*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

that's a horrible comparison.....

3G is almost necessary to use some of the media streaming applications on the go...

don't even think of using a P2P client w/o 3G....

it's not like someone is going to be like "what is that you took a pic of, I can't make it out" 'cause you had an LED instead of a Xenon...

I don't know where the antenna is but its not as good as the N82, I have the N82 with a sim on the same Orange network, and the N82 was able to keep reception on the train much better than the N82. In another stationary location I had 4 bars of 3G on my N82 where as I only had 1 3G on my N86 same location.

Also my GPS is playing up I could not get a signal for ages and after half hour outside It eventually crept up to 4 on Googlemaps but kept dropping out. Using Ovi Maps guidance did work but it kept dropping out. Im not sure If the A-GPS is throwing it off. Will have to fiddle with it, hopefully it just needs some settings change.

It should not take eight seconds to capture an image. It should be fairly quick. I don?t ever recall seeing a processing message. Just curious have you tried the sequence mode I described in my last post to see how long the process time is with that? Is your phone?s internal name RM-485? I guess you could try doing a format as someone said that sped up their N95.

When I ran the other version, BrightLight S60v3 1.00, it said it wasn?t compatible with my phone. I was able to install it but to turn the LEDs on for the first time; I had to run the program then close it with the right selection key then run it again. The LEDs wouldn?t turn on the first time it would only run the second time. To turn them off the LEDs, I had to run the app and then immediately close it with the end key. Otherwise, the LEDs would stay on forever. It was kind of confusing at first and didn?t seem to run as intended. I guess the procedure is exactly the same as you described?

Sorry to hear. SE's build quality has been terrible for the last couple of years.
ATT charges you a restocking fee?

I never owned the n82 because of the lack of 3G, but I did check it out awhile back. It's a solid phone. I'm sure you'll factor in that the N86 being a slider phone will never be as solid as a candybar phone. Even if it feels solid at first, eventually the slider will wobble, but not sure by how much. Nokia didn't use all plastic for the N86, so I would think it will be a lot more solid than the N95.

most i'll spend is a cool 400, and thats still pushing it for me.
the main problem i have is whether or not i can type faster and easily on a t9 than the e75.

I have been using N82 since Dec 2007 and N86 since June 2009. So I guess I have used both these phones since they came out in the market. No I dont miss my N82. Not at all. N86 as camera and phone is much better ,barring a bit buggy ver 20 firmware. Even then N86 does fine for me as a heavy multitasking device. Only thing I miss from N82 is very obvious .. xenon :p

i just tried to set up profimail with my exchange server and it would not work. it has the option for imap, but i could not get it to work with my hosted exchange account. this was the problem last time i tried to use this app a year or so ago

speakers seem decently loud, but no real bass. the bb bold still has the best speaker sound quality for music, in my opinion. the n86 is fairly loud though as i can hear the music clearly while i am in the shower (phone on the counter :-) ) and i cant say that for all nseries phones.

i also use an htc magic and watching youtube videos and browsing the web looks much better on that vs the n86. not a deal breaker for me as i listen to more music and podcasts than watching videos.

i noticed that some pics i took did not show up in the gallery unless i picked the all folder, which is strange because i took a few pics in a row and a couple showed up in the photos folder and some did not. i power cycled the phone and the issue stopped. i was a little worried as i thought it was not saving the pics but it turns out it actually is.

i thought the battery cover would be more of a soft touch material, but it is not. i think i might try to buy a zagg shield as it gives the device more grip

The screen is nicely bigger although I do not really notice that it is, only when I put it side by side I do. If screen size is important then the N97 mini might be a better choice. I do find reading absolutely fine on it (as I did with my N82).

here are the things I dont like:

Dislike
- Standby no popup email notification on screen so unless you have only 1mailbox its a hassle to navigate to it, no screen lightup, only glow light.
The biggest problem I have!
- Camera button is harder to press than the N82, I did not realise until I was doing self comparison shots.
-No xenon- obviously I knew that before buying but have to mention it.
Due to sliding form factor they could not put in the xenon without making it very thick,
then dont make it sliding simples.
-OTA update clearly a mess creating bugs in your phone I had GPS issues because of it.
-No T9 contact access like E71 included, I was naturally expecting this, unreasonable?
-Cannot turn off auto screen rotation AND keep accelerometer functions (snooze alarm etc), (at least it can be turned off completely)
it simply does not work well with it on, too many times it changes when I do not want it to.
-Standby screen daylight visibility not so good.
-Poorer antenna than N82, I get more bars on the N82, and in funny signal areas only N82 manages to pick up, where as nothing on the N86.
(I have put an Orange sim in the N82) e.g In my room full 3G 7BAR on N82 but only 2/3BAR 3G on N86.

NEW:
No copy and pasting into the web browser, and poor implementation of copy and paste in general.

So is that a no? I'm getting the E72 to replace my Bold as my main and getting the N86 for my second line. Now if only Nokia would participate with us and release the N86 NAM already, a lot of us would be happy!

I'm a proud phonewhore. :buddies:

I just realized something. My keypad tones don't work either. Never noticed since I keep them off anyway. When I turn keypad tones on, all the other keys make sounds, except for the numeric keypad.

They are annoying, why would you like them? Anytime I hear someone texting with key noises on, want to break their phone in half.

But my gps does work. Use it daily, at least in google maps. Keypad sound not a big deal, gps not working definitely is.

Yeah, those scratches seem purely cosmetic in this case, unlike on the n97 when it actually messed with photo quality. I have come to accept that a phone with moving parts is going to have a little wear and tear. As long as it doesn't impact the performance of the device, I can live with it.

I still can't afford this phone at the moment, so I'm not in a huge hurry for it to come out. :P

From what I can tell, there still hasn't been any other phone released or announced yet that fills the N86's "niche" and form factor that is superior to the N86. That could happen at any time, though, so Nokia really needs to get its act together with the NAM market.

Hey, another question. How is the dpad?

The n82 dpad is pretty bad to me. It's ok to use really quickly, but long session landscape browsing it starts to get annoying.

So how is it for landscape browsing, and gaming for example? Comfortable and easy to use? Just ok? Terrible?

Thanks.

If it's a newly launched phone and MCO just got them, then it should be fine. I purchased the N95-3 from them when it first came out in November 2007 and everything was fine. I had other issues with MCO in terms of shipping, but the phone was perfect. I can't comment on phones that have already been released and whether or not MCO re-package them and re-sells them. It's highly likely as most retailers does the same.

I'm reserving judgment on the camera until after the next FW update. Right now, I'm quite pleased with the camera performance and have yet to be disappointed. It performs FAR better in low light situations at bars then my N95, and I personally love how the camera button feels. YMMV.

Audio quality is excellent, and is easily on par with my 2nd Gen iPod Touch. I have also hooked it up in my car a few times (aux out), and it gives a nice crisp sound with little to no hiss. I think anyone who uses this as an audio player will be pleased. It does of course use the same S60 music player, so that may be a deal breaker for some.

N82 to N86 obvious upgrades:

-2.6" OLED screen
-FP2
-NAM 3G
-enhanced web browser (along with N97)
-superior audio quality through 3.5mm
-FM transmitter
-tighter integration with Ovi services

My N95 was dying, so for me, the upgrade was a no brainer. I personally feel like the N97's camera is a downgrade from the N82...this goes double for whatever module they have placed on the E72.

Overall, I'm happy with the N86 but am still contemplating whether I want to keep it or not. If I don't send it back to Amazon this week (and eat the shipping), I'll probably keep it and enjoy it for the time being.
