As I understand it the patch just hides the shutter sound files, or replaces them with a silent one. It should work regardless of firmware. I wouldn't recommend installing firmware for a different region just to disable the shutter sound, since this much less intrusive workaround is available.
 
N97 will most likely be priced at $700.00+ upon release.

That's just too much coin IMO for a handset that has a 5MP camera, no Xenon, & a weak processor.
 
Not quite accurate wrt N97 and scratches. From the poll on the August support thread, less than half (almost a third really) of those with scratches reported a visible effect on their pics:

Scratched, major effect 13 11.30%
Scratched, no effect 34 29.57%

The remaining 60% reporting no scratches or effect, of course.



I think the form factor is doomed to disappear, unfortunately to many. Bigger touchscreens is the way of the future, though hopefully Nokia will be wise enough to not force users into a touch environment. I'd prefer N97 had another dpad in between physical call and end buttons on the front face, for example, and originally thought N86 was going to be a merger of N85 and N82, instead of just an another variation of N85.
 
Well, I just had my last phone call with this phone...the quality is just too awful, IMO, to continue using. Combined with my crooked d-pad and wobbly slider, returning this thing is a no brainer.

It's going back tomorrow.

Sorry Nokia...you just can't do it for me anymore.
 
Well even though I got that information from Nokia I am hoping that the person does not know what she was talking about because I just preordered it from Nokia USA with a discount code THETRUTH gave me and I got it for $477.84 shipped. Hope I do not end up regretting this!!!!!
 
I don't know what ROGERS purposely did to N86 but my unbranded N86 from amazon is the fastest n-series I've used. Built quality is superb. I opened the slider to see if there's any play....not even half a millimeter. Two things that bother me are the crappy stereo speakers(compared to N95), and that there's is no dedicated graphics chip(like in N95).
 
It's the only S60 phone I'm interested right now.....miss the good camera.


Thanks for the Vid...definitely gets me excited about the phone, especially the OLED screen, scratch resistant front...and oh yeah the camera :D
 
It does not seem as though many people are interested in the N86, there were way more people frothing at the bit for the N97 or even the 5800, seems like only a handful on here are even interested in this phone, what a shame!!! :disappoin I personally cannot wait for it to show up, would rather have this, than that over priced lame N97!!! :2thumbs:
 
got my n86 asian version ... a little dissapointed. the photos are dark. The n82 takes better photos than the n86. The autofocus can't ever seem to focus on the right object and facial recognition is awful!!!! hopefully a new firmware will fix this...

Anyways i guess its better than my e52 so that phone will be going off to ebay....
 
To those that asked, I find no difference in the RF of the E71 and N86. I've never had any RF issues with the E71. The N86 earpiece volume seems plenty loud, too.
 
freind at the s60 meet up in nyc is playing with a proto of the n86, he has a n82 but he dont have his email configured, he took 2 pics both with the n82 and the n86 and said on screen the n86 actually looks brighter in terms of the pic in a low lit area this is the xenon vs led so hopefully it really is, he said he will send them via mms so hopefully i can post them. :buddies:
 
This really isn't hard to figure out. Think about it. Think.

Put yourself in Nokia's shoes for a minute. On the one hand you've got carrier subsidized handsets (N97 and 5800) selling like hotcakes in Europe; and on the other hand you've got the N86 NAM, which will be going on sale, unsubsidized, in a country in which your market share is ****. Presumably Nokia's assembly labor force is fairly static at the moment.

Tell me, where would you focus your resources? I sure as **** would tell the North American market pretty much exactly what Nokia has told us: "We'll get around to it when we feel like it."
