Folks, all BEV receivers, including the 4100, get software updates via the satellite, not the phone line. You do not need to have a phone line connected to receive an update.

You do need the phone line connected to order PPV directly. Having the phone line connected may also save you a phone call from BEV, checking to ensure you're not account splitting.

Hi Folks...new to all this. We have a 4 receiver setup, on a multi-receiver dish (we live in a condo), but when we originally set it up, only had 1 receiver available...the other 3 were to be delivered next week. We setup #1, and all is fine. Now, I have the other receivers, and on my attempt to plug in #2...I'm not sure what's going on.
Issues:
- originally plugged unit in, turned on, it went through a process of "finding the satellite signal" indicating satellite EV91, transponder 32 or 24, progress 1 of 5, 2 of 5, etc...
- then that cleared and it was "downloading the interactive application" (message listed as #342 in the top right corner)
- after quite some time, that cleared and now it was "downloading the guide" I believe....after more than 3.5 hrs, this still showed 0 progress (there was a progress bar at the bottom of the screen). I decided something must be hung up, so I stopped monitoring this, and was able to go into the MENU and look around. Signal strength, all that.

I ended up turning off the machine because I had to go to bed (it was about 2:30am by this time)

This morning, I turned it on, it did it's same first analysis again (finding signal, the 1 of 5, 2 of 5, etc)....but NOW, it reads ERROR 004, about doing a CHECK SWITCH...the problem is....at this stage, I cannot use the MENU Button or anything else on the remote...I can't cancel the error message, or "OK" it...it just stays on the screen...so I can't even do the CHECK SWITCH test.

Does anyone have any ideas? Do I need to call Skydish to get this 2nd (and then #3, and #4) all inialized or something?

If memory serves me rite..the screen saver can be disabled by pressing menu->6->1->5 ( i think, or the option for updates). there u should find a option to enable and disable.

Its been a while, since i used a 4100 system, but im pretty sure the screen saver can be removed..

Let me know if it works out

Its not drop outs while i'm viewing, its a total loss of audio when i turn on the receiver (cancel the screen saver by pressing select) in a morning. It doesn't happen a lot and I can't pin it down to anything i have been doing or watching.

Question about the 4100...

Can I use this unit for OTA tuning WITHOUT a subscription to BEV? Are there any challenges setting it up for the first time without a subscription?

Could any of you suggest better units for OTA tuning?

Thanks.

The guide in the 4100 is different from any other model. It looks like the one the dual tuner models use but is more basic (less colours). The menus are the same as the dual tuner models. The system info screen looks like the new system info screen on the 3100.

hey i was just wondering how i can turn on subtitles when watching normal tv?

Thanks,
Matt

Yes, as you can see this unit had, and perhaps still does have audio issues in DD. Not that XVue had many programs in DD anyway, somewhat of a waste unless you pay extra for HD package.
I no longer have my 4100 connected to a HT system but perhaps a call to them asking may help? There were so many of us with the same problem that you would have thought it would have been fixed ?

I didn't think it was a setup issue because the 3100's worked fine for about 3 years, and when I bought the first 4100 in December it worked great for about 6 mos. Maybe I should hire someone to check out my setup? I don't know a lot about these things. The cabling was already setup when I moved in.

Hi, does anyone know what the best way is to use a Toshiba RD-XS 34 dvd recorder with a Bell expressvu 4100 receiver for recording. Is there an IR code that you can use for the dvd recorder to start the recording to work with the 4100? If anyone has any experience with these 2 systems please let me know. It's a real pain setting the both up for recordings. Thanks

Had same problem. Four units bought and activated all at once. Took several weeks to get all cables run. Ended up having to call to get each unit re-activated individually as they were connected. Real pain spending 45 minutes each time when all were supposed to be done at once. Might be same problem ?

I also own the 4100, when I bought it 2 months ago everything worked fine, except the guide is way too white. Now when I jump to certain channels, there is no sound. The only way to get sound back is to channel up or down, and then go to back to that channel? Obviously there are bugs in this unit, just hope it doesnt get any worse. I also notice that when u turn it off, it stays fairly warm, almost hot, anyone else notice this?

I recently set up a 4100 that is getting audio dropouts on the digital optical outputs. Analog works fine. The 4100 is on a separate shelf. I searched the threads and saw several references to this problem, but I'm not sure of the current status.

Is this a hardware problem that can be solved by replacing the 4100 with another one? Does everyone have this problem with the 4100 and optical or has someone got it working? Would replacing the optical cable help? Has anyone contacted BEV and got a resolution? Thanks for any help.

Currently have a 6100 with Toshiba 52" HD (love it). Just purchased 2 x 4100s for my CRT TVs (they work great). I would like to purchase a 37" LCD and use one of the 4100s to watch SD on this new monitor. The best connection from the receiver is s-video (no component?). What type of signal will I be able to get, 480p?. I am a little worried about the PQ. Will it be crisp or soft?
Anyone using a simular set-up. How will the picture compare to DVD using component on this new set.

I was an early buyer of the 4100 and have had audio dropouts with Dolby Digital since day one (PCM is fine). In that time I've wasted many hours with BEV technical support, listening to their repeated runaround: "check your cables, reset the unit, make sure you have the latest software, etc."

Finally they sent me a new 4100 - same problem. They have had ample time to work the bugs out of the 4100. I've concluded that they are simply liars, unwilling to admit there is a problem.

I assume there hasn't been a customer uprising because most people use analogue or don't subscribe to the Movie channels (or are fine with PCM).

I too get the Dolby Drop out about every 30 Minutes.
I Want this fixed, but as usual, i complain to bell about it, and it never gets fixed no matter how many people ask.

It has notthing to do with you're wires, this is a software problem that bell could care less to fix.
