*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

i must be a nobody too, because my n95 was my primary digital camera. that's one thing i regret about getting the e71, its crap camera.

i prefer to just have a phone camera that is a good point and shoot camera like the n82 or n95. its just those night time shots that i wish they would improve, and i would be totally happy. hoing that n86 apeture sensitivity can bring me closer to that reality.

I just canceled mine with no problem, only bad thing was a 45 minute hold just to talk to someone, if you think they will give you trouble just give them a good story where they can't say no!!!! The guy from fulfullment told me that they do not even have a time frame as to when they will get the phones from Nokia, so it could be a long wait that I will not do for any phone. I am now off to get a different phone that is not a NOKIA!!!!!

always gonna be a little blurry if exposure is gonna be that long.

and I doubt that even if you had flash on it would make a difference unless there was something in the air in front of you, such as mosquitoes etc..

Was this the one that some of you already got?

the process time as in, once I push the camera button done, it will take the picture. BUT it will then say processing for about 8sec, for an 8MP picture. I find that very slow. any way to sleep it up?

While this thread got bumped up, I wanted to ask, does anyone know places that are selling the NAM version? It seems like most places are not currently. I'm really kicking myself for not buying it from newegg when it was $330 a while back.

Thanks! :buddies:

I'm looking at an N86 on ebay but it's 900/2100 WCDMA. There's no 3G coverage in my area, so do I care? It should work fine for voice/text EDGE etc. .... or no?

The keypad on my Euro version isn't hard to press at all.

Yeah, mine was quite tight sliding to the multimedia keys too but it does loosen a little. You can open the slider to the keypad keys one-handed with your thumb on the phones front face, but it's too tight to do it that way sliding to the multimedia keys. Instead, one-handed you have to get your thumb hooked over the top edge of the slide. Still doable one-handed though.

It's the first N-series phone that I've just sat and played with the slide action and keys, because it feels so good!!

More CONS:
- Vibrate is very weak. Unlike the N85 which is the best vibrate I've ever known!
- Cannot save a webpage in the default browser any more. I mean you can set a webpage as a bookmark, but you can no longer save a copy of the page on your phone so you don't need to be connected to the web.
- Don't know whether this is a pro or a con, but whenever the phone is charging there is now a small white LED next to the micro USB connector. I have no idea what its purpose is.

More PROS:
- An app called BrightLight lets you use the camera flash dual LEDs as a torch. And it's BRIGHT!! Designed for S60v5 but works ok.
- Keypad lock slider switch is now on the left side of the phone. A pro for me because I use the phone with my left hand and it's now easy to use the switch with my thumb, but probably a con if you use the phone with your right hand.

P.S. No video cable in the Euro package either. It's OK for me personally though because I've already got 2 or 3 from previous N-series phones!

P.P.S. Couple of examples of panorama mode in the S60 photo thread: http://www.howardforums.com/showpost.php?p=13041152&postcount=457

Where in Canada are you? Personally I would wait for the N86 NAM even if you don't have 3G coverage in your area. Reason being is that if you ever decide to sell it, you will have a higher re-sell value than the Euro/Asia version. And you never know, one of these years you might get 3G in your area. :D But if the one on Ebay is a great deal, it's something to consider.
Voice, text, mms, browsing will work on Edge.

Any word yet on an actual release date on the nam n86?
I know according to nokia it's coming in "weeks".

But I don't understand why it's so hard to just give us a date.

No need to hack. The most complicated part is getting the sound removal app signed, which that guide explains how to do.

IIRC I installed it just fine on my phone after updating to v20, but I can't remember for sure. What you probably heard about v11 vs. v20 was that v20 can't be hacked, which is correct. This isn't a hack, though, just a patch.

If the new firmware restores the shutter sound, I don't see any reason why you can't just apply the patch again, unless they include something to deliberately prevent you from doing so in v21, which would be pretty lame!!

If anybody is wondering about the video capabilities for this phone, I just posted a bunch of videos from the Metallica show in Minneapolis. The zoom is so much better than my N82. Hoping v20 firmware will help with the blur that comes with taking pictures though.
