*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia E71

Awesome review Trent. Thanks for taking the time. Your comment re: the battery door having 2 release buttons , reminds me of my old e61i. Same thing there. It did take me a bit to get used to it. Always that learning curve, right?

Uhm, I know exactly what "proprietary" means -and RIM's IS proprietary. For the question asked, that was the correct answer as it was not an OS supplied by another vendor such as WinMo or Symbian (UIQ/S60).

As for the BB operating system, I am not going to get in to as debate as to whether or not it is "better" or not. Suffice to say that it is behind in many ways the other operating systems on the market, the ONLY thing holding the dominance of the BB is the integration with push email. Who the hell would buy a Blackberry for the operating system alone?

P.s. RIM will have probably the most to lose if Apple sticks push email on their (toy)phone as people have been screaming for.

***A friendly reminder for everyone: I'm also excited about this upcoming Nokia ESeries device. However, showing the picture from unknown origin is one thing, posting/hotlinking directly to the Vodafone roadmap presentation/slides/pictures which CLEARLY classified as "CONFIDENTIAL" isn't a good idea. HoFo has been threathened by service providers & manufacturers w/ possible legal action before. To maintain a balance between the spirit w/ the latest, greatest gadget trend and good PR w/ service providers & manufacturers, I want everyone to use a common sense approach when discussing topics as such. http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1305829

the long press on the soft keys are factory define, AFAIK it can not be changed, not in any known nokia phone so far...

and message reader and voice dial is far from being useless...

I have no clear evidence of this but I would imagine that Nokia will annouce the E71 soon and will ship pretty quickly after the announcement. I would imagine that it is going to be available through Europe first and then make a splash in NA. I mean everyone else has announced their new smartphones so why hasn't Nokia. Maybe they want to shorten the time between announcement and availibilty. Maybe they want it to hit right at the end of 2nd QTR. for a boost in business performance.

Branding REALLY URKS me BIG time by providers. WHY?:

1> Brand means you should be responsible & stand behind your product/service.
2> When a user has an issue with their PHONE working with the service, the Co-branding or most of the times the ONLY branding on the phone is AT&T; AT&T redirects you to the manufacturer (insurance plan or not; insurance usually to the insurance rep)! This causes confusion to end users. Sometimes end users are redirected BACK to AT&T BECAUSE of the Branding done by the provider (any).
3> Testing signaling on the network for approval, loading applications, configuration settings aside, BRANDING the firmware outright - not only leads to brand confusion, support confusion, and lengthy testing periods and WAIT times to market, it also adds to costs past down to the end user that really isn't necessary?! In this day and age the END user is GOING to change the ringtones, Themes, Wallpaper to their OWN choice - even the LEAST informed user wants to customize to their own choice. So why waist the money to even bother?!

Arrrgh! Venting machine OFF.

Just a heads up to any Australian readers here -

Organizer World (http://www.ow.com.au/Nokia-E71-Smartphone-Grey-Steel#) and Calculator King (http://www.calculatorking.com.au/product_info.php?products_id=1045) are quoting release dates of 10 July 2008 and mid-July respectively, both with an expected RRP of 595 AUD.

Haven't confirmed which model they're selling yet, but Calculator King seem to be selling the 850/2100 model (aka the Telstra model).

Wow, the arse end of the world (I mean that in the nicest possible way) seems to be getting stuff before you guys in the states. How does that feel? :)

Well I can understand him coming from an Nseries phone..

All the Nseries I have used are loud.. The loudest was the N95!!

and so far.. The loudest Eseries I had is the E71.

So can you imagine him with a E61?
