*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

Because it's NokiaUSA.com

Nokia.ca won't start selling the N97 unless a Canadian carrier picks it up. The only devices they sell that no Canadian carrier offers are the N800 and the N810.

Oh ok thats great then, from what i have heard the canadians seemed bummed about not having the 850, but if thats the case then its great. :buddies:

lol i did something similar :P
i copyed all my songs from media monkey in mass storage then put my phone into media transfer mode and then i right clicked on each playlist and clicked sent to n97 but i noticed some songs didn't appear in my playlists and it takes a really long time but at least i got it to wor k :D

We dont care about the iphone in this thread neither for people that buy the same phone twice just because Apple can find the perfect victims. Go to the apple thread to gloat about the dumb phone.

Putting stuff on a memory card is not big deal. Space is one thing. You can fill 64GB with songs and the phone will be fine. If you however fill even 20 MB with SMS messages or have more than 1000-2000 E-mails on a current S60 it will kill the phone. People claim to have a lot of messages on their S60 but for me the phone goes to crap every time I have too many SMS or e-mail on it. That is the real issue, not 64GB or 5TB. It is the kind of data and how hard it is to index and retrieve that data. If you have 64 1GB movie files on it then big deal, that's only 64 items for the indexing software to contend with.

The real answer is all data being stored in a database file system as Windows has been promising for nearly a decade and Symbian has been talking about for 4 years now.

Ok, now that I've had mine an hour or so, some initial impressions:

1) size: smaller than I was expecting. Compared to buddy's iPhone 3G and the screen doesn't appear noticibly taller but the iPhone screen is noticibly wider. Nice heft to the phone, but not too heavy. Makes it feel nice and solid.

2) build quality: top notch. No creeks, squeaks, or anything other than rock solid, despite some attempts to induce some. Definite kudos

3) touchscreen: VERY responsive. Using my fingertips, I had no problems at all navigating the preferences menus (already scrolled through just about everything).

4) keyboard: not as bad as I was fearing from certain individuals' reports. There is a difference in tactile response from the top row versus the bottom row, but I get solid clicks out of just about every key as well as the haptic vibration and audible beep.

5) Phone usage: Called a couple people and hear them nice and loud. Sent two SMS and one picture message so far and was easy as pie. Going to love this.

6) Camera: took a couple quick stots of a friend and my daughter. Easy as pie. Able to do the half press/focus quite easily on my first attempt. Did a really short video, as well accidently. :embaresse

Haven't done more than novelty web browsing, etc but so far it's a blast.

More as I experience it.

You're not missing anything new (besides a few quick shots of Ovi Store) but it's a very nicely done video interviewing the designers, product managers, marketing managers about the phone and what inspired its design and whatnot. The production values are very high.

Here's something I was pondering when I was looking at the pics that Eric took for his blog. Don't the light leaks under the Send and End keys look like they could be intentional? Not that they were planned but Nokia realized they would have a light leak problem so they stylized it a bit?

FWIW sound quality on the 5800 is excellent. It has replaced my iPod since I've had it. Apparently the N97's sound quality will be even better, and will have enough storage (especially when 32gb microSD hits retail) for me to store ALL my music on it with room to spare. Coupled with my BH-503 it will be unstoppable!

Keep the pre-order with nokia, play with it a few days and refund it before the time limit it's up.

It'll fill the gap as you wait for the amazon one. Play with both and keep the amazon order. Do read the Nokia return terms/policy carefully thou to find out how you can get the full refund.

I actually quoted his full post. And to keep it in context the lack of a more powerful processor does seem to indeed hinder the device. Not to mention the lack of ram. but hey the screen and build quality seems top notch right, I would expect nokia to introduce a n97-2/n97-4 six to eight months after the initial release of the n97 to rectify these (spin) "minor" (spin) issues

Anybody else remember when nobody cared what CPU a phone had in it because it was a phone? As long as I can make and receive calls and send and receive text messages, the N97 is my next phone. And for those of you who ask why I don't just buy a dumbphone, it's because dumbphones aren't fashionable. ;)

It will make the whole screen go black as it notifies you, so you can click on the notification and read your message. Otherwise double press the menu key and hit the top right hand corner which has an indicator for all your messages.

That feature is actually a very nice thing about S60v5. It is one of the 3 or 4 things it has improved on S60v3.

Let us know what you think of the 5800.

I posted this in the NAM thread... I spoke to a lady at brightpoint today afternoon. My pre-order status is still back ordered. However she was told by Nokia that the phones will be shipped to them in the "next few days". I will be happy if I get it by friday ;)
