*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia E71

At least the E71 looks like it's getting skinnier from the E61...that was my biggest complaint. I saw an E51 in the store and it looked really classy and solidly built. I like how the E71 is shaping up :2thumbs:

If we are talking about GPS signal, accuracy and ttif, that would be affected by whether A-GPS can be used at the location you are at, i.e. if there's GSM coverage (keep in mind it uses data, but only about 4-7KB per ttif). It could still pick a signal even without A-GPS but the chip is weaker and would require much longer time to get a fix (I've tried it with Nokia N95 8GB without A-GPS and sometimes takes over a minute, maybe more). With the A-GPS, I find it faster than any standalone BT receiver I've used, and keeps the lock as well as any.

As for navigation solutions etc., you should read the sticky in this forum " GPS and Mapping Guide for Beginners", which has some information on navigation software available for s60. I personally like Nokia's maps, but some people don't (routing sometimes could be weird etc., haven't tested extensively the new version yet) . It has most functions, a few are not there, but does a good job and has very good graphics, imo that is. POI's are ok, not perfect, but you could use it together with google maps, e.g., to find a POI if not available on the Nokia Maps (that of course would have some higher data usage). I prefer maps that could be stored locally (as nokia's maps, garmin, tomtom etc.), since they incur no data charges and could be used out of gsm coverage. Nokia's maps though are subscription based (from a month to a year). I got a 3-year North America maps subcription for v1, which was at the price of a 1-year now (it incl. south america now too). I had issue with maps 2.0 with the license and Nokia CSRs weren't very helpful, but to my surprise since 2.0 moved out of beta, it automatically activated the licence on my E71 based on my SIM and gave me the remaining 2.5 years (didn't actually expect that).

Screen is smaller on the E71, that could be an issue for navigation, though it looks sufficient, if not perfect. There's no substitute for a dedicated Nav system, imo (I've used my N95 for that with my old car, and it did a decent job though).

I'm going to Montreal next week (1,000 kms one way drive) and might test it a little more. I have a 7in touch-screen built-in nav system in my car (with sirius trafic info) and don't really care to use my phones' navigation much (still like it as a backup and just in case). I would def use the E71 in Montreal in walking mode with Nokia's maps and see how well that works.

Hello guys! i saw somewhere mention a full body shield for e71 and i was just wondering how that works? does it cover the full phone front and back and how does it affect the tactile feedback of the phone?
Also do you guys think its a good idea? dont wanna get this baby scratched!
Thanks

I'm very picky about the construction / build quality of my handset. I've never really picked up a blackberry that I thought had even close to 'decent' build quality. That being said, out of all the BB units, the Curve has probably the best of the lot. However, I'm hearing rumors that the Bold feels a bit on the cheap side in terms of the quality of the plastic, so that alone will probably sway my decision towards the e71. I've always been impressed by the build quality of the nokia e-series, particularly the slide mechanism on the e65, which is one of the most durable slide phones I have ever used...

gracias, thats the info i needed. so apparently i can rest assured that my package has NOT shipped yet, but i bought it on monday, 7/7 too

..you can never trust bearded women with these things

I just received mine as well and it looks and feels great. But i have to say, reception is pretty bad. It is about on par with my iPhone which had horrible on reception. My provider is T-Mobile. Now i am in on the 19th floor of an office building, my blackberry has never dropped a call here, where as my E71 has dropped 3 calls already. I don't know if i have a defective unit or what.

Okay after 24 hours with the phone here are my impressions. Well as you might have read maps was freezing on me. did a hard reset and al works good so far. I believe it had to do with the settings I originally set. Im on prepaid in Singapore so I cannot utilize GPS correctly, so hence it was freezing trying to connect.

As far as the phone features go, call quality is very good. clear good tone, no issues at all. Wifi strength is strong, well I'm comparing it to my ipod touch, and it blows it out of the water. Also faster in puling up web pages.

Menus are fast, not really any lag time. If you multitask sometimes maybe a second delay but that's it.

I cannot access contacts by typing the names while at the home screen, it should work according to the help menu, but I can't find it yet.

Ring tones are loud. They also have a 3d sound effect that works too. I haven't heard an N series to compare but so far no complaints. Much better than my previous Motorola Q9h. Vibrate also is strong.

Leather case is nice but it will take you a few times of using it to know how to take the phone out quickly without fear of dropping it.

Yes the phone is a fingerprint magnet, but to be expected.

Attachments open up fairly quickly. Was suprised by this. I love this feature.

Also comes with business card scanner. basically takes a pic and registers the info in your contacts.

Has a bar code reader. I tried this but haven't gotten the hang of it yet.

Predictive text works quite well. Much better than Motorola. It helps because the keyboard is small, so if you make a mistake it is sort of similar to that of the iphone. About 95% correct on guesses so far.

Camera is the weakest link of the phone. Hopefully Nokia releases a software upgrade to fix this. It is a shame since the phone is great otherwise. outdoor pics look okay as seen in the examples, but low light indoor pics not so.

reception is solid, no issues with that.

no loose parts, everything is solid

Battery life is great so far. On wifi, calling, messaging and hardly a dent.

Themes that come with it are basic, so if you need more you will have to find it from an outside source.

Ring tones are good, loud, solid, good selection, but personal preference on that.

Screen is bright. Just have to turn it up a bit that's all. Video is okay, no real issues.

That's all I can think of so far. I am new to Symbian, so I have a lot to learn but so far I am happy with the device. Just wish I was post paid to utilize the 3g.

I have done all this and that what's annoying me. I am well used to pairing devices and my previous N95 worked fine so I can't figure out what the hell is wrong. My computer won't even see the phone and the phone won't see my computer so either way doesn't work even though both computer and phone will pair with other devices.

I also try syncing my contacts online with Ovi but it not working perfectly either. Would a hard reset solve this

this is very true. but if you use an app like profimail it is a million times better email solution. it shows the email in full HTML, the interface is very colorful and looks like a windows application. it should be the defaul email app. try out the trial.

EDIT: sorry i kinda misread your post. but profimail is still much more slick. all s60 phones have the same boring email/messaging app. E series are slightly better than N series though. but compared to a blackberry, nokia s60 does not even compete regarding email. no s60 phone does. the advantage IMO over blackberry is for users who need email, but only regular light usage like checking read-only and the occasional quick reply. the other s60 stuff like apps and the OS itself, plus build quality and nokia name is the draw. BB is still email king though. than again, e71 is an E series geared towards business...so who knows.
