*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia 6650 (RM-324 6650d-1bH) NAM 3G 850/1900

It sounds like you and I are in the same boat. My contract with another carrier just expired and I switched to AT&T. I have the 6650 coming in the mail currently.

What have you liked and disliked? Have you found the keypad to be a problem as some have mentioned? What about the PTT button? Are the exterior touch keys as fiddly as some say they are?

How does the OS do? I'm told there isn't a lot of free ram (~19MB or so). Has this been a problem for you?

Basically, I'm interested in your opinion in general.

Yeah sorry dude... I really wanted to like it as I prefer flip phones, but it just had too many problems, and I'd rather spend more money and get something I'm happy with than spend little money but be unhappy with it... I'm lookin' forward to my N79 NAM, too bad it's not a flip but hopefully I can get used to it (otherwise I'll be returning that too)... :buddies:
 
You do have to enable GPS chipset use in Google Maps' settings, IIRC. Are you saying the option to do so does not even appear? Faulty, I'd say.

What's your firmware version? *#0000# at the Idle screen.
 
My 6650 has become SUPER stable since I uninstalled Ovi Maps 3.0, frustrated about the lack of availability of the new 3.03 that includes the free Navigation.

I can *usually* safely run any 2 of the following apps simultaneously now:
- Mobble/Last.FM
- Nokia Radio
- AT&T NavTeq GPS (yeah, I pay them 5 a month for this, worthwhile the 2-3 times a month I have to use this because my Garmin is 4 years old!)
- Google Maps
- Waze Social GPS
- BuddyWay trip tracker (Symbian native, not Java)

Not dissatisfied, considering how weak the phone is overall!
 
I returned my also - not because I didn't like it 'cause I did. But one of my "must haves" was an FM radio and all the early specs I'd seen on it indicated it had one, and it hit ATT stores before it hit the website. Also, I had a little problem with the keypad being a little out-of-whack with the GPS key but other than that I really liked it.
 
It *should* be, logically, but it's not. The only time I ever encountered errors was when I had both Nokia Email Beta and Jaiku running, and tried to use the browser. The odds of most people who will buy the 6650 having that much running is very slim.
 
this is great news. now the masses can experience REAL S60, as long as the firmware isn't so locked down. Sounds like this won't be the case.

This just might be the "breaking of the ice" for Nokia and AT&T to bring a REAL S60 phone to the market.
 
I'm curious if anyone else has had trouble inserting a microSD card. When I look at the slot, it seems like the silver metal part of the slot is a bit up and to the left of the slot in the black plastic housing. When I insert the card, it goes partway in and then the notch in the card catches on the black plastic housing, and the card wants to turn counterclockwise.

Just wondering if I got a bad unit or if I just need to shove harder.
 
Colbey, it sounds like you're inserting the card upside down. The microSD slot cover shows the orientation of the card.

I've had my 6650 for two weeks and I think I will keep it. I installed MagicKey and was able to remap the annoying GPS button. Now I rarely make a mistake. I wish the D-pad was raised or had some kind of texture. Moving around with the D-pad feels so ambiguous.

I installed CalSyncS60 to sync Google Calendar with the built-in calendar. That's a pretty sweet app.
 
Your phone thinks that it is a car at the other end of the cable. Seriously, the car symbol shows up when you pair up with a bluetooth carkit. I donno the name of the profile..
 
Razurluvr - I'm with you on the Ring volume. It's not nearly as loud as my N75, 6230 or 6102.

BUT - the manipulation of stuff you can do on the front screen is kinda neat though. (Trying to talk myself into keeping it !!!)
 
Still *not* hating mine ... but i can't realistically afford another NSeries after my (admittedly meager) N75 died. This is a step up(ish), however tiny, and I'll live with that.
 
I think there is a way to disable the soft keys with MagicKey but you have to play with the program to figure the specific key code which corresponds with the soft key's code. Again this can be VERY time consuming. I have not yet been able to find a legend or any sort of an original keymap for this or any other phone. Is there a programmer out there?
 
Has anyone successfully used a key mapper program to map the camera, media net and GPS key to not do anything? I installed Virtual Key, but I could not get it to map those keys.
 
Well, after several weeks of looking into the various AT&T phones avaliable, I went ahead and got a 6650 on Monday. Price was a big concern, and I didn't want a huge touch screen to worry about scratching/breaking. This is the first device I've had that even comes close to being a "smart phone", and so far I'm still trying to get used to it's quirks. The only app I've installed has been Google Maps, which works flawlessley. I may look into a key mapper to make the PTT and volume keys more user friendly, but as I have small fingers I haven't had the issues others have with the actual keypad. The main thing I don't like is that you can't set the external touch keys to lock automatically without also locking the main keypad with the same elapsed time while the phone is open. Currently I'm manually locking the extenal keys every time I close the phone. I also wish you could enlarge the time and date on the external screen. The only other big issue I've had is with the USB data cable. I didn't price one at the dealer figuring I could get one cheaper someplace else. But the actual plug type is hard to find around here, I ended up spending $15 on a rocketfish cable at Best Buy. It was marked as a charging cable, but the salesman assured me it would work for data. Shock, it didn't although the Nokia adapter it came with worked fine with a cable I already had. I'll be returning it as soon as I receive the one I ordered online last night for $5. Othewise, I like it's looks, and while the camera isn't the best it's a lot better than the VGA one on my last phone. Speaking of, I actually liked the flashlight function on the Pantech C-300, is anybody working on an app that would let me manually activate the flash on the 6650? This thread and the Symbian Guru's page are the most informative I've found so far, a great resource for those new to the S60 OS.
