*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

I know that the privacy screen is their intent but I question the usefulness of it.

As it stands you only get 5 widgets on the main homescreen. If you include e-mail, shortcuts and calendar, that only leaves 2 widgets. If you include weather (which I assume most people would), that leaves 1 widget of functionality compared to regular Active Standby on other Nokias.

In fact, using widgets to recreate Active Standby (shortcuts, email, calendar, etc) is actually less useful than active standby because the widgets take up so much room, you don't get access to as many shortcuts or multiple e-mail inboxes. Sure you can add a second shortcut box, or a second e-mail widget (actually can you ? It is not in the emulator, nor have I seen it in the "Add Content" popup in any of these videos) to replicate Active Standby but then you have one less widget space (i.e. no room for facebook, or bloomberg or ap news).

It would make MUCH more sense (IMO), to allow for two screens of widgets, that way I can have my core stuff on one page and the other stuff (FB, Twitter, whatever) on the second page.

If my boss is that interested in my phone (I mean really - how often is this going to be an issue) and I don't want him to see my facebook or OVI contacts, I just keep him on my "shorcuts/email/calendar/weather" screen.

I used to criticize Active Standby because you didn't really as many options as Windows Mobile and until Handy Shell there was little to NO third party support for plugins. However, this widget based homescreen with just space for 5 widgets is a step back in my eyes. I actually yearn for Active Standby.

Funny thing is the N97 doesn't even ship with a stylus of any sort. Wish it was capacitive, but i'm assuming they don't have the tech ready yet.

Wait...what's happening in LA? I live in Torrance, if Nokia throws a party I'm there, unless of course there is something I don't know. Details, please?

JonnyBruha I agree with you. N95 is still such a good buy then so many newer devices in terms of compatibility and 'smartness' of it. I want a better version of N95 then a 2009 device full of bugs and unstable OS.I wish cell phones had better return policies, you buy it and if it's something that does not stand up to your expectations then should be returned for full refund. I returned N96 with in 12 hours and I lost 10%, restocking fee.

I found it hilarious that you would even slightly believe a rumor that the new iphone contained 512 mb ram.
Apple doesn't need to do sh*T for people in the US to love their phone and consider it as the best there is no matter what. I am even surprised that they bumped it to 256MB, but that means that the phone would have been really laggy with 128MB....
Consider this, the N97 has 128MB and can multitask...iphone 3GS has 256MB and can't really multitask...

I'm not being an %$# to anyone who doesn't love the n97 or mentions any other phone in this thread??
Have I been an %$# to Johnny when he criticized the keyboard??NO..and you know why? Because he's been giving constructive criticism...He's not bashing the N97 without using it or without making valid arguments or just constantly repeating himself over and over again....
I've been following this thread for more than 200pages and I'm just sick and tired of reading the same people coming here and saying the same stupid things over and over again....

This sums ups my feelings:

This isn't an iPhone thread...hardware wise the N97 eats the iPhone for lunch except for the processor and the RAM ( and despite having more RAM, the iPhone can't multitask....soooo really it's just the processor for me)....

To me, leading edge means every specs of the phone pushes it to the limit...offering you the most powerful device you could get...the device should be almost flawless hardware wise to be considered leading edge...a device you wouldn't mind dropping $1K+ on because you know you are being offered the best that is available....but that's just me

nokia can afford to put in a meagre dual led flash because the demand will be so high irregardless, leaving room for an n98 update and stated by rapidstar

my main query is, are we finally seeing a merge of e and n series devices? what will the future e90 really be? surely not more specifications that can top the n97

2000+ posts to hype up...1 to brutally kill it all...hmm...oh well...now i am absolutely lost on whether i want to get this one cuz obviously whatever price tag that the n97 will carry will not justify the performance that it will put out...especially with a bunch of apps installed...
n86?...wait till the winter?? thankfully i still love and cherish my n82...

Seriously. I could take 3 widgets in the space of one. What do I need about weather?

One number, that's it. If I need more I'll click on it or better yet maybe something that would pop up a little data screen and disappear.

What about all that space on top?

Why does the profile need to be so big? The 5800's top right corner is far better.

Agreed, and since I needed multitasking, and proper email support, I've ditched the 3GS and the N97.

Both the phones fail on that front.

I start with 55 on boot but at that moment, I was at 12.8MB. Right now, it's 21.4MB and I'm running Accuweather, Facebook, AP News, Email Widget, Nokia Messaging, Music Player and Web. Hmmm....maybe there's a reason it's at 21.4MB

Give them a few years, after they've bought countless rehashes of the same phone, they'll be bitter. After they don't get support because the phone they bought isn't popular, they'll be bitter.

It's like the cycle of life... Nature and Nokia are weird things.
