*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia 6650 (RM-324 6650d-1bH) NAM 3G 850/1900

I got one last night for my son. He wanted a rugged phone because he's pretty hard on them, and I used my influence to get him to go for S60 (I'm a terrible father). After he went to sleep I went through it pretty good (I told you I'm a terrible father).

Anyway, I understand what you're saying razrluvr--the keypad is flat. But Nokia did something pretty cool on this one. Each key has raised numbers so you can feel them as you slide across the pad. I'm sure it will take a little getting used to, though. As for the extra AT&T keys, yeah, I don't really like them either, and I've accidently hit them a couple of times. The Navigator key is right below the down d-pad button and gets in the way. But that, too, is one of those have-to-get-used-to-it things. Those of you with N95's know about accidently hitting the wrong buttons, right?

I'm not sure why razrluvr had video playback problems. I played a 3GP video flawlessly. I'll try some other formats tonight and let you know.

I only installed a couple of apps (Maps and Nokia's Advanced Calculator), but so far I haven't had any crashes. The only issue I've had is that BT doesn't want to turn off. I've had to reboot to get it to turn off. Odd.

All-in-all, I'm pretty impressed with this phone. It feels very solid, I like the brushed aluminum (or whatever metal that is), and it has all the goodness of S60. And for $70 it's worth every penny. I'm hoping there will be some new firmware at some point se we can free it from AT&T bondage.

So, my recommendation? Go get it if you need a solid, inexpensive S60 phone.

Can you expand a bit on the keypad? Is it really hard to feel the numbers without looking right at them?

Not sure if I remember about the way nokia's work, there are ringer profiles but not ringer ID's. Is that correct? So you can't assign a ringtone to a specific contact, but only to a group?

Also, if you could, maybe a explain a bit about the notification lights?

Thanks for your input.

Does this phone not charge by USB. I left mine hooked up to the computer (in MTP mode) overnight and woke up with a dead battery. Phone wouldn't turn on 'till I plugged it into the wall.

Here is the unlock procedure I got from AT&T:

1. Power on the handset.
2. Press the # key once.
3. Press the * key three times (will display a "P").
4. Press the * key four times (will display a "W").
5. Press the * key two times (will display a "+" sign).
6. Enter the unlock code.
7. Press the * key two times (will display a "+" sign).
8. Press the 1 key.
9. Press the # key one time. The handset is now successfully unlocked

I just got a 6650 as my second cell phone ever. My old one being a 6085 which just died for no apparent reason the other day. Anyway, I noticed while on a call yesterday that this heats up while on a longer call is this normal because of the size of the battery or the materials of the phone? I have read through all the posts and haven't seen anyone mention this. Is this just me not being used to this type of phone or something? or is this a real problem?

Hey ontario, I was able to install the apps mentioned above, and I was then able to install MagicKey. The mapping of keys works great. I just mapped my MediaNet, GPS, and Camera buttons to do nothing.

However, I have been unable to get MagicKey to automatically start when the phone is turned on. I selected the option in MagicKey for "Start on Boot", but it doesn't seem to work. After turning the phone on, I have to start MagicKey and then exit the app in order for it to be activated again.

Is there something else I need to do?

Thanks...

Well isn't EDGE almost as good? I'm not sure, but I thought it was in there to round out a phone released in a European mkt.

As for the 2GB card, yeh, but the price I'd pay for no branding, well, there's another 'charge'. Just way too heavy a price with all the branding, but I'll make consessions for fully loaded S60 flip (ooh, don't even speak of that junkie N75, AKA hinger).

Still curious on the FP2. I'll have to look on the Symbian site. I think it is mostly the signed apps & a couple of *visual* enhancements.

Appreciate everyone's commentary.........

I just got mine today and so far I'm kind of disappointed... here's some reasons why...

1) the keypad kinda sux... there's a web browser button, camera button and TeleNav button and they're all placed close together so I keep hitting them by accident and the program will start to open up and then I'll have to close it... also the keypad is pretty flat without much differentiation btw the buttons...
2) the outside buttons are almost too sensitive... I haven't used the music player in my pocket yet so I have to try it and see how it responds but so far I've hit the keys by accident while holding the phone and the music player playing simultaneously...
3) I use Opera Mini and there's no way to turn the permissions off completely on it or presumably other Java apps... it just has the "ask once" or "ask everytime" option but not the "don't ask again/ ask never" option... so, that's kind of annoying...
4) I've been trying to get Skyfire for Symbian loaded onto it and so far have been unsuccessful... it's giving me some error... it's SUPPOSED to work on S60 phones so I don't know what the problem is...
5) Earlier I was using Opera Mini and the phone just froze up on me(!) and I was unable to exit the program OR even turn the phone off(!)... I had to pop the battery out and then put it back in again (in which case I had to reset the time and date again)... I HOPE this doesn't happen again...
6) the earpiece and the charger ports are both on the bottom right side of the phone which kind of sucks... and as if that wasn't bad enough, there's a stupid little plastic cover that goes over the holes so when you're using the headphones for example it's just kind of dangling there... it looks like it's gonna break off one of these days... I don't know why they decided to put a cover there(!)...

Let's see what else... I'll post more as I think of it...
It seems like probably AT&T messed it up by putting all there crap on it... I'm getting memory errors and it's probably cuz they have so much crap on there (that's my guess)... I'm still up in the air about whether I'm gonna keep it or not...

Oh yeah... someone here on the forums said that the Nokia web browser can view Flash (I'm sure it works on the N95, but...) but I tried going to a site that uses Flash and it gave me memory error, so NO, I don't think it works on this phone... that's why I want to use Skyfire, but so far I've been unsuccessful... if I can't get Skyfire to work then I'll probably return it... I don't like that I always have to give Opera Mini permission... if there was an unbranded version of this phone or unbranded firmware, then I bet it'd be pretty awesome... but so far I'm underwhelmed...

1. You should be able to
2. Many different ones, but you should try to install the Nokia SW; FYI Mail for Exchange apparently also works
3. depends what you want to do with your phone

Oh yeah... here's some more gripes with the phone...
1) the ringer volume seems really low, even on the loudest setting... I don't know if I just got a defective one or if they're all like that... I'll have to wait and see...
2) Also I tried to use my own mp3 as a ringtone and it said that the file was too big as it exceeded 300kb(!)... it worked fine on my S40 6267 so I don't see why it should be a problem with this supposedly awesome S60 phone(P.O.S.)(!)... so I'm not liking that... I'm gonna see if I can squeeze the song down to under 300kb, but that's not very much, so I dunno...

Glad to see more 6650 users!

speakin of dim, does anybody notice the exterior screen going completely black when the phone is flipped open (where the at&t logo is). Has anybody been able to keep that lighted on and is there a way to replace that logo?

on the motorola razr, that exterior logo was customizable..

thanks

If ATT did indeed test this phone, and there were "out of memory issues", it would have never made it to the final gate. But hey, who knows. There have been a lot of buggy phones released by ATT.

Hi all,
I've never had a 'smartphone' before, and currently, with AT&T's lovely 'customer retention' department, I was offered this phone for $20 (with 2-year contract, obviously).
I currently use just about every feature of my Nokia 6126, and I hope that this new phone can do the same, and better...

here's what I definitely need from the phone:

1) when a headphones cord is connected to the phone (a 2.5 to 3.5 mm adapter), and this is plugged into my car's aux input, can I use it as a hands-free device ?:) Will the phone pick up my (driver's) voice if it's laying on the passenger seat? - I do this with the 6126 all the time without paying for bluetooth installation in the car, and it sounds better than just putting phone on loudspeaker..

2) Can I create playlists out of mp3's that are loaded into the memory card? In the 6126, I can only create playlists beforehand, when the phone's connected to the NokiaSuite...

3) Any mp3 loaded into the memory card can be used as a 'ringer' melody, correct?

4) This will work as a UMS (universal storage device) when plugged into any PC... - so it will just show up as an extra drive, without a need to install NokiaSuite, and I can dump whatever I need onto it (any sizes, extensions, etc) (up to the memory card size limit, of course), yes?

5) It will display large (4-5 mb) .jpg's and other picture formats (not just the picts taken with the phone, but the ones loaded onto the card)?

6) The one thing that was lacking from 6126 was ability to display simple .txt files..
Will this one display contents of a .txt file from memory card? (or will this require purchase of SmartOffice?)

7) I can download Gmail's email app, yes?

8) In my 6126, Gmail email app would correctly display Russian-language emails (Cyrillic letters). Is this phone able to display anything other than Latin characters in emails? Or, even better, if I can load a text file with Russian text and this phone will display those correctly, I'm running out to get this phone!!

9) Not that I've used this feature much, but it has come in handy at Walmart's picture printing kiosks a few times: I could send .jpg files directly to the kiosk using bluetooth file transfer.. So at home, I would dump all picts that I want to print out to a separate folder on the phone memory card, then go to Walmart and either hook up phone to the kiosk via USB cord, or send jpg's through bluetooth file transfer...
Will this phone do this?

10) Will is play videos that were not taken by the phone? I had a few .avi files on my PC that I converted to 3g2 format and placed on the phone. The phone opened them no problem, and eventhough the screen was a bit small for watching an entire movie, it was useful enough to keep my toddler occupied with a cartoon when necessary :)
Will I be able to do something similar with this phone?

11) Is there a 'flight' mode? Basically, this was useful when I wanted to use all the features of the phone without actually being available for calls... Like when I wanted to turn off any connectivity and just be left alone with my movie or mp3 player

12) Ability to record voice? I used to just record short reminders for myself

13) Ability to record a phone conversation? 6126 had that but would beep every few seconds to let the other party know they're being recorded - useful for when someone is dictating directions or phone numbers... that way I could just re-listen to the saved file when I needed to without writing anything down

I guess that's about it..
If someone could run down all the points of the phone and let me know, that would be great!!! I know it's a lot of work, but this might help out others as well to use their phone in novel ways :)

thanks,
Sofia

Can you change everything back again if need be?(like if you're gonna return the phone for example)... Basically, are the changes that you make reversible?... It won't screw up the phone?... Can you disable the keys?(like just put nothing?)
