That's true. But I've compared handsets in the same situations on the same carrier and especially as far as canceling background noise goes, for your caller, they very wildly. I have an old Ericsson T28 (my first cell phone) that still beats every N series phone I've compared it against hands down. Handsets also vary wildly in terms of earpiece volume. Most cell phone manufactuers have just stopped trying.

I guess in actual practice I've just had a lot more problems stemming from the handset, than the carrier.

It's funny, because there is a lot of focus on noise cancellation now with the popularity of bluetooth headsets. But for some reason that technology is not carrying over to the handsets themselves.
 
I'm using the Jabra JX10 series II and I don't have any issues with the bluetooth. I used it on the E71 and didn't have those issues either. Nokia seems to be very finicky with certain manufacturer's. Maybe try a Jabra?
 
the only issue I have is in the closed slider position, the upper portion has about .5-1mm of play to the right side of the phone. It's a bit annoying, but I still think it's expected for a slider, unfortunately.

I don't have bad call quality, just find myself not putting my ear in the correct position to hear the best.

I don't have the tapping sound. The only creak i've noticed is from the battery cover, but that is very seldom.

I don't have any light leak from the bottom of the keyboard either.
 
I had the N85 (N86 functionally nearly identical) and now have the N97. It all depends what you want - a small slider or a slightly larger QWERTY keypad, touch phone. Those are the big differences - QWERTY keypad and touch interface.

BTW, after using a QWERTY keypad for messaging, browsing, and email, it would be hard to go back to an alphanumeric keypad with predictive text.
 
That's good to hear. If worse comes to worse I could use the WiFi that comes with the phone. I don't think you need a sim for that. Live across the street from coffee shop that offers free WiFi. :)
 
Those of you that just got the N86 NAM, what are your impressions regarding the shutter button for the camera? Any issues with it being difficult to get the autofocus set and then take the picture without undue motion? I think 1 or 2 people mentioned this earlier in the thread, and just wanted to get some more feedback on this.

I can see where it would be easy for most people to overlook the N86 despite it's spec sheet but it's still a decent device, IMO, and needs some notoriety. I think Nokia has a hand in the underwhelming reception of the N86 since they're HEAVILY promoting the N97. There are some of us who -- get this -- prefer plain old fashioned buttons over all-touch interfaces! Or maybe I'm just speaking for myself. :confused:

make sure your network settings are correct from the realplayer application...its stupid, I know...
 
A sugar cube to scrub off the physical branding and a ROM flash would solve that for ya. I'd wait for a new Android device anyways. One with a 1500mAH battery.

Unfortunately it's still just a tab in the contacts menu. When you get a new message it uses the default messaging app.

You have a choice of a popup or scrolling text when you hover over an entry.
 
I just looked at the pics and compared them to the n86 I just got from rogers and am happy to say that rogers is selling the newer version. Another thing that I noticed on mine is that the camera key is different from the unbranded unit I had bought from amazon a couple of months ago. If you have read this entire thread you will see that I was complaining about blurry pics when I first got this phone and I am finding it much easier to keep the camera still with the new Rogers version. Too bad the software is horrible out of the box with the rogers version, but that can easily be changed by changing the product code and then updating the software
