*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

Frankly I don't care for any of this speculation about larger sensors when as you put it they aren't leaving room for it in these designs. But ultimately the proof is in the pudding. Look at the sample shot. Does it look like it came from a bigger sensor? To me it doesn't. What's the point of speculating about whether they employed black magic or physics from the future the rest of society hasn't yet discovered when the sample shot is in front of us?

Totally agree that there is no way to fit the innards of a point and shoot into a phone. I've seen the inside of an Canon SD300 and it's quite an amazing sight. There isn't a cubic millimeter in there that hasn't been utilized.

The only reason I like Xenon so much is that it helps a camera be able to be utilized in situations that it otherwise could not be used in. The LEDs I've seen are good for night Macro shots and that's it. Try to take a group shot in a dim-*** restaurant and it will suck, you could however take a picture of your dish or of the forks and knives just fine.

It would just add capability for taking pictures in a commonly encountered social situation for many. Nobody is saying Xenon is the end all and be all of photography. It just increases the utility of a simple phone camera. The major advantage is that it is on one's person at all times and being useful in more situations makes it that much more useful.

If an effective LED solution can be developed then more power to them, but so far it does not exist.

Again, just another review where the conditions were modified to give the n86 an opportunity excel. I think everyone wanted to see real life shots of the n86 vs the n82. Not a picture of strawberries at 2ft taken in low light (with the flash off) What good does leaving the flash off do for the normal user. Most if not all users would have both cameras set to auto or at very least have the flash turn on!! Where is that picture comparison.

Also the picture of the snail ??? How far away was that picture taken from? 1 foot at max. Of course the dual led flash is going to produce enough light to capture a picture. How about moving back 5 or 6 feet and retaking the snail picture. Which camera do you think will produce better pictures then??

Here is a challenge to Nokia or anybody else with an N86. Send me one, I promise I will give it a no holds barred review, I will test it in real conditions. If it is better than my n82, then I will tell you the truth. If its not then I wont try "fix" the competition to show otherwise.

Also, dont take my rant as being completely negative against Nokia. After all I have owned the N82 since the beginning and also have the 5800. I am one person that was hoping that the N86 would be able to replace my n82, but unfortunately I dont think it will.

I remember seeing the proto photos of the n95 and saying wow im not changing my n73 for that it takes better pictures and wow i was wrong. :buddies:

The white makes the phone look less cheap, IMO. I also like how you can easily see the buttons and colors of the two sprinkle call/end buttons.

I still need to see this "3rd gen LED" :disappoin in action.

Ahhh, now we know why the N85 price dropped about $100 the past several days :hehehe:

What strikes me over my N85 is the one piece front with physical buttons for the soft keys, etc. I wonder how long it will take for that glued on bottom front on mine to fall off. Still, I'll keep the N85 for now. 8MP low quality pix aren't much better than 5MP, and as others say over and over, where's the xenon? The biggest drawback to all these camera phones I've found is trying to use them in sunlight - you can't see the darn display well enough to sight in the photo subject. Why is this not a problem on digital cameras?

If you really like the phone that much I'd give it another try just to see if your next one has a better antenna.

I do agree that maemo is actually more promising in terms of capability; while I do like android it's definitely more consumer oriented and will forever(?) be trapped by java. Still though, I'd take a htc hero with at&t 3G over an N97, but since that's probably never coming I'm looking at either the N86 or the N97 after 2.0 comes out.

The N86 still has yet to be compared to the Samsung i8510, the SE C905 and that LG phone with the 8MP cam(sorry but I don't pay attention to LG). I want to see that.

I wouldn't exactly say "patiently".
There really is no point in someone in North America buying an overseas phone that is going to have an american version. I know from experience there is problems with warranties because of it, and the loss of the 850 can be an inconvieniance.

I'm really get tired of checking engadget mobile, and howard forums multiple times a day.

My E71 warranty is up soon and it's needs the speaker replaced. So i'm hoping it hits the floor soon.

Nokia doesn't need to "learn from Apple", they need to learn from anyone who has ever sold anything.

If you want to sell a product, you have to make it available for sale!!

The slider felt like the INNOV8 slider.. Smooth and perfect spring assisted..

The keypad is similar to the ones on SE Walkman slider phones, but these ones are raised, very comfortable and have a very good tactile feedback.

The Dpad is also awesome and very comfortable to use (coming from an N79 soft key users)

Weight wise was a little heavier than the N85 but really feels solid in hand, and no creaks..

Downside: Freakin kickstand was loose.. lolz (I'm pretty sure they will fix it or either loose it)

Bad News: Its not coming out anytime soon.. I asked Summer? Nope.. Probably Fall or going to next Winter..

Nokia is screwing us again.. Arghhh!!! I hope he's wrong with the release date.. But then again the Proto we tested really needs a lot of work, it was at least 80% buggy.. Camera took at least 20 seconds to open..

no, the reason i'm not buying the N86 is not because of the incremental upgrades, but because it is marketed as a camera phone yet nokia did not place a xenon flash on this phone, making it useless after 6pm
