*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

I always had the impression that the delay in launching the N97 had more to do with Ovi services (whatever it is) being ready than with the device itself. And, if they don't have an acceptable product by now, it says a lot about their competence, or lack thereof.

You guys are really immature if you starting to talk about nationalities... and trust me, this is coming from an immature guy himself, lol. It doesn't matter if you american, canadian, brit, french, australian, blah blah blah, we all human beings! This whole website is about telecommunication, let's keep it at that. Now let's ALL stand together, while we ALL inpatiently for the past 7 months been waiting on Nokia to release their stupid flagship already!!! lol.

Peace!

I've had my N97 for about two weeks now and it was just this past weekend, at a friends party, that I finally got people asking what kind of phone I was using. Some thought it was the LG Xenon, but I had to surprise them it was the new Nokia N97. I showed it off a little and got some wows from it.

Some comments I got were how they liked the touch screen display (the homescreen widgets) and how it wasn't so iPhone-ish. The sliding keyboard was also looked at and a couple mentioned how cramped it looked and why the space bar key was on the right side of the pad. After letting them try it out a bit, they actually got used to it fairly quickly. Some liked the multi-tasking capabilities it has and some apps I have on it (Nokia Messaging, Facebook, Gravity, Google Maps, etc.). I also showed off the music player, internet browser, and the camera too.

Overall, seems like I got some positive comments from friends and strangers. :D

Just thought I share this.

I have them both and aside from the bigger screen the n85 is better than the 5800, better gaming, better video recording, better camera, much more apps right now, the n97 will bring the best of the big screen and a good camera plus aqwerty, and the n86 should also be very nice.

This video highlights EVERYTHING about what I've been saying about hardware! Sure hardware performance is important but if it cannot last a full day enjoying ALL the features for more than 1.5hrs ... or cannot last more than 1day on standby (Omnia HD) then its not worth it ... just a Diablo on a normal metropolis city road standing still or hampered by curbs, too many traffic lights and even on the freeway/highway you're worrying about it lasting on a full tank. I see this N97 as the new Audi R8 V12 in the making ... performance but real world survivability! Winter or summer.

I have a feeling though that the long wait for production to begin en masse and shipment was due to the recent hardware deals with Qualcomm, Broadcomm, and T.I. to allow for a nice multicore cpu already in their parts bin for cheap pricing with promise to purchase higher end cpu's down the road.

I had it sitting in front of me for 2 hours before I even turned it out. Play with the slider for a while. Then power it up and marvel at the screen. After that, transfer your contacts, text messages, and anything else u need from your current phone, get your favorite apps installed, update Ovi Store, leave your widgets for last (especially if you're gonna use the Shortcut widgets, you need your favorite apps installed before you can make shortcuts to them)

WTF!? Seriously? Nokia always finds a way to screw something up. Its present in E71/E75/E66, why not the ONLY Qwerty N series?

The 5800XM represents an excellent value proposition that the N97 doesn't offer.

I thought his arguments were clear and valid, and this is the first of his reviews that I've watched. I actually wasn't too discouraged by his statements; he didn't seem like he was bashing the phone at all so I fail to see why you guys are turning away from the video review alone when it's nothing we don't already know.

if the apps for BB (especially Facebook) were better, the Bold might just be my only phone, however the iPhone seems to keep me more entertained while the Bold takes care of my business.

I'm really hopeful for the N97 though. I pray it is nothing like the 5800!

AutoText - Great innovation from RIM indeed. However, if Nuance Communications Inc gets their arse in gear, or if Zi Corp. has anything to say about it with upcoming 2 applications S60 just might have something to compete with AutoText down the road - I'm hoping. Zi Corp. has 2 upcoming applications and they sell their technology mostly to SE & Nokia and control 30% of the predictive text market.

Palm Pre bests the iPhone but its still lacking from possible powerful applications from what I've read by longstanding company's that code for Palm OS. Many are hoping for C+ code base; HTML+CSS+Javascript tells me its a web based application and although fast & easy to code for the lack of power - especially with lack of Flash Lite support (nothing clearly documented from Palm YET on WebOS supporting this) its still just Widgets + a db engine. DataBase (db) is nothing new to Palm OS coders but will this engine be natively accessible to them, I'm unsure. Palm Pre will have nothing against the S60 world in its first 4mths of life; you can thank Palm + Sprint for that. Palm Pre or like WebOS device when it debuts on GSM will have a lot of users IF the applications flourish in availability at release if not any potential market will dry up in 3mths if it takes that long.

Oh yes and the lack of Palm OS application support really hurts them. The base OS "LOOKS" great and is very fast, but will the speed be affected with a whole years worth of scheduled appointments, memo's, ToDo's, photos, videos ??

WHAT?! Sorry but I think the GUI has gotten you a lil' too excited there. Stating it'll kick *** is prematurely when nobody in the real world has fully used this OS on a full scale use of its core abilities. Its use of GoogleMaps for data still concerns me of its success in the worldwide GSM ecosystem, especially in markets like India (whom is just getting 3G in the next few weeks and pricing traditionally is too high for data consumption devices for MOST of the population) & China. Also consider how the Pre supports various languages; nothing highlighted at teh press release or videos as of yet. Common Gwapz your forgetting the small things that have made S60 so predominant in the worldwide smartphone scale. Sure there are challenges but on worldwide scale RIM is currently best suited due to language support, iPhone coming second. Personally I'd love to see the Pre & WebOS nullify iPhone's Mac OS X mobile version to the days of Newton.

Now we're talking! Back up to speed! Yes Symbian Foundation OS is what we ALL are DYING to see.
