*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

I think it was Symbian-Guru that compared N85 NAM (850mhz, 1900, 2100) to a Euro N85 (900, 1900, 2100) traveling through NYC. He had large areas without 3g coverage on the Euro N85. His conclusion was, don't buy Euro tri band UMTS phones if you want good 3g.

As time progresses I suspect you'll see more and more UMTS rolled out on 850mhz, especially in rural locations. In the city they want it for penetration, and rurally for better coverage distance. So it's very desirable.

In NZ I had 3g coverage from 2100mhz in town, but Vodafone NZ covered all rural locations with 900mhz UMTS. Wife was gloating with her near continuous 3g coverage.

@ Blaxx & Oddsocks ... I swear you guys remind me of the guys in the balcony from The Muppet Show! When you guys get into a rhythm the comedy is excellent! Spot on too.

However, sr1329 has some worthwhile debate, recently. He's not gonna get me to switch into an iPhone - not by a long shot! If he can refine is hatred for S60 then presented to Symbian Foundation maybe he'll be a fully satisfied fan of S60 - he still uses S60 devices btw, so Nokia MUST be doing something right. It must pain him to admit it though.

@arjwright, the N97 will NOT be based off the Symbian Foundation's OS; just S60 5th Edition refined. Symbian Foundation ^2 will go 'gold master' around the same time the N97 begins to ship - but for company's or providers (NTTDoCoMo) planning on implementing it will first provide feedback - then modify it with a layer of their choice - and revisions will be released over the following 6mths. Don't expect a Symbian-Foundation OS device to ship until Late August 2009 at the earliest.

I took a close up look at the N97 qwerty picture on my E71 and just now noticed that the period and comma are on the same key. I guess having to press the shift key shouldn't be too much of big deal in writing lengthy emails and docs.

I have been really spoiled with the layout of the E71.

Class 4 should be fine. Even some class 2 cards are okay, but the general rule is to keep it 4 or above. Also make sure it's an authentic card. Some fake cards have incorrect class numbers on them.

It sure seems a little bit like nitpicking from my part, but doesn't it constitute false advertising? I mean, I'm in no particular hurry to get the phone but it's clearly stated in their website "Be the first to get your hands on the new Nokia N97". One would hope they'd have the phones available at least at the same time as other American vendors.

Do not forget that the N97 as we know it today is an early prototype.
Final unit in terms of hardware is expected late February with mid March.
Until then do not exclude anything. Many things can be change. We do not know what processor it will have, everything is possible, we do not know the amount of RAM it will carry 128 or 192MB etc. Lets wait and see. Probably many of our questions will be answered in a few weeks in Mobile World Congress.

nah I use it alot too. I've just had the X1a since Tuesday, been playing with it since but I don't see anything moving me away from the Bold, except maybe for the N97.

I just got bored and got the X1a as a toy to hold me over till the N97 drops. I really dig some things about the X1a, in terms of build quality it is top notch, if it ran S60 and had a 5mp camera with Zeiss lens it might be perfect. love the WVGA screen.

This is amazing, there will finally be one device available that fits all my needs.

No more sacrificing QWERTY for a nice camera.

No more sacrificing a high-resolution screen for US 3G.

No more jealousy toward the WM home screen.

:clapping:

The only thing I would add is xenon.

I think they needed to in order to keep the excitement up for S60v5. The 5800 implementation is the most basic transliteration of S60 to touchscreen IMHO. Nothing innovative in it really.

It's been said enough that the N97 is launching globally with both versions available at the same time so enough of that. OmniaHD was never given an expected release date or a price (They didn't even say Q2/Q3 2009). Technically, no one knows if it's even coming out lol.

Except those without a slider could just press one of the numbers in their keypad and it would also be a "single click" instead of using the d-pad to get to those apps. The only advantage the 5800 has here is that we get 12, whereas phones with a keypad only get 9.

If this phone can't fit into your pants pockets then I think that's a sign that your pants are too tight :D

I'm playin, to each his own. I love it but there are those who equally hate it and thats fine. Announcements like this are always fun regardless

Last summer my best buddy and I through a few events [April - late November] of underground house music jam. House Your Body. Took us a while but got VERY good and met some really talented and cool DJ's from the Toronto scene.

We used FaceBook as our landing page on times, DJ lineup, Event Notices, Thank you shout outs, and of course invites - besides the flyer junk. I hated handing out Flyers so we posted around U of T for 1 day that was it. FaceBook and our hospitality and a REAL bartender (a man's man - who knows how to handle the drunks - when he's not lol - and keeps the ladies chill with drinks; no bullsh*tt*r) did the rest.

Heck if you wanted to through a meetup event this site and then FaceBook could open up the door to more. Many of my friends & colleges can barely use the phone during work hours for more than a few simple minutes; but sms/web/mms/email is more feasible.

Twitter - I'm not sure I'll ever use it - I have enough notifications than a beep beep or to highlight a vacation or road trip to twit about. MySpace is older than FaceBook and more focused on Music fans and producers, DJ's etc.

will these areas of the homescreen that in the demo are devoted to social networking be customizable? I use facebook and all but I dont need a quarter of my screen devoted to the site or updates or any of that nonsense, same for myspace.
