Nokia just refuses to fix my phone...

i called nokia usa about an out of warranty repair for the camera on N71, they can't help me and direct me to Europe's Nokia site...

Nokia in the United Kingdom says they cannot answer inquiries outside of their region....

it is difficult for me to believe they operate like this...

Nokia offer 2 year European warranty on all of their phones, so are they just refusing to repair it as you're not an EU citizen?

This has been going on for quite some time now. I've written a blog post about it here if you care to leave your concern.

I hope 2007 brings a solution to this issue. I believe consumers became aware of the warranty issue when the N-Gage was released due to the fact that here in the US the N-Gage only had a 3 month warranty because it was considered a gaming device. Unfortunately, things haven't changed since that time.

Couldnt have said it better. I'm really starting to get nervous as phones like the N93 and N95 will more than likely never be picked up by US providers and we will be stuck with expensive paper weights. The features available and coming in the near future spell tons of possible issues and we are going to need support. GPS, FP1, New Browsers....wifi...30fps video....3d gaming....that's a lot of things that can go wrong. Gone are the days of a loose battery cover and an 8890's screen losing connection. We're talking about real problems now.

That link doesn't lead to a blog.
So if I've understood it right, you bought the phone in the US with a year's warranty and needed it repaired after warranty expiration ?
Nokia CS USA said Nokia Europe might help you, but they say you need to have bought it or be resident in Europe ?
I'm not sure why you feel aggrieved.
After all, you're not being denied something that you bought.
You bought a one-year warranty, but you want a two-year warranty.
Surely the only way you'd be entitled to a two-year Euro warranty would be if you'd bought the phone in Europe ?
I'm not saying that it's right that Nokia USA only offer a year as opposed to two - but OTOH, they're not dishonouring their contractual obligations to you.

I think he is saying that he would like to pay Nokia to repair his phone. That is standard operating procedure once a product is out of warranty.

If he bought the phone through legitimate US channels (nokiausa, etc), then this is pretty poor form on Nokia's part.

You mean I posted all that for nothing ?
Situation (as I now understand it) sucks the big one.
But wouldn't it be cheaper to sell it on eGay as faulty and just buy another ?

My apologies.
We moved home and are still waiting for Tiscali broadband to transfer our connection here (5 ph*cking weeks, FFS !), so we're back to the joys of dial-up.
So pages often stop loading half-way and sh*t.

I don't think some of you may understand what this guy is saying. Nokia won't repair the phone for any price. Nokia USA is telling him that, essentially, "You didn't buy a USA-released handset, therefore we will not help you." They then refer him to Europe. Nokia Europe is telling him that they will only repair it if it is a shipped back to a European address.

I experienced this very issue, and I agree it is poor form for Nokia. There should be NO reason why they cannot fix the phone in their European repair center, and then ship it back to a U.S. address. (They could even bill him for the cost of doing so.) But, they won't.

I went through this with them as well. I can sort of (but not really fully) understand that they cannot fix it in the U.S. due to not having parts in the U.S. for a non-U.S. phone. But I see no excuse for Europe.

When I first tried this last year, the issue was compounded by the rudness of the Nokia U.S.A. "customer service" representative. He looked up the IMEI in their database, and then told me that he wouldn't help me. He then lectured me on importing a European handset to the U.S.

no, I'm not even trying to get the phone fixed under the warrenty....

I inquired about OUT of warrenty repair, they said they won't touch the phone because it's not one of the phones sold at the Chicago and New York stores or on the N-series USA site....

so I can't get it fixed at all by Nokia USA, even if it would cost more money...

Nokia UK says I have to be in Europe for them to respond to my inquiries...

ebay

yeah, I tried a cellphone repair shop here, but they didn't have the camera to replace it at the time....

now that the N71 is available in the USA I'm going to try them again, or another shop that deals with import cell phones....

yes, that's what I'll prob do...

or actually buy it from the official website...

the camera is not REQUIRED, it's just the idea of having a $300 phone that isn't fully functional that doesn't agree with me....

other than that, I freakin' love the thing...

yes, this is my experience...

no one lectured me, but one of the sales rep at the NYC store told me this was the "danger" of buying a phone off ebay.....

I emailed them, they won't be back in their offices until Wed. Jan. 3rd

Well, the nokia rep is correct, no?

When the n95 comes out, i'll get it from Importgsm - I'll pay the extra $50 up front than buy from someone off ebay. If something were to happen to the phone, i know Importgsm would stand behind it.

But yeah, all this doesn't you help right now - your only choice might be to wait till Jan 3rd.

LOL...dont touch Darlas site then. I've got Verizon Fios w/ 30mb downloads and Darlas site is one of the few that push it's limits. It might be that her blog doesnt upload nearly as fast as my download but it's still a loaded site.
Still love it though

Maybe this is a stupid idea but:

Call Nokia Europe. Tell them you live in Europe but you are currently in the USA for the next 6 months on business. Tell them you will pay for the extra shipping but you need your phone shipped to the USA when repairs are complete because you won't be home for 6 months.
