*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N86 8MP

This time there is absolutely nothing in the N97 that they kept us waiting for a year to see or the N86. Neither will be bought. Absolutely not.

Obviously there will be loyal Nokia customers especially abroad and they might just buy it for the name written on it. I'm sure there are people who aspired to an N95 and couldn't afford it then who see the N86 as a nice device to fulfill that desire at a good price.

I bought into this Nokia thing because they were at the forefront. I assume that most people who take the time to visit HoFo are enthusiasts who got into Nokia for similar reasons.

Well, there's nothing here for us anymore and I guess I shouldn't be berating those who are still in awe over the Nokia stuff they missed out on years ago and now can buy the latest Nokia N95 rehash for cheap.

Thanks.

On a separate question, am I correct in concluding that a normal old fashioned wired headset cannot be used with the N86? It seems like when it sees the three ring connector on the headset I have, it thinks it's headphones or the like (I get the "enhancement" options: Headphones, Lineout, TV-out, and Music Stand). Only with the four ring connector for the headset that came with the phone does it treat it as a headset with a microphone. Or am I just missing something?

Thanks for the pictures Nikki. I am glad to see some real life pictures taken in dimly lit locals. The two pictures of the Nikki sign are interesting. The n96 definately captures a lot of light without the flash. But you can see a lot of blur on the pic without the flash. (or maybe it was Nikki moving a little)

The pic that I find the most promising is the one taken in the car. You can see how the flash filled some hard to reach areas. Like down by the gas pedal. Most LED flashes would have trouble illuminating the dash of the car, much less the small, hidden areas like this.

Nikki, have made any manual changes to the camera? or are you taking all of these pictures in automatic mode?

Take the new price you see them for on ebay, and subtract $100 because you used it.
You may get a few more bucks, but to be on the safe side at least account for a $100 loss.

I would take N97 over N86 or N85. You get QWERTY, bigger screen & 32GB for the same camera! No, there isn't much difference between N97 & N86 in terms of picture quality for day to day use.

Yeah, I have a N85 (well, theoretically because it's in for repairs, but I own one!). I must say that the design of this phone (the n86) ? particularly the keys ? is absolutely hideous. It looks really cheap. That's just my 2 cents.

I'll keep my N85, so long as it works once I get it back.

hahahah its the itch that can never be satisfied. the n86 looks no doubt intriguing but my only gripe would be whether or not i would be able to type efficiently on the t9. If i decide that i cant, i may just pick up a n85 again as a play phone. Hopefully the release of the n86 will let the n85 be on sale alot more frequently

Hopefully what's taking so long is that they are fixing anything the european users found to be a problem or less than par.

People have really been criticizing nokia very harshly of late, the last thing they need is another screwed up phone on the market.

And tixx, good luck cancelling a nokia pre order.

when the phone comes down in price, you'll see a variant w/ a xenon announced. happened when the N82 was announced after the N95. at least, I HOPE SO!
and yes, i bought my N82 solely because of the xenon, same with my wife. she had an N73 and i had an N80. i'd have been happy sticking with it but the xenon was great. not a REPLACEMENT for a PNS camera, but it sure helps when you need a shot right away.

You probably have the same one as mine. Look under the battery on the label and you will a line that labelled as "CODE:". The first 7 numbers are your product code.

Mine is 0590552.

I changed mine to the other generic NAM code: 0580950.

After doing so, reboot your phone for changes to take effect.

Then use NSU (as OTA will not work yet). After updating with NSU, OTA will now work for any future releases as now your phone will be flashed with this new product code.

Hope that helps. Happy flashing.

This is a bit like a doctor, Dr A, in an elderly home saying, "the fastest people around here have always used canes to wal. This is a fact"......

.......Manwhile some smart doctor, Dr B, figured out that instead of building better crutches, maybe he could instead replace their hips with better ones!!!

..however Dr A is so obsessed by canes that misses the point entirely!!

Enjoy the xenon cane man. Maybe there can even be xenon crutches too! :)

But I think most folks with some perception are more interested whether Nokia are putting in a better sensor and lens in this thing. Because the FACT that you keep missing is that all the cameras you are obsessed about with xenon......had crippled lenses and sensors! They dont need a better crutch - they need a hip replacement. That would be the Dr B approach.

My friend, I start to wonder if the problem is that you are actually being logical. The other side of the aisle is simply shouting "xenon!", xenon!" "xenon!". Maybe logic is too much here.

For a sub $400 camera phone, it takes some decent pics. Definately alot easier than carrying my digital cam everywhere.
