That's the terrible part of this equation. They blocked the Slingplayer app because AT&T said no. The last thing I want is some carrier determining which apps and services I can use. So does the whole world now get denied the app because one carrier in one country says the device can't have it?
I like Trent Reznor's stance in saying that he will just make the app the jailbreak community, but almost no chance that Slingmedia will do something like that.
On the main issue. Apple got away with it by the strength of their product. I mean they even managed to get a revenue sharing deal. It may not be fair, but Nokia simply has to make a groundbreaking product and even then they might not have quite the negotiating power of Apple.
But the product must have universal appeal or else no carrier will really want it leave alone be "indebted" to even offer it and not the other way around.
It's really not possible I don't think at least for 5 years or so. The only chance they have is to try with T-mobile that might see a deal as mutually beneficial since they only have one 3G smartphone on their band. AT&T couldn't care less to offer the N97 and if they did they would gimp it to the fullest extent.
But I suppose the world's largest cellphone manufacturer wants no piece of the AWS smartphone market or a piece of the US market. At this rate we will get one S60 every 2 years with a just all out gimped OS on AT&T.
