*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

I won't ever deal with them...I know of three instances where people I know have gotten phones from them where it's clearly been used and/or farmed for accessories. They have good prices on many items, but I wouldn't use them for anything over $100 or something.

Yeah, I saw that quote too. Not sure how that would change lens flare.

But it looks like (especially in that picture) that the opening is wider. Meaning if it does scratch, it will scratch very far to the side. But no comment was made about that.

Looking where it scratches on the circle n86, the camera cannot see it anyway. Annoying non the less.

Personally I like heavy phones as well and found the original N95 to be too hollow.....I too would like a 2.8 screen, but overall, would you say this was a nice Nokia design? Also how was the speed of the phone.

If it comes out towards end of September I will be torn between this and the new E72....I know they are different phones, but I like them both....

Well this is my 3rd replacement. The other 2 were not related to the camera lens. I had this one for a few days now. I have used the camera a few times, but not a lot. No scratches yet. I will use it more during the Holidays.

Are there any scratches on yours?

I think you are confused by what we are discussing. If a camera doesnt take better pictures with a flash, then why does just about every camera made, come with a flash???
Even professional photographers use artificial lighting in professional shots. It may be a flash or it may be a studio lighting. And last I checked, I dont hold my kids birthday parties in a photograpy studio.
If you hadnt noticed, camera technology trickles down to the camera phone. At current time there is no application that allows any LED to take the same quality pictures as the xenon equipped n82. The N82 has been compared to many camera phones since its release, and has (until recently) been declared the victor.
Please remember that most people that are taking pictures with a camera phone, are not taking pictures to add to their professional portfolio. They are simply taking a picture to capture the moment. Whether its birthday party, out at the bar with friends, or sitting around a campfire. If I was to use any phone to date equipped with an LED or a dual LED flash, I would not have captured those moments.
Time will tell if the N86 has this remarkable new LED technology. But if it was so great, we would have seen it rolled out in new point and shoot cameras. The only reason that it hasn't is because it doesnt give you the best possible picture quality when using a flash. Since stand alone cameras are not as concerned about battery life and size restraints as camera phones, they do not want to decrease quality for these power improvements.

That is ridiculous! Why the heck is it taking Nokia so long to release the NAM version??? And I can bet it's not to fix the camera lens cover issue. I don't know if I'm going to bother getting the N86 at this point. Nokia better not do the same with the E72.

I can only hope that they're taking the time to fix all the bugs in V11.

The hardware is great, but I feel lucky that I am able to use most of the functions without pissing it off. Not having keypad lights half the time...and mine doesn't want to drop the data connection for some reason. The e-mail menu freezes almost like it's locked, and the best way I've found to clear it is to switch into "Offline" mode and then back to normal.

If you saw what we have to deal with in north america you wouldn't be saying that! The software out of the box was so bad it was like nokia was trying to fail. I still cannot believe how horrible the experience was, and I don't know how rogers released the phone this way. It was by far the worst experience I have had with any s60 device, bar none. I am talking about the rogers version which comes with v20 firmware out of the box. And what's worse is that this comes at a time when everyone is saying that symbian is dead or dying and nokia is under attack from critics and consumers alike and they release a pretty straight forward device with a completely messed up firmware.

it should last at least one day, maybe two with that light useage but there are many factors besides what you have mentioned that can kill it sooner. network coverage, screen brightness, apps in the background, gps, etc all make a difference.

The other thing to think about is that just because a battery can last up to two days doesnt mean you should only charge it when almost dead. that is very bad for the battery and will shorten its useful life. these batteries work better when kept topped up. there are way too many discussions in this forum regarding that subject, so do a search if you dont believe me.

The phone feels pretty solid besides a little play in the slider, so it should last a couple of years with good care, maybe more

True. There just seemed to be some discussion on whether Nokia is going to release a full 3G NAM model or not.
I know I get 850 MHz where I live (since I was able to get 3G service on my 6120C), but not sure about 1900. I'm using an N82 now so obviously 3G isn't a big deal for me, but it would be nice when I decide to upgrade.

A couple other questions:

1) For people with bluetooth headset connection issues, which version of the firmware are you using?

I was thinking of getting a bluetooth headset.

2) Is there any way to have the camera when it starts default to having the flash off, instead of in automatic mode? I can't seem to find a setting that allows this.

Anyone try v20 yet? Notice any improvements after the previous version? Has anyone been able to take good macro shots? When I had the phone (I'm getting a replacement), the close-up macro shots always came out blurry.

The player on the phone played DivX and Xvid.

What do you mean by processing the image? The time it takes after you capture an image? Or the picture to load once it's already on the phone? The former doesn't take long. The latter does take some time if they're 8MP. You can also capture images in sequence mode which captures multiple pictures very fast. Now if I'm moving fast or the other object is moving then the image is sometimes blurry.

I've only recorded two short videos, and they've never had any lag. I always used the highest quality settings. The phone captures video at 30 FPS.

Here's the BrightLight application. Tell me how it works. It's been said to work for FP2 phones and S60v5 including N97, N78, 5800. I don't have the phone right now and haven't tried the file I've uploaded. I've tried the app that was designed for v5. It worked but not as intended. http://www.mediafire.com/?rrqttjjwzxl
Don't let the LEDs stay on too long, because they'll get hot.

I originally wanted the white one too, but went with the black because it was $100+ cheaper. Now I see how dirty the white demo N86s in stores are and I'm glad I got the black one! I still think the white looks nicer-- but only if you can KEEP it white.

No, the keyboard is totally evenly lit. And the keys are VERY clicky. I don't think anyone will complain about the keypad on this phone.

Yeah, that's the kind of thing I want to avoid. I'm amazed/disappointed there isn't one that works properly on the N86 yet.

I finally managed to get a dev cert to sign Free iSMS (opda.cn's English site makes it very easy now) and I'm very glad I did.

Nokia Conversations still seems to be broken on the latest N86 firmware (you get a "feature not available" error when you try to open it) so it's great that there is an alternative threaded messaging app. It integrates pretty well into the interface (no need to launch an app) and is so much more convenient than non-threaded text messaging. I don't understand how every smartphone doesn't have this feature preinstalled (or why Conversations is still broken for nokia's flagship non-touchscreen model)

I never noticed it ever turning off. I tried it on v11 when I first owned it. It stayed on for several hours.

I thought you were getting the E72?

Silencing the Camera was discussed awhile ago HERE

I know it works on the N82 I have not tried it on newer phones, but it would have worked on your N95.

Has anyone tried this on the N86???
