*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

So in 6 months, if/when Nokia releases a proper N97 with 256mb of RAM, maybe a faster processor, and a capacitive touchscreen (all of which making it a completely different experience and being regarded as "what the original should have been") are you going to sit tight with your N97 or spend another $5-700 on the upgrade?

The terms may seem a bit exaggerated, but that's exactly what happened when the N95 was first released. Using the N95-3 compared to the original N95 was a completely different experience with how much they changed and there were no advantages to continuing to use the original N95 at that point (with the exception of more frequent firmware upgrades).

I'd be careful with this. When I pre-ordered a K790a from Amazon back when it was first released, I started out with super saver, then changed to 2-day or something along those lines, and my estimated ship (or maybe delivery, don't remember which) dates got moved back. I called in to ask about it, and they said when you change shipping methods, it moves you to the back of the pre-order line. I'm not sure if this is still how they do things, but I'd call and ask about it before changing to 2-day shipping. Just FYI.

I think the messaging implementation isn't going to be great IMO. There is a clear divide between the E-series and the N-series.

Things like only 1 e-mail widget on the homescreen and no smart dialing (amongst a bunch of other "niggles") have made the N97 less attractive to this E71 user.

Also pretty big reason for drops in sales is the current economy. People don't have the 400-500-600-700 dollars to spend on cell phones even if they are good or bad! So its not just the same old rehash or inferior cell phones that is the culprit.
As for all the talk about other companies like Samsung - People know Nokias and they know that they have been around for a while and they have confidence in the product and Samsung will need to earn that trust from consumers before they can really sell their product even though it has better hardware.

Yep the lack there is because the page haven't loaded enough and in many cases it needs to be loaded all the way to be totally smooth. On the 5800 with V21 web browser really is pretty damn good and is now much better than at the start.

well i drive thru there a few times a week on the 60 going to LA. i PARTICULARLY noticed 850mhz 3g was turned on there a few months ago and i had one of the strongest signals i've ever seen at -49dBm. but i think it was a little east of you, further down the 60. maybe not though. might have very sstrong service there. and 15 dollar unlimited 3g data aint too shabby! i wouldnt worry about voice minnutes. however i have 7pm unlimited nights/weekends so i NEVER have to worry about minutes. then again, i'm up to 5000 roll over min so there's no way i'll ever go over. that's one advantage on ATT, roll over. if your monthly usage varies, roll over will help a lot.

I'm actually annoyed that us Canadians cant get the same/similar price, and import dealers will overprice this phone like no tomorrow. Now I have to work out ways on getting an American address credit card and keeping it with me so when the time comes, I'll jump on it ASAP!

While using my N810 I used the on-screen keyboard and I noticed that they supported the lefties with that and the N800.

i disagree. sure the e71 is incredibly fast running apps and going thru the menus. but you cant even play 1 youtube video without getting "out of memory" errors. more ram is needed for sure.

i don't think the demand will be as high, as AT&T had picked it up so more people new about it and wanted it. iPhone is more of a fad phone, similar to the razr. Great phone, but everyone has it. n97 will be the sleeper phone. hiding in the shadows but stilll kick a$$

I agree..altho email is one of the most important things I use my N95 for, I refrain from any lengthy replies until I get to my lap or desktop. I think if it's a trade off for sturdy mechanism and marginal keyboard I take the mechanism. That being said, a good useable virtual keyboard would be better-doing away with any slide mechanism completely

It answers flaws that their competitors haven't been able to satisfy... either they do a superior camera but sacrifice the keyboard and/or NAM 3G... or both while answering items that Nokia themselves were themselves absent on before (the huge touchscreen - I was amazed at how long it took until ANYONE challenged the iPhone on their screen) and full qwerty together with their high end camera.

Mostly, it doesn't matter if it's S60 or Android or iPhone. The precise problem with iPhone is that you get their one set of hardware with nothing else. If it was Android instead of S60 on N97, I wouldn't really care as long as they're giving me the big touchscreen, the sliding Qwerty, 5mp+ cam, and 3G.

Not unless I was looking for a MacBook Air. :D Just because Nokia has the hubris to call this thing a "computer" doesn't mean I believe them (or care about their marketing angle).

Will it browse the Internet as good as the iPhone? All indications are: yes.
Will it also have a superior camera to anything else available with US 3G? Yes.
Will it have QWERTY to facilitate those who don't like touchscreen-only for text messaging and emails: Yes.

Ultimately, that's what matters most to me and anything else is gravy.

Will it beat the iPhone on the game front? Probably not, but that aspect isn't one bit important to me. I myself usually restrict my gaming on my PS3 or 360 in front of my 60" big screen.

If Ovi-store tanks, I probably wouldn't weep too hard, but then I mostly scorn and sneer the foolish iPhone Nazis at my work for their oooh and ahh over the latest crap app. I expect most of the stuff on Ovi isn't going to have much appeal to me. I might experiment with the oddball theme here and there, but imagine that will get old after a few months and I'll stop. It mostly just needs to perform good as a phone for text/SMS/email and the oddball browsing if I'm bored at work or stuck at the DMV or jury duty or something.

What else will matter? I'm not a big social networking guy (only on LinkedIn so far), but am actually considering starting Facebook just because of this. If it sucks and leads to out of memory errors, I'd probably get rid of the widget. If I can browse the occassional game on ESPN or hit up the radio station or if it will let me leave my iPod classic in the car and replace my need to carry a point and shoot, N97 will have been wildly successful on the convergence front whereas before nothing had a good enough camera or storage to make it even semi feasable. I have alot of music (and a 160GB iPod classic), so don't expect anything to fully succeed but so far this is the closest thing that looks like it has a hope to succeed across the board.

Or I'll ditch it in a year for Idou.
