*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

Anyone like me unable to delete vids in "Videos and TV"? I cannot delete from some reason, even tho the videos has been deleted in the podcast app. In "Videos and TV", the thumbnail still shows up and when I try to delete, it says unable to delete, file is open.

There is a new Samsung slate style Andriod device coming out in July. No chin. 3.2 inch AMOLED screen, 5 MP camera with LED, 3.5 mm jack, 8 GB memory, microSD slot, the usual goodies (Wifi, GPS, 3G).

Had they left the browser as is then wouldn't have been trying, but still if you read the comments at AAS, you'll see that many are asking for system level kinetic scrolling. I am asking for that + system level gestures support. That is the only way to have best in class touch support on a device.

I think its possible that I'll never get used to the keypad. It's kinda uncomfortable, and I can visualize at some point never even opening it up. Hopefully an onscreen qwerty is in a future upgrade

Wait, the contacts application doesn't support the keyboard for quickly jumping to letters or even searching?

That blows. How could they miss that? Didn't other S60 phones work that way?

I had so low expectations regarding the qwerty keyboard that when I tried it I found it... GREAT!!!!!
In my humble opinion, it's better than the one on the E90 (not too much hand travel needed) and in fact, the best keyboard I've ever had so far. Big enough to be able to touch each key and small enough to be comfortable.
Rest assured, my friends. The keyboard is not as bad as people have been saying (my opinion, of course).

The whole premise of this phone is that widget subsystem, when I saw it my g-d, what a disappointment. You can display less information than I see on the screen of the E66. If you need e-mail and contacts (since E66 has contact search it never needs that space) and an applications bar, and then if you add search or calendar that leaves you with space for ONE widget.

At what cost? Pretty much the same or less information on a screen that is nearly twice as big. The home screen is quite cluttered and frankly ugly. The home screen can best be described as unaesthetic at the least.

You are right they basically are begging for a 3rd party solution. The problem being a 3rd party solution will cost $50 and likely not have the ability to be as integrated as a 1st party solution.

I feel everything we are seeing is just proof that S60/Symbian Foundation (same **** different name) is simply not up to the task to compete with modern UIs at all.

Why should the weather widget take an entire bar? I mean all I need is a number and maybe a symbol. Why can't that just be displayed in a top right status corner along with data and notifications?

Why didn't they think of resizable widgets or half-sized widgets?

Frankly prefer a regular active standby screen over that cluttered mess. There is no customization on appearance of any of those widgets either. It's like your phone launching with Widsets as the active standby screen basically.

^ i wouldnt take the iphone or the pre for $700 either. I would say that the omnia hd is leading edge given that its the first phone to take video in HD. it also has a top end camera and a massive capacitive amoled screen. i would pay 700 for it, but its not nam. im not sure how you say its not leading edge, just about every feature it has is top of the line.

I don't think anyone is asking Nokia to write every single widget. And I don't think asking for the ability to view e-mails/calendar/weather/shortcuts plus a couple of dynamic widgets is "SO specialized".

What dissapoints me is that as it stands it right now, you have to choose between the two. For a company that is so intent on proclaiming the widgets and this new home screen as some sort of revolution, I think as it stands they've made some short-sighted decisions.

After reading the developers documents, it seems that writing widgets and their home screen counterparts (which is just a non-interactive info display of the actual widget or app) is pretty easy (for a decent web developer). And over time, HOPEFULLY there will be widgets that are smaller but there are no guarantees. And since these widgets are non-interactive, it really defeats some of the purpose of the dynamic widgets when you have to cram 3 widgets into the space that one currently takes up (or 2). Sure for weather, the clock - doing that makes sense. But for the truly dynamic stuff, they need to be of a certain height/width and that is why you've seen the AP widget or the Myspace or Bloomberg all have the same size.

And I don't think it is such a crime to expect the out-the-box experience of such a highly touted features (all showcased widgets are the same size which makes the 5 widgets limitation the issue) to be a little bit more refined.

And what is wrong with criticisms of the phone ? Apart from sr's essays and a few select posts, I think the criticisms are well founded.

As I said earlier, I don't think I'm pissing in anyone's cheerios esp. because even though as it stands there are a few dissapointments with this phone, I am willing to wait for the first few reviews and user experiences before I write it off my list. And even if my dissapointments remain, I might still get it because the competitors in this segment aren't perfect either.

I used to all the time. I was always blowing up Ngage to see what's new and before that, I loved playing Global Race and looking for other games to play. Most of them weren't very good before Ngage, but I got a lot of use out of emulators.

Now? I haven't owned an S60 device that can handle those same games properly since an N95, so I don't game at all. I'm looking forward to hacking Ngage onto the OmniaHD so I can mess around with them again.
