*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

It's worth noting that if you use the Ovi or Horizontal Bar standby screen layouts, it gives you a quick link to your primary mailbox (configurable which one) and lists the last message receive, as well as how many other unread ones are in the box.

I agree it would be nice to have the option to get text message style popup alerts when a new email is received, but that might get kind of annoying if you have a busy email account, so I can understand why it might have been left out.

Amazon has them listed as "In Stock" now...still titled "International Version", but the description still lists it as having the 4 GSM bands and the 850/1900/2100 UTMS/HSDPA bands...

I don't see how you're getting those prices. When I log into Bing, it shows no cash back option for the Dell $419 deal. And the best cash back option it shows is 5.8%, so even if that were available with Dell that would only get it down to $395. (And that again assumes you're somewhere that Dell doesn't charge tax.)

Does this really make sense for a phone that has 8Gb of built in memory? Isn't the point that you might not even need to have a memory card? Are you really going to fill up 8Gb of memory with applications? My entire Linux operating system (i.e. / partitioin) with a bazillion applications only uses 4.5Gb on my laptop. It's not like were going to be installing Photoshop or Final Cut Pro on the N86.

I can understand being careful not to reach the limits on the internal memory, by overfilling it with photos or something. But not using it at all seems like it will just leave 7Gb of unused wasted memory. Am I missing something?

I don't miss the xenon at all. The dual led is good enough, but having light for video is the nice part. If I could have both, of course would take the xenon for pics, and led for video. But only one or the other, dual led for sure.

A video review of the N86, on All About Symbian:

(Starts at 1:27)

Steve lumps some pretty high praise on the camera, calling it "just about the best quality phone camera in the world." And he insists again that the more sensitive sensor and variable aperature really do make a difference. He also makes the argument again that the dual LED flash is pretty impressive.

I saw this as well. Seems they nailed the HW this time around (except for the processor, of course), but the SW for the camera is still lagging behind.

Too bad-

Have you seen what the keypad on the N85 looks like after a few months??? Well, even if the keys on the N86 do approach that amount of 'scarring' the keys will still be more comfortable than the 85's are.

As is said for 'other things", they're "chararacter marks"

Tried this, does not work. A quick search says that it has to have 101F8809.txt in the folder c:\private\10202be9, my n86 NAM does not have this. Are you using a NAM n86? I am coming off a N82, and it was super easy to do this. Any help? I have some weddings to go to soon and don't want to be the one drawing attention...

You're right, just checked my n82 and there is a my nokia app. But on the n82 you can open it and it will say "not available in your region". But on n86, it doesn't have the icon (just shows the puzzle piece), and clicking does nothing.

And music is just a folder now instead of a picture.

I don't have an N85, although I've handled it in stores. I can say though that when it comes to build quality, I don't think anyone will fault the N86. I've pressed all over the device and there are no creaks, the slider is SOLID, keypad is discrete and large enough for men's fingers, backlighting is even, the screen is brilliant... about the only niggle I have about the way the N86 was built is regarding the camera button. It isn't as easy to half-press as the N82's camera button was, although I think it's getting better as it gets less stiff the more I use it.

Oh wait! I just remembered there IS another thing I hate about the N86's build. The SIM card slot is horrible. I have to use tweezers when I remove the SIM card.
