*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

It has to do with distribution sites, not brick and mortar stores. Since the orders are likely handled through a large reseller which have distribution points throughout the country everyone gets to pay sales tax. If you look at Newegg their headquarters are in CA but they charge tax in CA, NJ and TN because that is where their distribution centers are.

Well, to me N Series has always been about quality. First most of N Series are made in Finland, they always have a great camera and video, solid reception, and sturdy build. Nokia has always had the best high end models, just recently the company fell behind in touchscreen. The iPhone is super lame if you think about it, no MMS, no 3rd party apps, crappy 2 mp no autofocus, no video recording, no keyboard, no removable battery, etc etc. The US market is waiting for a good, solid, REAL phone like the N97. If Nokia were to release it on Rogers and AT&T before summer and sell sim free NAM's I think it could be a huge hit. A lot has changed in the NAM market since the last few years.

I'm guessing those are the default themes which don't have wallpapers.

One of the reviews from a russian site had one with a wallpaper. Don't know if S60 supports animated ones.

7.6% still isn't a lot but it still was a much better display than the previous N95. The screen size on the N97 is a good size even if it looks smaller than the iPhone's.

An asian company doesn't care about asia. Good one. My parents who live in bangkok have seen posters and displays for the phone in many places already.

Doesn't have to be that way. I'm just used to the desktop gestures and they're different on the phone. I don't

The vast majority of iPhoners don't jailbreak, though, which means the JB development is probably lucky to be on par with

I definitely see the utility in flick scrolling, but you'd have to admit that most people do it in their browser or maybe pictures. I got it in both of those. Emails to/from my phone don't tend to be that long, so hasn't been an issue. I can see it possibly being an issue for some, but definitely a smaller subset (probably smaller than the amount of people jailbreaking).

You better not like to click folders, cause you just don't have that as an option in most places. lol. My games folder already has 7 or 8, despite minimal interest in gaming (!), and my utilities folder has the same number (also have a temp/test folder with 4 apps in it).

Without VPN, I'm kinda limited, but if I'm on call, I'm generally not relying on my phone, but it's nice to have the option. Apple's genius is in their polish and they do that well. I definitely like my stuff to work and mine does for me. I certainly see that N97 isn't for everyone, though.

Yes, iSMS will work and that's the one I prefer out of them all if threaded SMS is your thing.

Also available is ThreadSMS and Conversations, but neither of those seemed solid enough to use regularly.

I think I am doing the same as cool as the iPhone is it just gets a little frustating that I have to do a work around for everything that comes standard in my daily use, from mms, to full gps . To snap a pick and upload to flickr to changing a song using my Bluetooth headset to adding ringtones ect...

Well that site has been wrong before. Forum Nokia says it's ARM 11 and someone asked the guestion in Barcelona and they said that it got overclocked ARM 11. Same kind of guts as N800 and N810 maybe?

Would be really nice to know it for sure thought :(

EDIT: Actually cpu isn't listed on forum Nokia yet.

More EDIT: Ah it really seems to have tuned ARM 11! Just what in wanted to here. From open q&a

"@dogmann; Nprocessor is getting better, in our case we use tuned ARM11"

The last few reviews have shown a lot more free RAM at boot with the later versions of code. Hope to see this trend continue and that the device is snappy even with a number of widgets running. Since they seem to be web based and small I really wonder how many resources they will take up.

This what I feel about the device, that they are taking their time to make sure the code works well out of the gate. When Nokia announced this phone in December they quoted release in H1 2009 while most companies target a quarter versus a half year. Reading between the lines it seemed like they were targeting a March/April release and if the release slipped into Q2 then they were good for meeting their targets. My thoughts are that they are taking the extra time to ensure the code is really ready and from what we've seen of some of the reviews lately there is a huge improvement on what we've seen a couple months ago. If they can put out release code as good as they did on the E71 I will be extremely happy.

lol if you actually read that thread, I already posted in it. the link i posted refers to prices being at or close to $500. $594 is close to 600. but if the pics posted in the link are that of dell's website, then I guess that is what it was referring to. if not, well then we better find that site.

and before you flip your phones for more money... think of us poor hofers who weren't here for the price glitch!

Not at this stage of the development cycle. If the phone is to be in production within 6 months the economics has already started, and in fact, started a long time ago. The CPU was chosen at the start of the program based on the memory architecture to use, processing power, clock speed, and cost. Once the proto boards are developed there are a number of board spins that are done to troubleshoot digital spurious that couples into the radios. This problem plagues every digital/analog design and the size and compactness of cellular makes this very challenging. A CPU change at this stage of the game will have engineering starting from scratch at keeping the digital spurious from radiating into the analog portion of the design. The density of pins on the CPU package, the amount of traces that need to be laid out to connect the CPU to memory and the radio is too involved for a change at this stage of development. 6 months isn't enough time to get that completed and into production.

Nokia always replaces phones on a consistent basis and sometimes it seems to me like they butcher the market for the original version. You're going to be screwed if you actually plan on spending $1000 on this.

Doubt me all you want, but it's happened with close to every phone.
N93 came out, a few months later the N93i came out.
N95 came out-N95-3 and N95-2 released and fixed the issues with the N95.
N78 released in the spring of last year, N79 released in the fall.
N96 released in the fall, n85 came out at around the same time/few months after for the US AND the n85 is getting replaced by the N85 8MP this summer (the prototypes for the phone were called N85 8MP, not N86 :p )

I wouldn't doubt that an upgrade/better version to this phone will come out before the end of the year/winter. There's a new version of the 5800 coming out later this year too.
