*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

Oh NOES! Auth charge for me today. It's my second one since ordering, but I'm probably behind the rest of you on the queue. Both still "Backordered," always been backordered. D':

We'll have to see how the device actually holds up over a few months though. As much as I want to believe it'll be good, there's going to be some stupid defect I'll find when I have one in my hands that will annoy me.

Saw that the NAM version cleared the FCC...looks like we're heading into game time soon :2thumbs:

I thought the thread isn't about S60, it's about N97. Not trying to weed you out or get rid of you, just genuinely curious on your motivations for continually posting against the phone since you obviously have some apparently irreconcilableconcerns. I agree you're not trolling, but do think you're sometimes toeing the line, either deliberately (or in jest) or perhaps accidentally.

yeah i saw that. i'm gonna try it out when it hits, however i hate being redirected to the wap site. i wish there was more functionality built into the application.

you need leading edge for 700$?
iPhone 3GS is $700...not leading edge...
Palm Pre is around $700...not leadind edge...
Omnia HD...i'm not sure about the price...but not leading edge either, even though it's the most powerful one...
These days, a leading edge phone would cost around $1K+, nobody is gonna release a phone that expensive nowadays...They want to sell the more phones possible to get revenue through their App stores

ps:i'm talkin about unlocked prices here, just looking at the real prices, not the subsidized ones...

I wouldn't say the glass proto people saw is a lie.

Nokia built and test the phone several times before going on to production.

I think they might have considered but stay away from glass because they crack - The glass proto probably fell the drop test, and it's really nasty when glass cracks. (If you seen an iphone that was dropped you'll know what I mean...)

The pastic quality feels good. Maybe next time I'll take out some keys and do a scratch test when nobody's looking... ;)

I had to look into this a bit more since I haven't been involved with WiFi since early revisions of the n draft. In order to be WiFi Certified in 802.11n the device must use spatial multiplexing which requires at least two transmitters and two receivers. The only exceptions to this are handheld devices. This means that they would be WiFi certified supporting a single n channel of 20MHz or 40MHz wide and only require one antenna.

That's what I expected at first, but since they can get WiFi certification as a handheld device for n without the requirement for spatial multiplexing I wouldn't be surprised if they added it to the spec sheet.

That info is: http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/wireless.html

Read the last paragraph.[/QUOTE]

Interesting. Antenna design is challenging enough. I'd like to take one apart to check out their implementation and see what antennas work with which radios. I guess I'll have to track down the internal photos on the FCC site.

Well said, and while three G is very important to some, I totally can understand why, it's just not a reason for me to switch. That said, this new N97 looks to be a really nice addition to nokia's offerings. I'm hearing around $700 for unlocked when released. I'm just not on board for the touch screen experience. I've had many and just don't care for them that much. For one thing, I really like one-handed operation for most things and find it hard with a touch screen. Also, that finger grease. EEWWW!!! I take alot of pride in my phones and keeping them clean is a top priority. I love pushing those buttons anyway.

What you're talking about is completely different. I completely with what you said, but that's not how Nokia handles their products, or at least, not how they've handled them in the past few years.

It's one thing to wait for the next generation of device that has almost a completely different set of features than its predecessor, but to release incremental updates to the same product (Apple style) to fix issues the original had is the problem. This is how Nokia so easily makes their customers beta testers.

^^ ok thanks. Speaking of NM..I checked a couple of folders I want to view on my account online, but they don't show in the NM app on the phone..any ideas? Only folders that show are the usual inbox, sent, deleted, outbox. Oh..I'm using it for my gmail...
