*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

Did you resolve your GPS issues? I just got the N86 a couple days ago and did the OTA update to v20. After that GPS just wouldn't work at all (although I didn't even try it with v11 before I updated). Well, it will work for some reason only at my house (and only sometimes, in a very spotty way). I don't know if being on wlan helps. Do I have to have a data plan for GPS? I don't have a data plan.

In an effort to get GPS working, I reinstalled v20 from my PC with the Nokia Software Updater program and that did not solve my GPS problems at all. So right now GPS is basically useless for me.

What's more, after the second installion of v20 from my PC, the keypad tones stopped working when I dial a phone number (tones work for all other keys, just not the numeric keypad). I saw in the Nokia forums that the keypad tone problem seems to be a known bug. Anyway, so I feel like using the Software Updater program introduced more bugs than the OTA update method for me.

That said, any suggestions about how to get GPS to work or fix the keypad tone problem? Or am I just stuck waiting for the next firmware? Thanks.

All About Symbian has a side by side comparison of the specifications on the N85 and N86, with some commentary from the editors:

http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/features/item/The_Nokia_N85_and_N86_8MP_Side_by_Side.php

One of the editors, Steve Lichtenfield (who I believe was at the MWC conference where the phone was introduced), writes:

I'm as skeptical as anybody. But the point is, physically larger sensors (not more megapixels) give better low light performance. Maybe the N86 won't be the phone that makes this step forward, but it is perfectly within the realm of possibility with technology that already exists in point and shoot cameras. No need for a giant full frame sensor like in the best DSLRs. Anything would be a huge improvement over the tiny sensors currently in phones. This is not magic. This is not taking photos in the dark with no source of light at all. This is just reducing the situations in which a flash is necessary and therefore improving the overall image quality in all lighting conditions.

On a completely unrelated but interesting minor note, Rafe at All About Symbian notes that the soft keys on the N86 have haptic feedback.

SonyEricsson's K850 was a BAFOON of a phone and I hated waisting $299 and extending my contract for 3more years because of it! Its pictures SUCKED in comparison to my old W810i. And I have a few pictures taken with just about the same views in summer from both - 2yrs apart and I can tell you the quality from the W810 with 2MP is MUCH better than the K850i with flash. ONLY the video recording was any better. Heck the K810/790a was better than the K850i.

To my knowledge the N93 is the imaging flagship for Nokia S60, not the N95/96/N85/N86. I don't recall Nokia stating its the imaging flaghip but I could be wrong.

ok... so people...does the N86 have all of these meaningful features built in? I can't tell if some of you are being sarcastic, like this is a crappy camera phone, or indeed nokia hit the nail on the head with the important camera specs?

sorry for the ignorance!

I have hacked my N86 with PNHT method and its working like a charm. Finally the freedom :buddies: Someone even had success with RM485 variant , I think that's NAM .. interested guys can get their phone hacked with this new method... :)

no real issues. phone works well. if you are thinking of waiting for nokia to release a firmware with less bugs you will be waiting 18mths, and even then it wont be perfect
i am using internet radio app right now and it works fine with stations in its directory. what is the issue others are having? connects much faster than i remember my e71 or and version of n95 i have owned

Thanks for the reply. At least I can stop pulling my hair out over what the issue is. I tried a lot of other bluetooth headsets recently and they did not all have this sort of problem. So I guess the N86 is just finicky with the Voyager Pro for some reason. Unfortunately, none of the other headsets I tried had good enough sound quality for me.

By the way, with the firmware upgrade, is there a way to backup the N86 from within the phone first, or do I have to use PC Suite?

I definitely agree. I was actually using zoom also, it was about 25-50 percent most of the time. The N82 would blur immediately when zooming, you can see this in my earlier concert videos in the above link. v20 for NAM can't come soon enough!

It's worth noting that once you have updated to v21, you will have to reinstall the camera mute patch sis file (if you were using it), toggle warning tones on and off in the settings, and restart the phone completely to get the camera sounds muted again.

I had no intentions of ever getting the N97. I don't like the slide out qwerty keyboard because there's too much travel when I type on one of those phones. I had the TyTN II (yes, I know and please forgive me, lol) and I struggled typing on it. I have small hands.

I'm not happy with the N86 situation either. I don't know what the hold up could be.

Sphrog, if your dad needs any help, let me know. My dad is retired so he has lots of free time. (and my mom is always nagging him to travel more)
