*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

My fear is that ever since I've used the E71, I'm scared that nothing will come close to be as efficient and easy to use as the E71; including the N97. One of my biggest fears, and this comes from owning the 5800 for a few days, is searching my contacts. It was a good 7, 8 step process to find and call somebody from my phonebook. With the E71, I just start typing the name of the contact. I've had the E71 3 different times, and I keep coming back to it because of how easy everything is, and I'm starting to think the N97 might be the same way. What do u guys think? I mean I've already pre-ordered it, so I'm getting it either way.

The other thing for me is garmin mobile, I use it almost everyday, and need it to work. Any word from garmin, or anybody else, as to whether it will work?
 
I have an iPhone and hoping to replace it with N97. I guess 'we'll see' how this device looks like though reviews until it actually get to our hands.

I don't understand why Nokia can't just use 240x320 for icons and dialpad then automatically switch to 360x640 for everything else.

I hope they are not jerking us around with this device like how they did with E75 (E65 with sliding keyboard and FP2). So this will be 5800 with built in memory, sliding keyboard and better camera (I hope).

As was explained a few times, you can't cancel your pre-order with NokiaUSA directly. You have to contact BrightPoint in order to cancel. This is what I did last night and they cancelled it without a problem. Do a search in this thread for BrightPoint and you'll get the number.
 
Dosen't really matter as i can stop the order/pre-order when ever i want. Even after it would be released and i don't come and get it in 2 week time, order just disappears with no costs to me. So why not? Have done it with so many other gadgets and what not in that site.
 
Did anyone else also notice that the techradar review was for a UK phone and not NAM? The NAM one could be a whole different ball game.
 
What are you talking about? I really doubt that's true. I really doubt the amount of tech-geeks or people interested in gadgets on myspace is greater than facebook, especially with its penetration of college students and other people around the world.
 
Realistically, there's only so much better hardware can do. Beyond improved video playback and gaming, I actually can't think of anything an end-user would need better hardware for unless they intended to transcode media on the phone itself or something. I can't think of much developers would use faster hardware for either, as functionally speaking most applications can be complete with a small memory footprint (no need for extra RAM) and low processor utilization (you'll never need full throttle, let alone a more powerful CPU). Bigger hardware means software might get onto the market a little quicker because developers will have more room to be lazy and not optimize their software.

I own a Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 with a 528MHz scalable Qualcomm processor, AMD Imageon 2700G, and 256MB of RAM. It's slow because the default Windows Mobile Shell and most optimizations of it just aren't optimized well, regardless of the beefiness of the hardware backing the software. SPB Software makes a brilliant Mobile Shell 3.0 that's properly optimized to be quick and speedy on all types of Windows Mobile devices, absolving the need for amazing hardware specifications. But then WinMo applications themselves are still prone to WinMo's junky memory management and are often slow to load up and run, without even considering how efficiently designed the programs themselves are.

I own a Lenovo ThinkPad X301. It has a puny 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo Ultra-Low Voltage (with integrated graphics and 2GB of RAM) that still manages to handle everything besides gaming and transcoding just as well as my 2.8GHz C2D, 8GB RAM, GTX280 machine can. This includes Photoshop, media playback, web browsing, and whatnot. Sure, it has inferior hardware but everything happens to work out just fine. I also hear netbooks are all the rage nowadays, and I wouldn't be surprised if people tended to lower specifications once they realize that there's no real use for hardcore hardware unless you're a die-hard gamer or are intensive with AutoCAD and file transcoding. I'm actually eying selling my X301 for a nice little netbook sometime in the near future.

S60 is old as dirt. It's a mature platform that has a ton of applications already, and how many innovative applications could possibly be dreamt up that would really benefit from beefier specs? I can only think of games and certain video players.

If the N97 happens to play video files well or admirably, I think it will cover not only what people will want it to do, but also what could even possibly be done (practically, of course) in the first place. The rest is just for niche markets -- people that really want a pocket Crysis or want to play their 1080p h264 files natively.
 
Welp, just canceled my amazon pre-order. Even if this phone was shipped tomorrow I dont care for it as much as the touch diamond 2 I played with yesterday. Way too many phones that do what I need with the apps that I want right now that the n97 cant.

The most I heard was Ricky hearing from a member of the development team that the NAM would be available a few weeks after the "global" version. The N97 may be launching "globally" at the same time in regards to the Euro, Asian, and Middle East Markets...but the red headed step children that are the NAM (850/1900 UMTS)versions are always released later. I believe the N78 was the only phone that had an almost same time availability...almost as the NAM was 1 or 2 weeks after. 2nd Place would be the E71 which had a three to four week availability...and those were a long 3 to 4 weeks for me.
 
What did you see gwapz? I have some good money in Nokia stocks, what you saw could help me decide if I should move my money to Samsung.

Any info is helpful! I am so disappointed with Nokia's announcement today (2/16) at WMC 2009. Was hoping they would release a remake of the N93 w real camera lens/optics like the Corolla leaked specs, but saw a N86 instead.

Man I'm almost in tears when I saw the N85 - seriously makes me want to rip my hair out and think WTF Nokia is thinking. Lucky I cut my hair short.

anyway....

i've noticed a few things about tapping on windows, icons, pictures, links, whatever. for some reason they all only have a certain "hit-box" as i like to call it. when you go back a page, you see overviews of each page. i find that if i click the page right in the center, more towards the bottom, then it will work. try to click it dead center, and it won't work. the hell?

other than that, the default text size is fine for me to read. though, i do enjoy the zooming on my friend's iphone that automatically reformats text. they should implement it for people who dont' have eagle eyes like myself.

i agree with the dropdown list of saved usernames. i always, ALWAYS have trouble selecting it, even with my fingernail.


and just a personal chime-in, the phone's screen resolution is no good. 16:9 is great for media purposes, but if you can't use QWERTY while in potrait mode, i say its a fail. i can use mini-qwerty when my thumb's nail is long enough, but that's just silly. they didn't even make the mini qwerty stretch to fit as much of the screen as possible. what is up with this? I wish the Pre would run on GSM. i'd go for that, too.

edit: err, not resolution, i mean physical screen size. it has to be wide enough for onehanded use of qwerty for those who want it, but i'm fast enough with T9. IF there was a good enough portrait mode onehanded qwerty though, i'd be really happy.

I hardly travel but when I do it's by plane. I don't travel back and forth to Montreal anymore because I don't work for RONA anymore so I don't do any travelling within Canada at all.
