the v20 will be a huge firmware upgrade from all that i have read, not sure if it fixes the ram (i hope so) but it says it adds about 20-30mb to the c memory and the full kinetic scrolling will make the device a joy to scroll thru,
plus the support 5th edition is getting now seems like the smart thing to do, i myself am undecided but it seems all the newer programs and firmware upgrdes are related to the 5th edition touch screens. :buddies:

As such, surprising even myself, I?ll be picking up a Nokia N97, rather than a Nokia N86 8MP. It is, out of the box, an inferior product, in my opinion. However, with the upcoming 2.0 firmware, which I have seen in action, and the upcoming onslaught of application support, I think that the N97 will be an excellent device for the ongoing future. It?s too bad, the Nokia N86 8MP would have dominated the market 18-24 months ago.

Not trying to start another argument. Am I the only one that is concerned by the lack of a candy bar phone from Nokias new lineup. It looks like they have dropped the form factor and added the N97. Maybe they think the E series will suffice previous candy bar owners. I prefer a phone with as few moving parts as possible.
 
Get Handy Clock or a third party replacement. I really like Epocware's line of software. I use Handy Calendar, Clock and Taskman on daily basis, I also rely on it as an alarm and notifier. Has never let me down.
 
About what I would expect. You can see the side effects of poor software coding on the nokia. However the 12 MP sensor shows its hardware advantages and disadvantages largely based on the light. That N86 obviously had FW V11, However it still handles low light better and is less likely to blow out in high light or contrast situations, again thanks to the less dense sensor. One only needs to look at compact cameras two years ago to see the same battle played out. There is only so much space in these phone/camera chassis. The Megapixels will always go up because thats what the market dictates, but that does not make it a good thing. My 8 MP Casio consistently took better quality photos then my 12 MP Canon does now. Now if we step up the sensor size like in DSLR or micro four thirds, then by all means give me the megapixels. To me 8 MP is perfect for a compact camera and I hope Nokia improves on the 8 MP design instead of chasing a marketing dream like all these other manufactures. It was not more then a year or so ago that Nokia was the only phone manufacture putting a decent sensor(5 MP) in a phone and now all these other manufactures have gone from 1.3-2.0-3.2-5-8-10-12 megapixels in two years. Do you think thats because of imaging performance or marketing? The sensors have enough pixels now, lets work on the lenses(better quality/optical zoom) and flash.(whatever it takes to get good range and coverage with adequate power and little effect on color.)
 
I've had my N86 (black) for a few weeks now. I'm extremely satisfied with it. I feel it's a huge upgrade from an N97 I had before (I'm not a big fan of S60 5th and feel S60 3rd is more fluid to use).

Can't wait for the NAM firmware update to come, the one that Europe has had for a while already now.
 
i think the keypad backlight is controlled via ambient light sensor and screen brightness. May be you were on low battery so the phone was saving battery or the ambient light sensor was fooled .

Btw , are you talking about RAM Or internal memory ?
 
Anybody using a 16GB microsdhc card? I'm wondering if I should get something faster than a class 2? I'll be using it to record video, so I'm kind of worried that class 2 will be too slow. I've been reading around and I really haven't gotten a clear answer. Thoughts?
 
I am not sure if the price is an issue as they could put better speakers on 5800 which costs less than any of the latest N series. In my view Nokia is focusing just audio on XM series, Camera on N series & email/QWERTY on E series.
 
Oh lol, I guess that works. It's kind of a pain to use when typing because the dpad is elevated significantly above the keypad and my thumb often hits the bezel on the way up, but at least it's there.

47% WORLD marketshare is still quite dominant in my book or in any investors book when the nearest competition is at 21% world marketshare. Also Nokia still has the largest contracts with providers worldwide and previously having a failing business server software & hardware sold off at a profit, they still make money off of phone sales, software (they do license Navteq technologies & services), and also networks (3G HSDPA and soon LTE) to many providers. They are still VERY liquidible.

Getting a loan to ensure you're business keeps going is not a problem for Nokia really. the nearest competitor in world marketshare MUST sell hardware in order for their business software server & provider connections to their NOC to work (RIM) if devices beging to fail in sales and its consistent over the next few quarters - its not just RIM's NOC going to be very expensive for them to keep going, but also providers will also take a huge hurt where it counts.

Are you sure Nokia is not making that much? Maybe their sales and revenues for hardware have dropped - but their STILL making a considerable profit of over $3 Billion per quarter (or more the past 5 qtrs). Also note that revenue's and profits from Siemens-Nokia, and Navteq can always be shifted to the parent company. We'll see how Nokia does.
 
I just updated using NSS and it definitely feels snappier, The only program I needed to setup again was Roadsync and the one touch calling.
