I don't think anyone is asking Nokia to write every single widget. And I don't think asking for the ability to view e-mails/calendar/weather/shortcuts plus a couple of dynamic widgets is "SO specialized".
What dissapoints me is that as it stands it right now, you have to choose between the two. For a company that is so intent on proclaiming the widgets and this new home screen as some sort of revolution, I think as it stands they've made some short-sighted decisions.
After reading the developers documents, it seems that writing widgets and their home screen counterparts (which is just a non-interactive info display of the actual widget or app) is pretty easy (for a decent web developer). And over time, HOPEFULLY there will be widgets that are smaller but there are no guarantees. And since these widgets are non-interactive, it really defeats some of the purpose of the dynamic widgets when you have to cram 3 widgets into the space that one currently takes up (or 2). Sure for weather, the clock - doing that makes sense. But for the truly dynamic stuff, they need to be of a certain height/width and that is why you've seen the AP widget or the Myspace or Bloomberg all have the same size.
And I don't think it is such a crime to expect the out-the-box experience of such a highly touted features (all showcased widgets are the same size which makes the 5 widgets limitation the issue) to be a little bit more refined.
And what is wrong with criticisms of the phone ? Apart from sr's essays and a few select posts, I think the criticisms are well founded.
As I said earlier, I don't think I'm pissing in anyone's cheerios esp. because even though as it stands there are a few dissapointments with this phone, I am willing to wait for the first few reviews and user experiences before I write it off my list. And even if my dissapointments remain, I might still get it because the competitors in this segment aren't perfect either.
