*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

I still don't understand why they decided to put that space bar on the extreme right side? We all are used to the space bar in the middle, moving to different location always makes it hard to type. Sure we will get used to it, but why to force that adjustment? Why not keep that space bar in the middle & move the other keys to the right. Is that hard to implement?

They keep on saying "tuned", but i'm almost positive it's still using the 32bit Freescale MXC300-30 chipset with a 369MHz Arm 11, the same rehashed chipset by on the E71, N85, XpressMusic 5800, etc. etc.

There are the specs of the MXC300 chipset. Maximum processor speed is 532 mhz. If you look at their roadmap you can see the DSP for hardware encoding, etc. but there's no sight in hardware accelleration other than the Integrated processing unit for video, most likely for codecs and stuf. There's no seperate chip that handles 3d acceleration, like the OMAP series chipset offers. Very disappointing.

but.......things arent all that bad because

Taken from wikipidea concerning the PowerVR graphics chip, the N97 may be the rumored N series touchscreen device that will use the OMAP3430 chipset with the next generation Power VR graphics chip. So who knows, things may change.

I love my N82 keyboard and I remember a lot of people criticizing it when it came out, so I definitely reserve my judgment about N97 keyboard until I try it by myself.

Just as an aside, those of you with an agnostic approach to phones should check out the Palm Pre video on tnkgrl as well. Lots and lots to see and learn. Pretty cool devices both of them. Amazing gestures engine and the menu ribbon is awesome.

EDIT: I will admit that their pushing this cards concept is a little annoying since basically the only thing it offers more than the long press menu key switch we have is the fact that it shows an image of the application or screen. We get the point about multitasking.

There is enough money to be made for everyone, just coz banks get robbed once in a while, you don't see them closing down .. do we...

3 out of 10 people may buy the software legally... that is enough incentive for the developers...

not justifying anything though.

what bothers me is that they have the capability to put in a 8megapixel camera, so why not put it in YOUR FLAGSHIP DEVICE THATS PROBABLY GOING TO COST ~$1000!!!! that drives me crazy :) how much extra do you really think it would have cost nokia to use the n86's 8megapixel camera instead of the old 5? not much.. and unfortunately its your way of thinking that makes nokia not really care about getting better..

You can't be serious there.

Allaboutsymbian saved me some time re-listing them as they did a great job summarizing the differences between the N97 and and 5800, here is a copy and paste:
  • a larger screen (3.5" rather than 3.2")
  • 32GB of internal flash memory (yes, 32 GIGABYTES)
  • a functional slide-out qwerty keyboard
  • a mechanical d-pad for game playing
  • a more sensitive resistive touchscreen layer
  • a much better stills camera (5 megapixels, large aperture)
  • a metal screen surround, with higher quality buttons and better build quality generally
  • microUSB charging
  • a compass
  • a bigger battery (1500mAh, rather than 1320mAh)
  • a new, much better widget-based homescreen
  • N-Gage applications, the Nseries image gallery and other associated applications
  • improvements to Web, with kinetic scrolling
  • Faster Processor
  • Triband 3G
  • Built-in FM Transmitter
The last three are added by me

The list goes on...

This is really funny..firstly, Nokia knows how to string something along real well...kinda like that stupid American Idol host...and 2nd: It looks like it is going to ship real soon so let's just sit back and relax..a few more days or a week in the big picture is no biggie!

Don't worry. The N97 will be an excellent phone with a lot of internet capabilities. There is no other phone on the market today other than the Omnia HD and the Apple iPhone which has a BIG SCREEN. The most important thing for me about the N97 is for it to have an excellent signal for making and receiving calls and ALSO excellent internet capabilities with a large user friendly screen. I don't care if it doesn't have the OMLED capacitive screen. I care more about being able to surf the internet and for the phone to be able to respond quickly and to not freeze when opening webpages and when downloading large websites. I purchased the N97 for using it as regular phone and also as my mini laptop computer. Right now, I'm using the Samsung Eternity as my primary phone and internet and I like it a lot. The N97 is a thousand times better than the Eternity and it's got more features and options on it. I think that the N97 an excellent choice for me for what I need it for.

I wish you could swipe down and go directly into a "homescreen" that has a widget of your last 5 called contacts + a widget of you SMS inbox + in device search + personal e-mail + file browser or whatever you want. Another could be music + video + radio + games.

If they gave us more pages and widgets that can intelligently link to on device data in whatever way you prefer + internet data it would rule. I could have a widget that filters e-mail from particular people at work and puts them on a Widget. That way I will always have the information I need if my boss has something I need to get done.

If they add a gestures framework to this, it will CRUSH the competition. For example on the facebook widget what if tap is to open the widget, but swipe left-right is to only open a mini-window of new notifications? Maybe right-to left could switch between facebook accounts or networks. Gestures will make interaction with the screen limitless. Applications could let you assign your personal commonly-used functions to pre-saved gestures.

The framework could let you program custom gestures which could be anything you want. It would then make you repeat it 3 times and save it similar to how a modern fingerprint reader stores your fingerprint data.
