*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

N96 is long gone and the Black N85 is on it's way back to Amazon and the copper N85 I gave to my kid because she needed a phone and even though she is a grown adult I still have a soft spot for my girl so I now have no phone, just waiting for my N86 to drop, but I do not expect it until sometime next month!!!! Well it will teach me how to be patient or just give me joy in bugging Nokia everyday!!!! Maybe if I bug them enough they will tire of me and quit messing around and release the phone, but I doubt it!!!! :2thumbs: I am a person with way to much time on my hands, but that is what happens when you are disabled and cannot work any longer!!! :(

Oh and have you seen that the N96 is no longer on the Nokia USA web site, wonder if they finally decided to put it out of it's miserable existence????? :befuddled

Cell phone euthanasia!!!!! How Quaint!!! :2thumbs:

Makes sense.

I just returned mine for another faulty slider and a jammed 3 button...they were of course excellent during the return process of both of my phones.

In any case, I'm done with this phone. Build quality just isn't up to par for my tastes, and the camera produced blurry images 90% of the time (even when I had it on the timer leaning against a hard, secure surface). V20 came too late for me-

Im relatively new to the s60 OS. Is there any way to customize the homescreen of this phone? I want to replace the chat, calendar entries, and photo sharing options with some other apps. thanks in advance.

More MP count and no Xenon is pointless. I take shots no higher than 2MP. Sometimes less just for Facebook and MySpace. N82 is still the Nokian king of camphones. It seems to me that the best Symbian or camphone wont come from Nokia this year, but from Samsung or SE. Only the most dense fanboy will defend this phone and Nokia's constant rehashing.

geeezz.. Give it a break.. You guys are talking like its a production version he tried..

I guess these complains are good.. So they can improve on the production version..

Thanks for the help. I've already done exactly what you describe several times. Update with computer, then hard reset. I even tried doing hard resets both before and after updating the firmware.

The only difference I see is are you saying I should go back to v11 firmware and not use v20? Where do I get v11? When I run the software updater on my PC the only option it gives me is to reinstall v20.

I'm a little perplexed how so many people can be so insistent that the N86 won't measure up to the N82, just because it doesn't have a Xenon flash. Of course, the real proof will be in an actual comparison of photos once the N86 comes out. But still, for the time being:

The N86 has a better more light sensitive sensor (not just more pixels),
a mechanical shutter,
variable aperture settings,
and a more useful wider angle focal length.

Especially the mechanical shutter and the variable aperture settings are substantive steps in the direction of the functionality of a real camera. These things are big deals in terms of potential improved image quality.

So I just don't get why the Xenon flash is the sine qua non of what's the best phone-camera. In real cameras I don't even like flash. I consider the flash to be the hallmark of bad, ugly pictures and I almost never use it. So I really don't care that much whether a camera (phone or otherwise) has a better or worse flash, since it's just going to make for ugly pictures. I'm tired of hearing about the N82 and it's Xenon flash. It just is not the most important measure of what makes for a good camera.

Edit: Here's Rafe from All About Symbian, making the point that the variable aperture settings and the mechanical shutter are a big deal and something new in phone cameras:

Really?? Wow! Is it user friendly and well organized? The reason I'm asking is because I currently use a Bold and plan on getting the E72 when it comes out. So I want to know how great this email app is.

Anybody else have poor call quality when they use a BT handsfree? I have a Sennheiser VMX-100 (I think) and it worked fine with my N95, but when I make outgoing calls on the N86 people on the other end complain about nasty call quality.

This just me?

Don't be fooled, it will be the same old **** with a new name and few tweaks. Hasn't the past 3 years of S60 developments taught you anything? This "new" OS is managed by the same set of morons who can't fix a call log in 4 years. Maybe they will have some jazzy stuff, but even the hype words don't talk about a new modern PIM or even a PIM that would have been appropriate for last year.

Someone let me know when they come out with a new hype for a new PIM. What do you think it will be? Date and time on the e-mail -way or Company name together with the contact name -way.

There is a hype word for the contacts being integrated into the auto correct dictionary isn't there?

I am not saying don't be excited, but I am saying don't be too excited. There's always some new thing the fanboys latch onto. Last year it was S60v5. Now it is this Symbian squared or some crap.

Until I see some actual ****ING RESULTS, I won't really believe a damn thing.

Well it's been fun. After 2 years of lousy service I'm jumping to Verizon. Not crazy about it but they have the best service where I live. The ol' N86 will be up for sale. Hello Android I guess.

I upgraded to v20 OTA and can verify that my number key tones don't work, but I normally have those off (as should you!!) so that isn't a huge issue.

My GPS seems to be working well enough, although it took a good hour to get a fix the first time I tried it. Also it seems to usually be off by a few miles when showing my position (I assume this must be the nearest cellphone tower, or something?)

Just upgraded OTA. No issues. I got my key tones back! I'm glad to have this back.....entering a password was an issue numerically without the tones.

Absolutely.

...however, a NAM N82 never showed up in FCC filings, so anyone who was hoping for such a device was making guesses based on nothing. The N86 had proof behind it..whether it would be released or not is another story entirely. Further, I would believe an FCC filing long before any roadmap that is leaked; it's just that - - a roadmap...that doesn't mean anything on it is concrete.

So what you are saying is I shouldn't have a fact based opinion? What am I ruining for other people? If they want to buy this phone, they will buy it.

I was simply responding to your question of why more people are notmore excited about this phone. Its simple, there is nothing exciting about this phone. Put it on a table next to the N95, the N96, the N85 and it will look exactly the same. Then put it on a table next to the 5800 and the N97, the differences are obvious.

I guess you just didnt like the answer that you got. Sorry, you are right. The N86 is Awesome. Its the most ground breaking phone that has been released since the bag phone. I am on the phone right now preordering one from Nokia.

Maybe your the one having doubts.
