*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

Anyone using a screen protector on their N86? If so, what brand? Does it cover the whole front of the phone, or just the screen itself? I had a Clarivue anti-glare screen protector on my N97, it seems to make the display look a tiny bit grainy. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I got mine yesterday and it is quite snappy. I upgraded to V20 and did a hard reset and noticed the silent number keys bug in v20 although the tones are on when you start up the phone and enter any sim code or lock code but once it has booted up the number keys are silent which is OK by me since I always turn the sound off.

The only really annoying problem I have is that I have a hard time connecting to my car stereo BT handsfree. I either have to pair it every time I get into the car or make a phone car while the car stereo is on. It's like my E51 all over again. Any old phone I use like the 6682, 5800 and an Ericsson W760i connects without any problems.

Otherwise it is hard once you used a touch screen to go back to using keys for everything.

I just upgraded to the N86 from the N82. I LOVE having 3g over EDGE. I do miss the xenon flash though. I'm hoping with the next firmware update Nokia will address some of the problems associated with taking pictures. I'm not a fan of having to hold perfectly still to get nonblurry shots. Something I miss from the N82. Face detection will also be a welcome addition.

Maybe someone ought to offer him a crash course in the unlocked phone market but he does try, though. From what I've seen, he's not a rabid fanboy like some other internet bloggers.

I do!

It was more useful on the N95, where a long press would land you right in the music player (at least on the -4).

Even on the N85 it is the quickest way to both the Music Player and the Gallery (so long as you reorder the tiles in the Multimedia menu a little).

Re: The pencil key - it behaved like a "Shift" key for many purposes. (In fact, if you attach a bluetooth keyboard, "Shift" roughly duplicated its functionality). Without it, there is no way to assign "shifted" key combination (e.g. Pencil + 0) to application specific functions (e.g. Best Screen Snap or Best Torch). Or for that matter use Google Search.

Wirelessly posted (SonyEricssonK790a/R1JG Browser/NetFront/3.3 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Link/6.3.1.20.0)

So any dates yet for the release of the NAM version?

Its all about the screen for Me. Why? Because thats the part of the phone I'm gonna be staring at all day, Not the keypad or anything else.
I'm tired of having people look at me like "do I have to" when I try to show them a pic or a video on these small screens.
Plus I'm losing my freking sight trying to make out whats going on this tiny display.
Steve Jobs had it right in that keynote when he lauched the iPhone.
And the Bold still has a small screen for such a HUGE phone.

Ban the the stupid 2.4", 2.6" displays now!

The only useful function of the Media key was that it opened the Music Player on the N95 when you held it down. Something that I didn't discover until just a couple months before I sold my N95.

Hows the battery life guys? And can anyone workout where its antenna is sitting? Top or bottom? Does the reception fluctuate when the phone is in your hand?

 Nah...I'm keeping my 3GS as my main phone.....I just miss having a physical keypad phone for the weekend. I guess like the rest of us here I'm a phone freak and can't just have one phone at a time :buddies:

I'm still on v11 unbranded NAM. My phone is quite snappy and my GPS locks in a few seconds when inside my house and instantly when outside. My question is, is the camera noticeably improved with the newer firmware?(I'm not talking about features like face detection...I'm talking about the quality of the photos). As of yet I don't see any reason to upgrade unless the camera is improved.

Yeah, just as I suspected. It can't determine an exposure value to save its life.

I'll bet when we see the full size pictures we'll also see the heavy noise reduction they used.

Take an N82 or N95 in the same situation and I'll bet they both perform better.

They have heavily overcompensated for low light situations with overexposure and excessive noise reduction. More pixel sites needs a bigger sensor.

If one day the FW is intelligent enough to not apply this excessive overcorrection in well lit situations (see the oranges shot in this thread it looks cartoonish) it will happen next September.

EDIT: Found the original size photos. Yeah, horribly excessive noise reduction. And still noisy.

This won some award?

I'm not trying to be negative for the sake of being negative but seriously just use your eyes. N95 was better.

In case anyone is wondering, I have 65.4MB of free RAM after a reset and have yet to run into any out of memory problems.

On a side note, I feel like the call quality is worse than my N95. If the N95 is a 10, then this thing is a 7. I don't know if it's a deal breaker, but it is noticeable to me.
