You have to push down a bit harder, not "hold down". There are two stages to the button. The first one that causes it to lock on is clearly defined, but to actually take the picture you have to press a little harder beyond that. It would be nice if that second stage also had a well-defined click, but it doesn't, which usually causes you to shake the phone at the moment you take the picture- hence yakk00's suggestion
 
Nope, I'm a point-and-shoot kinda girl. I take most pics in automatic mode, and the only exception is when I turn the flash off/reduce red eye/switch to macro.

Regarding the pic of the interior of the car, yes, I was pleasantly surprised by that one as well. I doubt the xenon could have done any better! Next time I'm out somewhere dimly lit, I'll try and take pics with the N82 as well, for comparison.
 
People who reassigned it to something useful.

Less and less customizable buttons makes a phone less and less useful.
With the pencil button on the N95, you could pencil + any number on the keypad and have all sorts of shortcuts.
 
Ok, power saver in themes. Never looked at that until now. Was always off. Probably would waste the battery fast.

Put it on date now. Looks like it does move around every minute or so. Will check in an hour and let you know what it says.
 
I know I said push but I meant pull as in brackets since in my experience effectively the same result. I don't understand how Nokia is playing a part in this? Is it because they are actually pushing my email to my phone through their servers? I did take note that I could add hotmail where normally its not possible since the service is not there by Microsoft. In that case even if Nokia Messaging service ends I should still be able to use gmail and mail for exchange "pulled" right? just not hotmail.
 
how much smaller is the screen on the N86 is it still suitable to watch for long periods of time like videos .im looking for good phone that has good screen.

i did too. The gallery key was never the problem. 1-touch access to photos should be an essential.

The problem was the lag involved with opening the gallery. That was unacceptable.
 
Okay, you're taking what I said completely out of context. I was only disagreeing with your assessment of Nokia's marketing strategy, i.e. holding out features to get people to buy multiples phones (at once), for different purposes. If that were the reason there's no Xenon in the N86 (or N85), then there would have to be another phone with Xenon, but there isn't. I think Nokia has just decided that Xenon isn't that crucial. I'm not defending this decision, it just seems apparent to me that this is the decision Nokia has made.

I really don't understand what it is you're saying you've been trying to say for the past three days. My impression has been that you don't think there can be a flagship camera phone without Xenon, because it is crucial to overall camera quality. And I have disagreed and said I think sensors and lenses are more important, and Xenon is a side issue that has been blown out of proportion. And we actually have even agreed on a couple points. So I really don't know what you're talking about.
 
Sadly, mine has grown worse than my N95 (and I've dropped that old thing more times than I can count). I've really tried to love this phone, but it's going back...again. Poor build quality and no v20 FW yet have really soured me on this device :reallysad
 
I'm not sure the phone really has "drivers" you can update individually, but it should all be bundled in with the v21 firmware, which I believe almost anyone can pick up OTA (Menu | Tools | Device Mgr. | Options | "Check for updates") or through the nokia PC suite.


edit: regarding "mods" for the phone, I'm curious if there are any flashlight/torch apps now that actually support the N86. I know there are a few old S60 ones that kind of work, but i've heard reports of burning out LED bulbs or messing up the camera software, and I'd prefer to stick with something that is designed to work with this phone.
 
You guys saying it's not suppose to come out until October doesn't make sense. I have a UPS tracking number. As of 5:00 p.m. EST roughly two hours ago, it's at Memphis, TN. The facility it left from was Dallas, TX. At that rate, I'm expecting to get it before the ETA. When I talked to Nokia customer support, it seemed like a hierarchy of Nokia employees. The first people I talked to were Asian or Indian who were barely understandable. The last man I was forwarded to who gave the cancellation reference number spoke native English. Maybe those low in the hierarchy don't know what they're talking about or don't get the news until later?
 
i'll reserve judgement on the "new generation LED flash" and see if it's as good as a xenon, but if it's being marketed as a CAMERA phone, then it should not only have the best optics but the best photos in all light conditions (i.e. pitch-black at midnight)
nokia's touting it as an 8mp CAMERA with a phone, but would you buy a camera that doesn't take good pictures at night?
i hope this new dual-LED is up to snuff.
 
Sweeeeet. Now how long until nokiausa ships? oct 1st or so? ...I talked to "peter" from the chat room today, he said "by the end of this month." but it might just be a CYA move.

Hopefully I'll see some N86 NAM unboxings on youtube soon. :)
 
Thanks for the comparison shots of the N97 and N86 in front of Best Buy. Given the shadows it looks like those photos were taken at different times of day, which would create totally different lighting situations and unfortunately not make for a meaningful comparison.

That said, I do appreciate that you feel subjectively that the N86 doesn't perform that well. It's just hard to make sense of this, since it is so much in contradiction to what All About Symbian found, when comparing the N86 to the N97. GSMArena, of course, felt the N86 has a significant software flaw. But they were comparing the N86 to the INNOV8, so its kind of apples and oranges to hold this up against your comparison of the N86 and N97.

That's why I think comparison shots taken of the same thing, from the same position and angle, at the same time, in the same lighting conditions (which is what All About Symbian did), is the only way to understand the situation better.
 
Its bigger than it looks. At 113cc its almost in the class of the n810.

I am really not sure what phone I should be looking at. I made a list of the top ten things that I use my phone for. On a daily basis.

1- Clock/Alarms - Since I dont have a watch, I use the phone 10 times a day to check the time. Also use it for 5-6 alarms a day.

2- Email - I get most of my email on my phone. I dont always respond from my phone (partly because of the time it takes with the N82 keypad)

3- Calendar/Contacts - I have everything on my phone. If I need to know when or where or who, I can find it on my phone.

4- Web Browsing - Used about 4-5 times a day, but not overly intense. I dont watch streaming video except occasionally when I am stuck at an airport. I dont have an unlimited data plan, I am within wifi range most of the time during the day.

5- Camera - I use the camera every other day or so. Sometimes video. Need a good quality, low light camera.

6- Music Player/Internet Radio -

7- Voip/Voice Calls - I use my phone very little for Voice Calls, maybe 3 or 4 a day. And I use Voip whenever possible.

8-GPS - Every few days I use the GPS in the car.

So, based on this list, I am thinking that the N86 is only going to improve the web browsing and some of the Camera.

The N97 will improve the Web Browsing (bigger screen) text entry for Email, and battery life, but lose a little in the Camera.

The E72 will improve in text entry, and battery life would be great. I would lose a lot in the camera area.

So, with all of this, I just cant really decide on a clear winner. Thats why I may have to wait another year. Maybe the second or third model with Maemo.
