I have had the same issue. ATT wasn't much help on the phone, but when this happened last time i got a new SIM from the store and that fixed it....until now. (2 or 3 weeks?)
 
I must be weird, because I can't stand t9 and I love the qwerty keyboard in landscape mode. I can enter text faster than any other method.

I am really loving this phone and when more programs come out I will love it more.
 
I have a Euro 5800 with product code 0558982 and got the v40 update. Everything seems good so far. Kinetic scrolling works well, contacts bar on the homescreen is cool, but it gets rid of the calendar entries and I like seeing those every time i look at the phone.

I also really like that the keyboard changes when I rotate the phone. Should have been there from the start, but better late than never I guess.
 
I wouldn't be so sure about that. We're all hoping it will get it. But how many times has nokia purposely NOT given us something like this in an update when they could easily do it. In fact they've never done it once, so this would be the first time in their entire history. Something to think about. Also the 5800 is a mid tier device. They might give it to the n97 and force people to upgrade just to get it.

For example why don't we have the same homescreen as the n97? At least give us 2 rows of app shortcuts. But we still get nothing. So think about it.
 
First post on the 5800. I love the T9. Haven't even tried the full keyboard. I still have problems using it in the car, I cant feel the keys like on the E51 so I guess I have to learn voice commands. The bluetooth stack is much better than on the E51. Connects to the car stereo with ease whereas the E51 disconnected every time I received a text.
 
The new version shows up as the identical version, but when you actually install it and then go to the about menu, it shows a higher build number.

Anyway since that install there haven't been any crashes, so it actually seems good to me. But there be no noticeable differences so sup prob not worth it to upgrade.
 
it takes awhile. it was like that for me too. when i first installed it, the english with street names didn't exist. so i just dled the surfer dude for kicks. then a few days later when i check (after just ovi maps a few times) it shows up and i dled it.
 
great i upgraded to V40, but the chinese display/input hack via phoenix doesn't work anymore, it wouldn't boot. I'm back to using PURE NAM fw now, back to seeing squares = =
 
Okay, people .... here's what I've noticed in v31:


Sound quality thru headphones and using 3.5mm out is better

When tracks or albums are deleted in Music Player, a % is shown as they are deleted.

MUCH quicker screen rotation, HOWEVER, the random accelerometer bug (where it just stops working) is STILL there in this FW.

apparently, there is a new maps version although I haven't tried it. I don't use Ovi Maps... only Google Maps.

it added the "IM" program in the Applications folder, which, for obvious reasons, I don't use. Useless to me as it is most people I'm sure.

NOTICEABLY faster browsing... screens refresh quicker, better touch response, although still uses internal memory quite a bit. Also I've had ONE crash since I updated so it's not totally ROCK solid yet but I can easily deal with it.

no homescreen changes that I can see

missed call indicator light bug MIGHT be fixed.... I haven't seen it happen yet.

NO KINETIC SCROLLING in this update.... in menus OR browser

same overall touch response IMHO except for browser (see above)

seems like it boots with a bit more RAM (if i reboot then close all apps I have like 55mb ram) ... not sure if the actual MEMORY MGMT is better or not yet.

That may be true but have you looked at available ram at startup on the 5800, about 40% less than the n95's and less than the n85 at startup.

Web browser is a mixed bag

The web browser of Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is about the same as on the latest S60 3rd edition devices. This is a real pity. A great browser already, it could've simply kicked butt on a touchscreen device. But not this time, folks. Apparently Nokia either lacked the time or the will, so we're left with not the best touch-optimized version of the browser we know and appreciate.

Panning is the only thing that is done by sweep gestures here, and zoom is controlled by tapping on the screen. However the three zoom steps that are controlled via taps aren't the most suitable we can think of. Those include fit to width, fit to height and a third one, which seem to have no reasonable explanation. The first two are however always assuming that you use the handset in portrait position, which gets quite annoying at times.

The web browser has much room for improvement

Furthermore, even if you happen to be in portrait mode and choose the fit-to-width zoom level, the text does not automatically center onscreen. Instead you will have to align it manually, which is nonsense really.

At least the page rendering algorithm is quite good, making all the pages look as if browsed from a desktop PC. The high resolution is also a welcome bonus here, as it allows more content to fit on the screen.

Finally, the web browser has full support for both Flash and Java, which means that you can enjoy flash videos straight from your browser without having to use the mobile versions of sites like YouTube.

So, generally speaking, the first S60 touch-browser is quite a disappointment. The only advantage over previous versions is sadly not touchscreen, but display resolution. And that's seriously undermined by the not so good software implementation. We certainly hope Nokia invest enough effort to make one of the most important applications more user-friendly.
 
Did the obvious stuff like turn off and remove battery, etc?

Now I want sling player and I'll basically have the same usability as I have with my N95-3 ('cept camera quality, obv.).
