staying on T-Mo because of my great grandfathered voice plan. Then I knew I wanted 3G for the times I didn't have wifi. Then I knew I would regret losing the voice plan for well less than 1/3 of the anytime minutes and no night and weekends for more money. Then I was for sure going for 3G again. I haven't bothered getting cleared and authorized for the wifi at work and have been pleasantly surprised with the performance of the T-Mo EDGE. Doesn't seem nearly as slow as my coworker on the 2G iPhone, though obviously slower than the coworker with the iPhone 3G.

Why they did that is beyond me but those devices wont do me anygood because it dont have the same screen and feature set of the n97 :buddies:

I will probably do that. Does anyone know if NokiaUSA charges a restocking fee for returning an unopened phone?

I was thinking of taking delivery of the NokiaUSA order, and not opening it (awaiting Amazon's shipment) and if Amazon, for some reason does not deliver, I will still have the Nokia order.

I gotta chime in here about the responsiveness and web browsing. Even myself complained about the 5800 the first 2 days. But i can quite honestly say that i am able to fly thru the menus on this 5800 now. Its implementation is not bad at all. The web browser is good as well. If you have any unresponsive its because the download meter at the top is still loading. But most of the time i can scroll just fine before its finished loading.

Typing, texting, all of it is very responsive on this phone. And its very very friendly for one handed use. And i get to use t9. I love it. Best web experience on any s60 phone i've ever used.

I expect the n97 to be exactly the same in all areas of the OS, except the browser will have kinetic scrolling on the n97.

I also find that the way in which they designed s60 with touch on top really is the best way they could have done it. The scroll bar is so easy to drag the menu that it doesn't slow down anything for me. So for better or worse, you guys should plan on the n97 to operate identical to the 5800 in terms of OS and screen sensitivity.

yeah i was waiting for people to play with it as well so i could get a feel on what other people think, but i searched around and i don't see any other phone that i want with a kb, gps and tv-out.

Best advice, most likely. Some previews have been positive... a couple negative accounts (not by IIRC any of the major blogs), but I have to be skeptical when they're mostly by people have been against the phone all along. I'll believe it's really bad when:1) I try it myself or 2) Blaxx says it sucks. :D

I think I'm just optimistic. I'm hoping to hear something that makes the device desirable enough to buy again, because I still want it.

Believe me, when weighing all of the pros of the N97 over the i8910 (Ovi/app support, dual-band UMTS, 32gb onboard storage, $600 pricetag, available now, hardware keyboard, sexier design, proper audio in video recording, etc.), it's easy for me to want it all over again. It's just the cons that keep reminding me not to get it. :(

JBTaskMan .. or Handy Task.

A few things have me worried and looking away from the N97 ...

What the FRAK is Nokia software/firmware engineers doing with this?!?!! This better be fixed else a lot of sales will be going elsewhere.

Yeah easier updates is a must nowadays. It lets the user choose the OS version or customizations they want. The Quickpwn illustration is so idiot proof its funny. It times everything for you. :hehehe:

About the MfE implementation on the 5800, I agree that it does't appear to be that bad. When I initially did the research I expected an N-series implementation where real estate was grossly misused and was pleasantly surprised with the implementation on the 5800. However, I still have time stamp data available on the E series device and MfE is still lacking HTML which has been a complaint of mine since I started using this at rev 1.2. I'm hoping that Nokia Messaging from the E75 is coming to the N97 which I believe will help with the HTML issue. Hell, they can't even support subfolders which still boggles my mind.

Server search doesn't do me any good. My corporate policy on mailbox size is so small that I have to archive once a week. My phone can keep a better mail history than the server which is pretty sad.

Either way, Nokia does spend some amount of time optimizing the UI and information presented for business with their E-series. Whether they are keeping up with features from other companies has yet to be seen as far as released products. I plan on waiting until the end of the year to play with the N97 so I guess I have until then to see what Nokia does as far as a large screen business device.
