*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia E71

Oh, I dunno...seems like Nokia has it pretty well planned. They are probably set to release the E71i around the same time as the new iPhone and BlackBerry devices are set to drop...in the next month or so. Makes sense to me. Nokia is setting itself up as the alternative to the BlackBerry, which some still find too "businessy" and boring...and as a multimedia phone that will attract those who want the "fun" of the iPhone, but can't warm up to a touchscreen and virtual keyboard.

That's been a glaring weakness of Nokia for a long time: they take too long to get a new product out the door. Multimedia is still their strong suit, plus the open nature of S60, but Blackberry has definitely struck first in this particular market space (QWERTY smartphone with 3G). And the longer they wait, the farther out in front Blackberry will get with the customer base. The good news is that the BB 9000 isn't shipping yet. Nokia still has time to take back the thunder, but that time is fading quickly.

For some reason when I use Nokia maps and I have t-zones set up as the default access point it always says no internet connection, go to tools-go online to access. When I do this it waits a second and then says the same thing. Anyone else on t-mobile having this problem with nokia maps?

Yeah, my parents are like that too...then again, they're now carrying Blackberry Pearls WITHOUT INTERNET SERVICE. And my sister and BIL are carrying Curves...again, WITHOUT INTERNET SERVICE (though at least they text just enough to justify a QWERTY). Originally, my parents asked "which free phone should I get that will give me the best service?" I told them to get a Nokia...they're in an iffy signal zone, and they should really be sticking with Nokia or Motorola. I guess they were bored with their RAZRs.

Know why my father eventually got a BB? It comes with a Breakout game. :hehehe: Hmm, that reminds me, I need one for S60...

For whatever reason, Nokia actually has 2 model number codes for N71-2 (you can search for code numbers on the intrawebs). One of the codes is enabled for update, the other is not. A few people on the web were able to change model codes and do the update with varying results.

For me categories are important cause if I'm in a city and I want to look up restaurants I've eaten at, it's hard to scroll through hundreds of contacts....that's why for me categories are important. You can set up Nokia "groups" on Outlook as well, but I'm not sure about BB...Regardless, it's something I would like to have.....there's no saying that Nokia couldn't implement both solutions.

hehehe... you go ahead rap, m close behind you...

but it will take a while before i can grab one, coz i need an the unlock version... meanwhile, i might ask for the latest E90 for testing... ;)

Hmm. Yes this SHOULD be in the wiki. I'll do my best.

Some 4-5years ago, S60 (version 2nd Edition, FP1/2 = Feature Pack) phones not as advanced today but still with MANY applications had a particular issue. Security of applications (by Joe Rock the self educated coder in university, or large corporations like EASports that employed TEAMS of them) was at an all time low. Especially when the NGage & NGage QD handhelds debuted with such great games, ppl didn't like paying $30US for them and hackers found a way to emulate the /System/BIN contents of the phones Firmware folders (C, E, Z drive I'm not sure which). Certain files that permitted NGage games to work on only the NGage handhelds where soon hacked or the games themselves and the hardware (cpu), and RAM in similar phones allowed these hacked games to work. IMEI restricting didn't seem to work too well because it relied on a file that the software needed. Applications soon after where also figured out and you can IMAGINE how EASY it was to have hacked games/apps on just about ANY S60 2nd Edition phone you wanted.

This caused a LOT of pain in the industry and thus Symbian Signed was created - not just for S60 3rd Edition, but also for UIQ 3. However, its taken a little while for Hackers to do the same, copyright infringement (sourcing, using, sharing hacked apps/games) is NOT as abundant as it was several years ago. Part of that is the current state of the world economy fairing better than it was several years ago (US consumers excluded as a whole; but there is a LOT of iPhone App Store purchases - over 30Million US$ worth).

Thats the best of an initial explanation of WHY Symbian Signed exists I can give you. HOW to Sign applications for use with your individual phones' IMEI I have no clue as I'm searching for that info as well. Maybe others such as Ricky, Marc, JonT, etc can explain it better - they have switched amongst many S60 3rd Edition phones.
