I agree, but i have a 5800 here and a n85 and yes the 5800 has a larger screen which is useful for some things, but i still use my n85 everyday and then 10 min of 5800 time so i remember the touch in preparation for the n97, i still want the n86 its not just about the screen its what the device can do in such a compact size with a decent size screen to phones in that size catergory,
do you realize the bold only has a 2.6 inch screen also. :buddies:
 
I've had mine freeze up on me once when I tried to open it up, not sure what it was due to though... Slid camera cover back closed, slid phone open and closed again, and opened camera slider again and it worked fine. No error messages related to camera either... Sucks to have issues like that out of the box. Hopefully the reset will do it, keep us updated.

So far, I've found the slider on mine to be quite sturdy. Little bit of a wobble when its open for video/game use, but other than that no movement. Feels much sturdier than on the N95-8GB I had about a year ago.
 
Listen the basic physics of it all precludes having a sensor with greater pixel density performing much better than what we have seen. Just look at the progression in digital cameras over the past 4 years. Just go to DPreview and read.

The only thing they've managed to do in general is bump up the number of pixels without sacrificing low light performance too much. So they've never really helped low light performance in over 4 years. But they've been able to increase the number of pixels without hurting it much.

Sure this camera now has a real shutter instead of the stupid rolling shutter we've had all these years. They've also allowed you to change the aperture.

A real shutter helps capture sharper images with less blur in well lit situations. Variable aperture on a camera like this is mostly useless unless you plan on shooting the sun or streetlights. The aperture will be kept wide open in 99% of shots, you simply can't afford to reduce light reaching the sensor.

Sure it will be a better camera than the N95, but in low light situations it will be the same old story and worse than the N82. In daylight it will be better.

In photography light is everything. In digital photography, given that sensors have not really advanced much over the years (except for the Fuji Super CCD or Foveon but that advancement is not about low light performance) you cannot expect that suddenly this sensor is going to be that much better than what we used already. The only real way to improve light performance is by enlarging the sensor. Which is the number one motive to buy a DSLR or even better an expensive $3000 full-frame DSLR.

The N95 was already usable during the day as a point and shoot, but useless at night. The N86 will make a reasonable advance in daylight shots, but be pretty much the same story at night. No amount of mumbo-jumbo marketing or "better sensor" or "better lens" will change that. These things follow basic laws of physics. The only way to help a camera in the digital age is to put a bigger sensor in there.

You are just reading "new better sensor," and "new better lens" and hoping that it magically makes it able to take night shots all of a sudden. Where's the light coming from? Do you have any idea? This is not some magical sensor or lens that somehow can colorize infrared night vision shots. It is a more modern $25-30 assembly at best. It does not perform magic.

It will perform better during the day. Pictures will be sharper. Pictures will be larger allowing for more cropping. Night performance will be negligibly better than the N95 if at all.

Anyway, since you like to make up physics with promises of "better lens, better sensor", why don't you look at the shots from this camera that have been posted already. I saw the daylight shots and frankly it is nothing to write home about. Still very noisy in daylight. At night I wouldn't be surprised to see it perform the same or worse than the N95.

In fact as an attempt at making a photo specialized device the effort is decidedly weak for 2008-2009 given that they made devices like the N93 many years ago. The N90/N93/N91 series of phones were heroic attempts to make the best of breed products for specialized purposes.

This here is a nice phone with nice build, slim and nice looking with a modern version of S60 and an N95 camera with an updated sensor (meaning more pixels) and a mechanical shutter (remember this is no big deal - every $5 110 format POS has a mechanical shutter, I wouldn't talk it up like it's going to save the world or anything) and adjustable aperture which while nice to have is basically useless on a camera like this. It is the sort of thing that appeals to airheads who read the marketing copy and go gaga as if they've invented time travel or something.
 
I might be canceling monday. If I do, I'll give nokia a peice of my mind, because they're not gonna be touching my wallet.

Is there some kind of standard for TV-Out cables? I'd prefer to get a retractable one for travel, but the only retractables listed anywhere are for various iPods. Will any tv-out with a 3.5mm jack work, or is it some kind of proprietary garbage?
 
You really like to argue don't you? Is this the N86 forum or the camera module/lense forum? Aren't we talking about camera ability of N86 vs the best camera phone Nokia has produced thus far the N82? I was merely trying to be objective and not say one way or the other that the N86 camera will be bad sans Xenon, without seeing pictures. However, the fact and objective view is that there hasn't been a camera phone with LED that can take low light pictures better than a xenon equipped phone.

It seems to me that you've already made a conclusion that the N86 will be better than the N82 just because Nokia claims better lens and sensor....and don't say you're not since I haven't heard a word put forward from you to argue for xenon, while I've been saying that the N86 could be better but we have to wait and see. If Nokia could make the N86 the best camera phone they've produced than good...I'm happy.

Looks a little blurry, but I still think it's pretty good for being in complete darkness.
 
i'm gonna use "energy profiler" to do a battery test of my daily use, and I'll let you guys know the results. Battery assume is at 80-90% with 6 bars

I have powersaving mode on, with the clock screensaver.

***IF someone can help me out with my video problem, that would be great.***


1. after 14 mins on standby with the nokia energy profiler running and turning the phone on and off every 2mins, after charging my phone last night the results are:
63hrs battery life expected (changes by the minute)
0.08W and 3.9V

2. its been about 2hrs since my last post. used garmin for about 5mins. dropped to 50hrs life expectancy. Again, the power consumption is constantly changing, so its estimate time won't be accurate until later in the day.

3. been 5hrs and 22mins, the estimated life span of the battery is 85hrs and 47mins. I've had my phone on standby since the last time i've checked. I have 5 bars now. nokia energy profiler running in background.

4. after full charge, the program estimated I had about 100hrs, with minimum playing time, sms, web, etc. I think if you were to never activate the phone, then maybe it will last 300hrs via standby.
 
I'm fully aware of all of that. I've cooked my own ROM's before and have yet to see the type of performance gains that some people claim they get. I've used other people's ROM's and I still get the same laggy device, with ****** battery life and poor memory management.

BUT, i do have questions regarding the N86. Sorry if some of the questions have been answered, i'm only on page 35 of 133.

So my questions are regarding my N86 V20 phone,

1. when taking pictures, does anyone find the processing time takes a long time?

7-9sec for 8mp
5sec for 5mp
3-4sec for 3mp
HOW DO I speed it up?

2. when taking video, do you find the quality of the 4mp video drops significantly between high quality and standard tv video recording? like more production of horizontal lines.


3. I find that when i record on max video settings(TV quality), i get motion lag every 2sec. if i'm stationary, and i'm recording moving cars, there is a freeze in frame every 2sec. if I'm the one that is moving "ie, in a car recording the sidewalk as you drive by" there is also a moment of lag as well every 2sec.
For taking videos on my phone, with max setting, its very choppy. same with view the videos I take.

my setting for video are:

Tv quality 4mp
video stabilizer off
save to e: mass memory (also tried c: )
view video after capture off

when i'm not recording, with only the video capture on standby, when i move the camera around, its laggy and choppy. Its the same with when the video is recording.


4. when i unlock the phone, or turn the phone sideways to get the landscape view, the LCD screen shows blocks for 2sec then goes to normal, as if there is heavy lag. this only occurs if the phone isn't used for 2-3mins prior.

5.anyone find a flashlight program that works with n86 yet? like the "brightlight" software for 5800.

6. in gallery/picture viewing mode, when you get the list view of pictures in each category, and when you select to view pictures (when pictures are shown in an inverted horseshoe pattern) do you find that it is laggy? I found the 5800 picture viewing more responsive. Also, when i zoom, the picture seems blocky; but when i export to computer screen, it looks fine.


If anyone can answer the questions, that would be GREAT!

depends what you mean by VOIP..

I'm using FRING right now on my N86..

FRING supports Skype VOIP calling.. Skype to Skype and Skype calls to the US and Canada.
