Nokia 5800 XM NAM(850/1900): Reviews, Issues, Tips, Tricks & Support Thread!!

the operamini icon i have is ugly as well. it's all blocky lol. but oh well, i'll just live with it since it's the signed version from the ovi store. i hate when it asks me if i want to connect all the time

So, two days I bought a "one-week old" 5800 XM NAM off a guy. Last night I suddenly noticed that my new phone wasn't receiving any text messages, though it was sending them.

I began searching various forums and discovered that there seems to be a bit of an epidemic of this failure in Nokia phones, with no clear consensus on what to do to resolve the problem. In some cases, it seemed that the only solution was to change phones. But, here's what I did.

First, I backed up my phone using the Backup feature. Then I did a hard reset by dialing *#7370#. After this I was still unable to receive any text messages.

Next, I called Fido and asked them to disable and then re-enable my SMS service. The rep said that he had heard that helped in some cases. But nope, not in mine.

Third, I reinstalled the latest software update** 20.0.214 (guessing), and still no change.

Fourth, I got in my car (sorry, I would have used my bicycle but I'm ill today) and drove to a Fido kiosk. I asked the rep to help me investigate the possibility that my SIM card was defective. She put my SIM card in another phone, and it still couldn't receive any text messages. Next, she put her SIM card in my phone and it could receive text messages. Great, at least we know that the phone is not defective! She asked a customer service at the call centre to "totally reset my account" (her words), after which I was once again able to receive text messages.

If you're having problems, try these steps, and good luck.

** [Note, reinstalling the latest software update required me to dig out my old Windows PC, since Nokia PC Suite refused to install in Windows XP running in Parallels on my Mac. And my old PC didn't initially have enough room left on the drive for the install so I had to spend an hour deleting apps and data].

Is the accelerometer sucking a$$ on this phone for anyone else?
It takes at least 5 seconds for it to switch from landscape to portrait and vice versa. Also sometimes it doesn't even recognize that I have turned it and it doesn't even respond at all. Is there a way that we can adjust the sensitivity?

I'm doing all I can to like this phone but it's not working :disappoin

There's a few people who installed phonenetinfo and it reported the cpu as 402mhz. Not sure why its off but it certainly read higher than stock cpu was supposed to be.

Yes. PPM file is only the language pack. My 3G is working awesome along with full Chinese support on my RM-428 0577454 Nokia 5800. You can read the dailymobile forum's thread for more info.

lol i understand completely. we all go through this when we buy a new phone. i bought this phone with the intention of it being my beater phone/practice phone. so i had rather low expectations, in fact i was hoping it would be on par with winmo phones (in terms of touch sensitivity) at least. but to me, it's definitely better than that, and with the new apps coming out. it just keeps getting better and better. the camera still sucks though lol can't fix that.

with regards to texting while driving, yes it's more dangerous lol. cause you can't tell where the buttons are, but at least you can feel the feedback once the button is pushed. i actually use the handwriting recognition for texting while driving lol. it's easier, and if you take the time to set it up, it's actually quite efficient

Anyone has problem with setting Yahoo mail with this phone? I can access my Gmail just fine but not for Yahoo, it keep asking for user/pass.

don't think there is a way to do that. on the n97, i'd just used a widget comingnext or something like that and it displays like the next 7 days on your home screen, and continuously scrolls as well

Don't know about the free version, but Quickoffice Premier 6 is on sale for 50% off right now.

The free version was read only, and I think it was one of the things that got lost in the transition from Download to Ovi Store (along with the Zip Manager app).
