*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

so it looks like the n97 also does not have letters on the dial pad. so if you want to call 1-800-FLOWERS you are screwed. there's no way to do this on the 5800 unless you memorize the letters. lets face it, if you're out on the go thats gonna be IMPOSSIBLE. i've noticiced on n97 videos that this is also missing. maybe they enabled the qwerty keyboard somehow, but this isnt the most elegant solution if you are using the n97 as a PHONE. and since they totally forgot it on the 5800, they may very well have totally forgotten it on the n97 as well.

sometimes i call my bank and i have to enter the month letters in question. last month i had to pay a speeding ticket from another state, and the ONLY way was using the phone system and they wanted everything entered with letters on your dial pad. everyone gets on my case about this, but all these examples are very valid.

i had trouble texting with my n82 at the beginning...i have big fingers...but still...got used to it and now its a breeze...
i played with the n97 a few weeks ago...no trouble typing...like everything else it takes to get used to of course....but the keys had a good feel about them...and the bedeviled space bar was surprisingly within reach... :hehehe:

c'mon dude, don't you know, you wanna be down, cool, hip, in, etc....you gotta be all up with, in no particular order: Organic, iTunes, Facebook, Prius, and American Idol. duh! ;)

1) You get what you pay for... It's really hard to find a nice quality multimedia, multipurpose phone for under 500$

2) Something else WILL get announced shorty enough... but it'll take yet another whole year for it to get release... And trust me, when that one will, another one will get announced... So it's up to you, you wanna keep waiting on forever? Or do you wanna take a risk, and stick to this phone now for at least a good year? :P

Here Here!! I couldn't agree more. I've never seen a big advantage to buying locked devices just for a wee bit of (in the short run) savings. If you look at the bigger picture as you have stated buying a locked down phone makes less and less sense. IMHO

Can't wait to see what happens when the new tablet comes out. We've seen some hints at what's to come in the Fremantle Alpha SDK and I like what we're seeing so far. Beta release to come in a couple months and hopefully some more hints at the hardware.

Holy ****, i just checked it out @ nokia chicago. The slider is damn nice. They didnt let me see the menu though. But damn, i cant wait for this thing to come out, it'll be the ultimate showoff :D but the thing sure does feel good in hand even if its slightly larger than other phones.

Though i have a question y'all, i made an agreement with some friends that black always look better (compare n95 with n95 8gb) but the white n97 looks better, what are your opinions?

I was going to do that today, since I removed my blackberry data plan yesterday. but since my bill cycle ends on june 24, I don't know if I should just wait until then to add it or not. My last bill was due today though so I'm not sure whether to add it or not. I don't want to have a crazy bill.

Eh, I don't know. Usually the official threads start to die out once everyone starts getting them.

If it's anything like the N95 phenomenon from two years ago, we should start to see tons of review threads and a specific thread for N97 owners pop up.

phones are not carbohydrates. are there tools to change the ui to your liking? i have the sdk software for my blackberry, anything similar out or coming?

Correct Garmin Mobile XT 5.00.50 seems to work properly with the N97.

Curious if Tomtom can be used using an external bluetooth GPS receiver.

Now anybody know how to set this up with T-Mobile T-Zones?

The n97 is still very very early pre production unit, so the touch will be fixed for final units. It waa already pretty impressive so i think final units will have a near perfect touch screen response time with zero lag and some nice smooth UI transitions. I have total faith that nokia "gets it" in this area, as they know how smooth iphone is. I have no doubts. And there'a a ton of time left until final release for developing and tweaks.

thx. also wondering if it'll damage anything if u let the battery drain out and have the phone shutdown that way.

cause i know it's a bit bad for laptops or computers to have the plug pulled out.. kinda same theory

I don't know about that. It's far late for them to change CPU specs. The freescale platform can be clocked to 528MHz so possible they could do that but I somehow doubt they will. OMAP 2420 is the most powerful overall but the Freescale CPU is clocked faster and is much more power efficient. They seem to be making the wholesale changes with the S60 UI more than anything and while the N95 announcement was an "uber" hardware announcement they changed gears here and decided to innovate on the software and UI front. It was a sorely needed area of improvement. The way they designed this phone the innovation is in what the user expects from and how he/she interacts with the device. This is far more useful and important IMHO than "half-baked" gizmos.

Am I saying I don't want 3430 in my next phone? No, but that will come regardless when the time is right, but if they have shown the ability to make a fast browser run at a clockspeed of 369Mhz more power to them. After all the iPhone runs its reasonably fast browser with something like 428MHz so it's not a great difference at the end of the day. Also I don't think the iPhone browser is blazing fast either, I think it just behaves differently in that it doesn't show you much of the rendering process. It just sits there and works in the background and then flashes the new page. S60 browser is annoying in that all the information you need shows up and you are able to start reading the info, but then it goes white for entirely too long to render the page design. Often times I wish I could just stop it from doing that so I read what I need to read and be done with it.

Certainly I think they will make a push on the hardware front in late 2009 to hopefully coincide with SE's offering but I feel that they are focusing more on their core beliefs in user interaction and function these days than simply giving us bigger numbers to brag with. You want 8MP get an Innov8, but see how that device is doing? Not so hot because truly we use S60 for more than things like cramming the most number photosites in the smallest image sensor.

The software on this device truly defines it.
