*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

Now the Pixon12 vs N86. As its been said before one is a smartphone the other is not, one is a touch screen the other is a standard keypad, so they are pretty incomparable as a whole. Now they are both flagship imaging phones and sold that way, so you can compare that. Pixon12 is a 30 mm no name lens. N86 is 28 mm carl zeiss lens. Both have variable aperture lenses, though the N86 has one more F-stop at 3 above the pixon12's 2 F-stops. Pixon has xenon though a very narrow angle and short range, N86 LED flash is actually very wide angle and range though less powerful but works well in conjunction with the high sensitivity sensor. The flash with the Pixon12 causes hot spots, the N86 leds cast a bluish tint. Video wise the Pixon12 claims 720x480 ?HD? at 30 fps, N86 is VGA 640x480 at 30 FPS, I think its obvious that the Pixon12 is being overburdened, Nokia has spectacular video with a tremendous ability to track quick moving scenes or objects and now true digital zoom. Pixon has touch to focus as well as regular auto focus, N86 has regular auto focus(its not touch, what do you expect?); neither camera has manual settings, auto features vary. Pixon is 12 MP and in bright sun should almost always perform better then the N86 8MP, no reason to test the camera on any setting besides their native. 12 MP in such a small space is pushing it and it shows in less then ideal conditions. Nokia actually chose to put a compact camera sensor in their phone, which makes itself known in the phones thickness. The sensor in the N86 is far more sensitive then the pixon. This is quite obvious in low light photos as well as light bleed in bright light that the pixon suffers from. Right out the gate the Pixon12 is programed correctly both in terms of features and imaging algorithms, maybe because samsung also has a camera department. The N86 has better hardware, its most limiting feature is the software. If the N86 turns out anything like the original N95-1, which I think it will. The N86 will have spectacular imaging in just a few firmware updates. They have already improved it greatly from v11-v20 even adding face detection, v31 will be excellent trust me. ;) Now that it is only $369 on amazon hurry up and go buy them so nokia gets motivated to fix software. The mac situation really blows right now. :doh: On another note I now have tethering working flawlessly over both bluetooth and usb. :buddies:

Nah, I wouldn't worry about that. I'm sure it's either a bug or feature.

Nokia probably figured if you don't touch the phone in a few hours, shut the screen off since you are probably sleeping.

Upgrade to v20 and then check.
 
I've had the unbranded C905. It looks very good in the pics...and besides that and the scratch resistant glass screen the rest is crap(actually the camera is very good too). So many software issues....More than often up direction on d-pad didn't work. To dial number 3 on keypad I had to press really hard with my fingernails. Initially I thought that I had a bad unit but looking through forums I found that I wasn't alone. My advice, stay away from this phone.
 
Time can't go fast enough. I've already cleared it with the girlfriend, I'm getting the N86 as a weekender.

Unless E71 v300 comes to NAM, then I'll hold off for the price drop after a month or so.
 
yes java script on the n95 and the n86 disable it. :buddies:
the n95 is not as fast as the n86, but it will speed it up.
The iphone 3gs is fast no doubt though but just looks so much faster when nokia is loading flash is all. :buddies:
 
The n86 is close to perfect of the dual slide form factor. Why did it take nokia this long to finally get it right with solid materials? I would have bought it a year ago until the higher res screen phones came out. But now that they are i won't be going back to that low res screen.
 
So what your saying is that with the correct lens, I can take a picture without a flash, while sitting around a campfire at night, and it will come out like it was taken during the day???? Wow. That sounds great.
Just another person that has missed the point. There is no way to take a picture in a completely dark room without a proper flash. I dont care what your lens is. The only way to fix this problem is to add light to the moment. or use night vision. (wont my kids look great with that cool green glow in every picture) When you need to add light xenon has been shown to give better results then led.
I am not saying that a xenon flash should be used for every single picture that you take. or that xenon is necessary to take good pictures.

If xenon sucks so bad, why are they used on much more expensive cameras than our simple camera phone.

nokia changed the resistance of the top slider to be tougher to get to because of complaints that previous N-series dual slider users had. Many said that it slid open too easily and often would take the phone out of keylock in their pocket by accident.

TV cables are usually standard, similar to 3.5 audio jacks, they should be something like

left channel
-
right channel
-
Video channel
end of plug

Don't rush out and buy one just yet, I believe i have a 3.5mm TV-out from a camcorder that I'll test it on and let you know. Unless nokia went with a proprietary jack, any should work without a hitch.
 
Hmm...pictures don't look as bad as some of the others I've seen. When there is a lot of light, the pictures look absolutely amazing for a cam-phone.
 
I had put my name down on the list for the nokia store to call me, back when the n97 came about. They just called me a few minutes ago saying that they have the n86 in stock. I asked if it was the one with NAM 3g, and they said yes
