*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

That's the terrible part of this equation. They blocked the Slingplayer app because AT&T said no. The last thing I want is some carrier determining which apps and services I can use. So does the whole world now get denied the app because one carrier in one country says the device can't have it?

I like Trent Reznor's stance in saying that he will just make the app the jailbreak community, but almost no chance that Slingmedia will do something like that.

On the main issue. Apple got away with it by the strength of their product. I mean they even managed to get a revenue sharing deal. It may not be fair, but Nokia simply has to make a groundbreaking product and even then they might not have quite the negotiating power of Apple.

But the product must have universal appeal or else no carrier will really want it leave alone be "indebted" to even offer it and not the other way around.

It's really not possible I don't think at least for 5 years or so. The only chance they have is to try with T-mobile that might see a deal as mutually beneficial since they only have one 3G smartphone on their band. AT&T couldn't care less to offer the N97 and if they did they would gimp it to the fullest extent.

But I suppose the world's largest cellphone manufacturer wants no piece of the AWS smartphone market or a piece of the US market. At this rate we will get one S60 every 2 years with a just all out gimped OS on AT&T.

Depends on if the performance of the N97 is really broken like it was on the first N95. If the performance is mostly adequate I don't see Nokia spending the time to develop a newer version with increased RAM. Time will tell.

But you don't get all 7 items at the same time and depending on if you have the music player running it will push other content off the screen to make room. With the widgets at least it's consistent data shown to you on the home screen.

As to the privacy screen, perhaps it doesn't need to be marketed as a privacy screen. Currently there is an option for active standby on and off. There is a group of users that like to have AS disabled to show off their wall papers. Think of it as an easy way to enable/disable AS. Sure it can be used for privacy but that's not the only reason.

Multiple widget screens use more resources though they might not update all the time. Processor and memory resources need to be allocated to the full page of widgets. iPhone gives you NOTHING on the home screen. Just a numerical indicator if you get an SMS or email. If you want weather, a look at upcoming appointments, a summary of that incoming email, what song is playing, etc. you actually have to go into the app to get any of that information. At least Nokia provides some information on the face of the phone when you pull it out of your pocket. All this *****ing about Nokia's implementation of informational widgets on the home screen is ironic when iPhone gives you nothing. On top of that there's no multitasking at all. Apple couldn't begin to deliver something like a widget enabled home screen because it would require more than one app to run at the same time. With it's superior processor to anything Nokia offers I find it to be utter crap that anyone who multitasks at all complains about Nokia's offerings compared to iPhone when apps shut down if they get minimized. Oh, except for the iPod portion. At least I can listen to music while I'm trying to get some work done.

To be fair I haven't seen the 3.0 software from iPhone but I can't believe it's a huge departure from 2.0. Sure we get some great content searches, finally get MMS (two years later) but, really, the whole point of the phone becoming a mobile computer is moot on iPhone if you're going to require me to tie it to my computer for activation and syncing via iTunes. With Apple developing the iPhone from scratch they were able to start with a clean slate and develop a touch UI from scratch. I be there were a ton of brainstorming sessions to think through the touch UI and its implementation. Kudos to what they brought out. But seriously? For all this clean slate stuff they left off MMS for two years? Multitasking? A2DP in a music centric device?

Enough of the iPhone rant. The N97 surely leaves a little to be desired. While the widgets are nice the home screen makes poor use of space but there seems to be a trade-off between the amount of information you can show and real estate, the development time to make the widgets fixed in size versus adjustable. The widget home screen on the N8x0 tablets were somewhat standard sized but some you could make larger to truly customize your home screen. But some widgets just weren't useful in the default size and needed to be larger (RSS feed reader for one) and this limited the amount of data you could show. I guess I'd like to see the content of the home screen be more dynamic on the N97 but I'm sure there were reasons for doing it the way they did.

You probably don't play a lot of video games. I can't think of one video game console that DOESN'T have the directional pad on the left.

More stuff going on in the background. From what we've seen so far, at the very least, the widget home screen is eating up more resources, but there very well could be other things.

Regarding the past few bits of conversation, I sincerely hope Nokia is taking their time with this device. I was pissed as it is that it's coming out so late (I thought we'd see it in April), but what will be more frustrating is if they rushed the firmware to get it out the door. I've seen too many devices suffer the same problem only for them to be updated with proper, stable firmware as long as three months later. It would be nice to see a winner right out of the gate for a change.

I wasn't implying that the w300i was the best of the bunch. It's just the only SE phone that I used for more than a couple hours before selling. I think I had it for 2 months or so before I got the E62. The keypad was terrible

One thing that always irked me about Nokia and these flagship phones and even non flagship (E71) is that they NEVER have a nice case ready at launch. I still dont see anything for the E71 on Nokias site. I hate that. I want a nice case that I can wear on my belt for such an expensive phone like the N97.
