*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

The green button will send the message at any time, assuming you have a recipient. I haven't tested whether it will send a blank message, but if you hit the green button and don't have a recipient, it dumps you to your address book.

Regarding the text entry area, I don't think this will happen with the N97 in landscape. I've seen in the videos that typing on the QWERTY keyboard inputs directly into the normal text area just like non-touch phones.

It's ok, you can see me unboxing my either white or black N97 on Youtube sometime in July ;) lol

(Not to mention anything specific at all in this threat... but there's a 45-min long Pre walkthrough as well from the same guy... Hmmm, something interresting to do at work, hehe. Now I can see why all these people are hyping up to Palm again, pss... no compass, only 8gb storage, 3mp camera, mono speaker... so 2007)

UXI:

Again if indeed the memory isn't enough for 10 or 15 widgets then what about active standby + 5 widgets? Is this the 4th time I am repeating this?

It is entirely possible that supporting 10 live widgets is memory intensive but there are surely limitations imposed by the SDK. I don't have that answer but they are meant to be light. Any Widgets currently off screen don't need to be drawn until that screen is in view. Besides the real extent of what comes through in those widget is really a line or two of text at a time. There is nothing extraordinary about what they actually do, but can be made very powerful by focusing in on people's interests. The whole design from the start has to have been lightweight and not resource intensive (for reference Widsets runs in java on dumbphones). But granted each active widget likely needs its own memory of about an MB or 2 maximum. These widgets are not rendering 3D graphics or anything.

The only thing new the N97 really has on the 5800 are the widgets (and let's not forget: Kinetic scrolling :D ). If you follow Nokia, you would know that this is what was meant to differentiate the N-series S60v5 product from the 5800XM. You could nearly buy 3 5800s for the price of an N97.

Without the widgets, the N97 would be a 5800XM that suffered from feature creep and costs 2.5 times as much for the benefit.

UAE consumers got it first, middle east and Europe always get the phones first. I had ordered N71 and N95 from UAE, Can anyone tell me that their is NO light leak in final version that's now available in UAE. I hope the previewed video in this link is not the retail verion!

Edit: link below shows no light leak as it is retail version :)

@finaldecision

Without meaning to be rude or insulting this is spoken like a true S60 newbie

"It will get slower with use? LOL Why install ram sucking apps? It will not get slower if you know 'how to' use it. Most people who will buy n97 wouldn't even know abc of it's hardware/cpu, heck most people don't even know what cpu stands for, they will see performance"

Well how about because the main feature and what's meant to set the N97 apart from other devices is the apps and especially WRT Widgets constantly running and updating or do you think these aren't going to use any Ram? Maybe you are suggesting don't install any that are going to use lots of Ram which are usually the most useful and interactive which is why they use Ram in the first place?

As for it will not get slower if you know how to use it, do you have any thoughts on what that actually means or entails? i know it sounds good and logical but just how do you achieve this then?

I would suggest the first thing to do would be install a good Task Manager something experienced S60 users always do first. As unless you can do some efficient house keeping and close and kill running apps your devcie will crawl within weeks never mind months.

Anyway enough of all this talking to brick walls now lets just wait and see what experienced and inexperienced users real life experiences are with the N97 and the Ram it has. Not long till people will start posting thier experiences and or problems.

That's the reason why I've stopped commenting altogether... man... no offense, but most you people ever do is complain complain complain, processor, widgets, lag, scrolls outside browser, a blank screen, blah blah blah, like nagging wives, at one point you just get fed up... But then again... there's nothing else to do until product is actually released and we all get to stfu while we experiment first hand with the phone.

The only thing I wish, is that Nokia would interract with its people... Like let us know wtf you are doing!! lol, what are you working on? Don't you wanna know our opinion? You claim to be creating a phone FOR us, yet, you can care less about what WE require...

Oh on a subsidy? Sure! But consider this; if they launched the N97 at $500 (as they should) the subsidized price could be what, as low as $250? Less? But if they release it at $600 or $700, then how low will it go with a new 2-year contract? $500 still? Maybe $400?

You N97 lovers will be in my prayers for a timely launch, but I've been around Nokia for enough launches that I know better.

Your long weekend was officially better than mine LOL. My favorite part of your mini-review was "the device itself feels amazing in the hand...perfect size...a bit heavy...however very enjoyable to play with..."

I love heavy phones. I was kinda disappointed that the N95 weighed less than the Motorola V635. I don't know about the rest of you but I love that weighty feeling to a phone

You're measuring the diagonals, not the actual area of the phone. I have a chart that I cooked up with the actual dimensions of each screen. When you figure out their area, the percentage is 10.4%.

Edit: I can give you the math on how I figured out the dimensions too, if you want it, but that's a lot of typing.

My PS3 just ate the YLOD a couple nights ago. :( Pondering whether to do the reflow/repair myself or just suck up the $150 and get it fixed. Ironically, my Xenon 360 is still running, though that's because I never turn it on anymore.

I need N97 to distract me.

At least the Lakers won, though. :D

I actually find the keyboard to be OK today. I don't type textbooks on these devices and find typing short text messages and html addresses to be ok - bearable before it gets annoying. I probably won't adapt to the new keyboard layout before switching to the next device, but don't find it confusing enough to make me spend 10-15 secs to find the right button.

But I am a disappointed on the direction pad. The d-pad is really what makes the N97 unique.

Ask yourself this, how many phones out there are touch and have qwerty keys?

There's probably a crap load of them.

But then ask again, how many touch devices have qwerty and a d-pad?

I can only think of the N97 (if you know others, please point me to it).

The d-pad should've made this a fun gaming device, but I find the d-pad to lack the much needed feedback. Played about 2-3 minutes of Spore on the device and am getting the feeling that if I have extended play with action/emulator games on it, I would be very frustrated.

Overall, still the best all rounder. And am still buying it. Just some feedback to help folks that intend to have heaving gaming on the N97.
