*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

Thanks for the reply....well if that's the definition, than I guess by that definition the Iphone is not.

I was an avid Nokia s60 user and I've switched over to the Iphone because it is best for me. I know most people on this thread are N97 fans, but one can't deny the fact that the Iphone's touch screen and App store have revolutionized the mobile industry. Every other company from RIM, Nokia, Palm, etc have developed a touch screen phone that tries to mimic the Iphone and now everyone of those companies are trying to come out with an App store of their own. So IMO when companies are following and not leading, that means Apple have created a product that people want and the Iphone whether a smartphone or not has convinced a lot of user including myself, to switch.

So much for maps?: "The bundled Nokia Maps is still a poor man's Google Maps, and looks set to stay that way on the Nokia N97 as the spinning globe idea just doesn't work on a phone with this kind of power. It couldn't find Oxford St despite us typing it in three different ways, and from that moment we converted to Google Maps, which downloaded and installed quickly and also made good use of the on board GPS."

This is the form factor I've been waiting for from Nokia. Touchscreen + slide-out QWERTY. The D-pad looks like we can properly play ROMs.

I know some feel a little bummed and jealous now that their current phone looks obsolete after this announcement. The omission of Xenon made me feel a little better about keeping my N82 much longer. I think the true successor of the N82 isn't out yet. I expect they didn't put Xenon for the N97 so they can bring it down to 15mm thick instead of the 17mm from the N82 or 19mm from the SE C905.

I like the design. Hope the materials are durable and doesn't feel cheap. Hope the screen is scratch resistant as well. Looks promising. I still prefer buying this phone subsidized. It's starting to feel like a waste of time and money to buy it unlocked. You pay for data plans either way.

I knew 2009 will be much better year for phones than the rehashes I saw most of the time from 2008. Nokia came out swinging. The next gen OSes are coming too. I can't wait for Mobile Congress.

Let's be honest, If I just quoted everyone I wanted to reply to in a single post instead of individually, I'd only have like 340 posts in this thread. And if you subtract all the posts where all I said was "Is it June yet?" You're looking at like 12 posts LOL

Anybody has any familiar history with the NYC Nokia Store? Would they have a large quantity of units, or would they sold out the day it get released? Might just go pick it up myself...

I met with Chase Arlington on the S60 User meeting in NYC yesterday.

To answer the question on the display, it's not glass on the prototype I played with last night.

Still, the display is probably the best I seen so far, very bright and vivid colors.

Some info. Chase said:

* There will be 3 more build before the final product.

(today is April 24th by the way - Nokia is really waiting til the last moment to put the phone on production)

* The white and black N97 will be release at the same time.

My own observations. The last time I had the phone I tried to play a clip of "Monster Inc." and the video was freezing very often, this time the video runs perfectly.

The latest update to the phones software was update on April 20th, 2009. I found out using the *#0000# command.

To confirm the phone is a proto and not production unit; I checked the serial number using *#06#... (the serial number of the phone began with a "0" which confirms it's a proto; production phone have serial number beginning with "3").

Specs from the device:
Software version: V10.0.102.1
Software version date: 20-04-09
Custom version: 10.0.002.1.001.01
Custom version date: 20.04.09
Language set: 01
Model: N97
Type: RM-505

You don't need to jailbreak to add ringtones, you just need to rename the mp3 file.

Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't there problems with nokia's bluetooth implementation too, such as the fact that it doesnt sync properly with some cars?

Why are they always playing the Beegees? I'm gonna be super pissed when my phone comes with Beegees songs preloaded. Oh well, it will be much better than the Moby songs that were preloaded on my N95 that refused to be removed from the phone for the first couple months I had it.

I love that they use Gravity so much on this phone for their demos. I wonder how long until Nokia (or someone) just buys them out.
