*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

Twice now you've put down a phone that was unsuccessful in North America but did very well for itself in other countries. Nobody would touch either here for the complete lack of NAM 3G, but where that 3G works, those phones did very well, both the TouchHD and the Innov8.

- 32 GB internal memory
- faster processor and apparentlty some other dedicated chips for picture/video processing
- bigger screen
- much better camera
- double led flash
- internal compass
- FM transmitter (not sure if 5800 has it too)
- much better build quality

May be forgetting a thing or two. Well worth the higher price IMHO.

Darn, no Xenon Flash? Guess I am sticking to my N82 until they release a phone with Xenon that beats it!!

Maybe they will change their minds and add Xenon? It would be a sale from me and a few others in here I saw!!

No need to bring in nationality. We are all humans and weird in some sort.Chill and talk about n97. So, whats going on with shipment? I called popular electronics today and they said they are getting it on Friday, but will be given to pre orders.

I can't believe you are comparing Palm's complete reinvention with Nokia's uhh what did they do again? Make the 5800? Make the N96? What was it that did recently to impress us?

Anyway, I wonder what you think the N97 has over the 5800. Anything we haven't seen in the N95?

Apple didn't come up with OS 3.0 in response to the N97 announcement. It was a clear response to the Pre and they've even admitted as much.

I'd like to be fair about it. If really Nokia showed a touch interface that goes beyond the same paradigm we've seen since the advent of touch devices I would say that Nokia is serious about innovating. Not an iota of intelligence in the interface at all. I'll bet you the Palm responds using some intelligent algorithm. The Nokia/WinMo/Old Palm/everything else touch screens are a simple "is the user touching here or not" paradigm. One pixel to the left and too bad.

Palm has scrapped their old OS and completely showed us a new OS/platform. Brand spanking new. In comparison from Nokia we get:

Promises in the air (round#: I've lost count)

Haptics, tat-kastor, scalado, N-gage, open to all possibilities (if you drop off your IMEI on forum somewhere).

Palm has shown us their new search paradigm and you know what I might not like when I try it, but I admire it. It's better than the **** search app on S60. They've shown some news ways of interacting with data on a mobile device. Sure Nokia promised us Widgets. Have you seen the quality of widgets they've put on the new download app? Have we seen even one concrete video of what those will actually do and what scope under which they operate? They are better than the abomination that was Widsets. That's not saying much.

How come even though they've shown the device behind closed doors they keep everything a secret still? How come I really don't much enthusiasm from those who have witnessed the newer demos of the device. It will underwhelm like every Nokia before it. Then if we're lucky it may get FW updates that fix it like the N95 did and it may actually realize the potential it was developed for. So over the next year your device will be in public beta. If Nokia feels generous it may leave public beta next year at that point the device that has the fixed widgets platform will debut at $400.

Okay if they do in fact make this widget thing cool and actually succeed in doing something innovative for a change, is that one thing worth an extra $450 (well that and the keyboard)?

Hmmm... what if i wasn't joking...? lol. Actually, I was really making reference to all the stupid little young girls who think its hype to own an iPod, who thinks it's the COOLEST, GREATEST device ever, but they wouldn't be able to explain to you why. Then I laugh, when I see them carrying their iPod, a camera, and their cellphone, tsk tsk tsk. iPods "might" have been revolutionary devices YEARS ago, but now, I find the technology in it outdated. Any device that only plays musis/videos is considered outdated for me. I would pick my SE K850i over an iPod any freaking day. I have 16gb on my phone, a nice 5mp with XENON, a data plan, all in one little device, and of course with wireless bluetooth headphones streaming music to my ears, beat that iPod. Like I said, brainwashed... just because everybody has one, doesn't mean you should have one too. Make your research.

Not everyone thinks the keyboard is crap. I think it is apparent that we all like different things. Check out "I got my N97" thread currently on the front page of this forum.

i agree the resistive touch has something to do with it i hate the touch screen for the 5800 u cant freakin type with it i dont care what anyone says unless u have nails! it just seems like its the same screen with a keyboard on it so u can acculy type with it which seems very sad. i hope its not true but it really does look like it :(
