*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

At this stage they haven't worried about FCC submission, though that is part of the development process, to design to minimize the spurious radiation the phone has. They likely have their own internal lab where they take a preliminary look to see what kind of spurs they need to address in design. Compliance testing (FCC/ETSI/SAR) is one of the last stages before the device is fully ready for sale/production.

Probably not. I think two things drove them out of the S60 market.

  • People who buy S60 phones just don't install software. Most S60 phones are used as dumbphones.
  • Nokia's shipping a map/GPS client with their phones. It may not be as good as TomTom, but it's very hard to compete with the guys who make the OS. Just ask Corel and Lotus.

Bugelrex, one reason for resistive also _still_ (even with a hardware qwerty) the fact that China is Nokia's biggest market for the N Series (i.e. handwriting recognition is not marginal a feature as it is in most other markets).

I remember the looks and questions I'd get when I pulled out my N95. "Blaxx, what phone is this?" *turns over the phone* "Whoa, 5 megapixels"

Sigh. I miss those days.

Oh well, the E71 still gets as much attention. As soon as someone sees it, they want to touch it. And as soon as they touch it, they want one.

Just bought a white N97 NAM. I was wondering for those of you who have the NAM version, does it have the little silver triangle on the bottom right side? (Top right on the linked pic) Hopefully not?

Question that I have not seen answered definitively by a member who actually owns the black N97.....

Is the back cover actually sticky like the N95? The reason I ask is I saw 1 member say the display model was like that in NYC, but my white N97 is smooth. It's not coated at all.

Thanks in advance.

John

Probably still the same since you can't see it anyways..

Like what Jonybruha said.. They probably change something in the hardware that make the battery less consumption.

hahahaha - on BGR

"We?re sort of a little speechless right now, as we have official confirmation that Nokia is the most peculiar handset manufacturer in the world, ever. You?re Nokia. You?ve got a very good idea that Samsung will be announcing the sexiest Symbian handset of all time (OmniaHD) at MWC this year. It?s got the goods in nearly every area imaginable (though a keypad might be nice). Your upcoming flagship Nseries, the N97 is old news so you can?t rely on it as your big announcement at MWC. You?ve got a handful of ho-hum handsets spread out on your table alongside your first 8 megapixel offering with an AMOLED display, aGPS, a digital compass, an FM transmitter, a battery yielding up to 25 hours of audio playback and what looks to be configurable color-changing keypad lighting. What do you do? Well apparently you take the most interesting unannounced handset you?ve got, the 8 megapixel N86, and show it off in Singapore at something called Showcase Nokia 2009. For real? Even if Nokia does make the handset official tomorrow or Wednesday at MWC, it doesn?t make this peculiar move any more reasonable. On a related note, sources are telling us that Nokia may be announcing its first 12 megapixel handset, the Nwtf, at the Shady Acres senior center next month. Prune juice will be served. Hit the jump for more shots, and hit yourself in the head repeatedly if you were involved with the decision making process at Nokia that lead to this debacle."

ok yea, I'll admit the "phone" part of it will be... different, lol, will have to go will headsets all the time.

ouu, trying to blast me off? lol. Might be useless, perhaps, but explain the irrelevance of my comment debating agaisnt an argument that is consistently present (and annoying) in this threat.

oh, and please find another way to sell your nintendo and little princesses games... I don't think you'll find much little girls on this site.

I dunno, I don't really see them as competing handsets, the N97 is clearly a high-end phone with top of the range features, while the Impression (though nice) is clearly a mid-range handset with so-so features. The only thing in common really is the sliding QWERTY.

Here's a bit more info about the N97 that I had the privilege to mess around with today. It was the charcoal black version (which really is more like a dark grey) running very early software and final hardware.

I didn't have very high expectations for the software because it was one of the older versions, but it still did okay. There was nothing I did on it that really wowed me at all. Everything took an adequate amount of time to do and it was about as fast as the 5800XM. I have a feeling the speed has improved with the final production firmware, or at least I hope it has.

The screen was not the hard plastic like on the eternity. It felt very similar to the 5800XM but the touch layer seemed closer to the screen. It helped sensitivity, but as I said, you'll still know it's a resistive screen. It's still the same delicate, thin level of plastic on top.

The keyboard really let me down though. I am using the keyboard on my N810 now to type this (I hate it), but it is MUCH better than the N97's. The keys were not very raised and I had a hard time feeling whether or not I had actually pressed the button down. The keys aren't too small, but noticeably smaller that the keys on the E75, E90, and the N810. The space bar wasn't too bad on the right because your thumb tends to rest there when you hold it open, but it still suffered from the lack of tactile feedback and it's still weird to have it there. Without a virtual keyboard, I stringly urge you guys to remember your return policy because the keyboard could be a deal breaker for you.

Only other impression was that it's still very hot looking. It's thick, but not too thick, and overall not too big. If you are comfortable with an iPhone in your pocket, this won't be a problem at all.

I will try to answer more questions if you guys have any, but it may be hard for me because all I have is my N810 tethered to my W580 over EDGE for my stay out here. No wifi. :(
