*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

That's silly. They don't make you use the carrier branded version. My E71 still works just as well as it did before the E71x released.

Of course, for all I know, the E71x might be a better phone. I haven't used it.

My bluetooth headset has been "In Progress" all week. The preauthorization (from 5/18) expired on my CC, though and is back into the available balance (IOW, they didn't charge).

It BETTER ship soon.
I just called Brightpoint to update my shipping method (switch to overnight) and to change my shipping address. Neither one is possible! I'm moving in two weeks...

The old "most-recent" version doesn't work unless you use VirtualKey, but there has been a minor update that does indeed work with touch screen S60 devices. I don't remember the specific model numbers, but the increase was like from x.xxx.20 to x.xx.30.

No, 5th Edition has the same access point grouping features as FP2, so you shouldn't need Psiloc Connect.

No, you're right, but that's hardly the only reason a lot of people are more excited about it than the N97.

Well when I ordered on monday I used the 10% code and I also got the headset. Also ordered a car charger and a extra warrenty and next day air so in the end it came out to $714.

1. Agreed. The Palm will not have as good of a camera. But people could be happy with it as I am with my E66 camera.

2. This will be the best phone for you then.

3. Not really. If you notice whole Xpressmusic line which have some of the best speakers of any phone they end up combining the outputs of both speakers anyway through the battery cover.

4. Well, the Pre has one thing that is more important to some users and it is the portrait form factor with QWERTY. That is more important to me than all this convergence stuff. The cameras and music players on these phones have not yet gotten to the point that they could replace separate devices for me yet. I had an N95 years ago and as far as convergence is concerned this device brings nothing new to the table. This device is about interface as is the Pre as is the iPhone. It is about human-device interaction. So I've been down that road before and all I can say is that for me it was just nice to have all that in one device, but I use an E66 now. It serves me far better than the N95 did.

I'd be very interested in that report Blaxx. What I have an issue with is that there is already a quad band antenna in place to support the GSM frequencies which will be the same as WCDMA. There is internal RF switching done to divert the RF to either the GSM or WCDMA radio. I can see that there is a bandwidth difference and the LNA inputs of the WCDMA radios are likely much more susceptible to load changes. If you can dig that up let me know and I'll PM an email address if you don't mind sharing that.

Of course, but see that's exactly why I consider the N97 a flagship in name only. My whole argument against the N97 is that while the rest of the stable ie. N85, N79 etc. have basically become N95 clones in different skins, this new "flagship" is the same thing all over again but introducing a new touch screen.

There should have been more. They are banking on the screen and slide out keyboard which are both very nice. However S60v5 needs work. It's okay to be on a $200 Xpressmusic, but I'm not convinced it is good enough to sit on the flagship yet. So a little hardware improvement over the $300 N79 would have been nice to sweeten the bitter pill that is S60v5.

On the photography side, do you think would Carl Zeiss be rolling in his grave if he knew what crap cameras bear his name? The guy is a lens designer who made precision optics with glass. He would freak out if he knew his name was on some mass-produced plastic thing that costs 25 cents to make.

You're an ex SE guy so I guess all this Nokia stuff is new to you since your platform pretty much died. What I'm trying to say is that you seem to have a death wish in that you are going from on dead platform to the one that's about to die next. :hehehe:

You must have an attraction to platforms that are characterized by hardcore fanboys and the resulting stagnation.

Argggg, i can't take it anymore!!!
Unfortunately I'm not one of you that has a new phone every month or so :P lol
I got the SE K850i when it first came out and I still have it... Been wanting to replace it every since i heard about the SE Paris that got cancelled. Then new phone started coming out every 3 months, replacing whichever came out earlier. But now, nothing can beat N97! Not the iPhone, not the OmniaHD, not the Idou. Maybe an Alienware laptop could beat the N97... maybe...

It just shows that Edward has never used the N97, and his comments should be treated as a joke.

Well that's obviously what I do, it's just that I can't think of any easy verb to use. ;)

Doesn't change the fact that it feels cheap and unreliable from the get-go.
