Nokia 5800 XM NAM(850/1900): Reviews, Issues, Tips, Tricks & Support Thread!!

Does anyone know what dictates a "swipe for answer?" when a call comes in? Sometimes it will and sometimes its just the 4 button option before the v40 upgrade. I tried to narrow it down to like 1 touch dialing contacts or contact homescreen contacts but it has done both versions for those contacts. Anyone?

Thanks Dinan!

I've used the phone excessively today so I expect some hang ups ect... I have had the white screen of death about 10 times today though, which is a little upsetting. Mainly the phone will crash with opera mini open. I have a long long list of opera mini bookmarks and most of the time I can't even scroll down to the bottom of my bookmarks without it freezing or restarting the phone. Not being able to use opera mini makes web browsing somewhat useless for me as I use opera mini as my main browser. I did find that when scrolling through my long list of bookmarks that if I use the stylus to move the small red bar to move down the list then opera does not crash right away. Has anyone got a way around this??

Has anyone been getting complaints during a call of breaking up or choppy audio call quality? I've been getting complaints and its like clockwork the second my phone drops from 7 bars to 6 the caller claims i'm breaking up. But their end always comes thru fine. I'd think i would here their audio break up as well during one of these complaints.

I personally did not like Handy Shell. Makes the screen look too cluttered. Way too much stuff on there. Wonder if we will at some point be able to use homescreen widgets like the N97.

guys, do me a favor and report the opera mini crashing when you touch the very top and bottom of the screen as a bug lol. i want that thing to stop crashing when i'm trying to hit back sometimes

On 5800 its very easy for me to scroll my contacts. Just drag the bar to the general area, then use the page up/down by pressing in the empty space below/above the scroll bar. Its very effective for contacts or especially music playlist.

But i do want kinetic scrolling. It would just add a level of completeness to the OS.

One thing i noticed playing with my roommates android last night, capacitive screen web browsing kinda sucked when trying to click links surrounded by many other links. No matter how much i zoomed in my fat thumbs just kept pressing the wrong link. On my 5800 i don't even have to zoom and i get it first shot with my fingernail. Maybe there's a trick i don't know about.

i don't think its a speaker defect, more like a SW problem. as mentioned earlier, on every song. if you go from maximum (or any previous volume level) and down one and back up again, speaker is fine. it also does this with my ear piece for calling as well. the first 2 rings, it sounds like it's under water, then the next 2 it's fine. weird.

I just got a 5800 NAM, and this is my first Nokia touch screen. I really like it so far, but I have a few questions. I'm sorry if some of these have been covered already in this thread (it's just so long).

I'm wondering about the applications in the App. update. Here are the ones that show up:

Ovi Maps (I know about this one, but I'm not sure I want to mess with it. Google maps does the job for me)

Live TV 1.2 (I'm not sure this is relevant to the NAM market)

Mail for Exchange 2.9 (Mine is working fine, but is it worth the update?)

Nokia Messaging 10.1 (What is this update? My SMS and email client are working great and I don't want to mess them up)

Ovi Contacts 1.20 (What is this? Do I need it?)

Ovi Store 1.5 (I know what this is)

Python for s60 2.0 (What is this? Do I need it?)

Scribble 0.2 (What is this? Do I need it?)

My other question is about when to use the red end key. I have noticed that when I try to press Exit from the Messaging App, that sometimes (not all the time) I get a warning that connections will be lost. If I press the red end key, it seems to close the program without any trouble. Does it matter when I use the red end key and when I use the Exit on screen?

Oh, and I'm looking for case recommendations. I don't want leather or hard, clear plastic. I ordered a resin case from DC Mugen off ebay. What other cases should I be looking at? What do you think about the otterbox cases?

Can someone explain me how a T9 can be faster than a full virtual qwerty in landscape mode? I don't quite get it.

Main reason why I got rid of my N95... such a pain to type with a T9. I liked typing on the full qwerty of the 5800. So faster.

So yeah, I'm curious... I don't have the phone in my hands yet (tomorrow) but when I used it, the full qwerty seemed alright.

yes its a known bug that opera crashes when touching those parts of the top and bottom. however i have not once crashed it hitting the back button.

ironically, i have had VERY stable experience using opera mini. until today when i upgraded to the new version. 3 days ago opera mini quietly released a slightly updated version for the 5800, so i installed it today, and CRAP it crashes all the time now. it was pretty stable for me before this upgrade. so dont upgrade!!

the 5800 if the page isnt fully loaded will not allow u at all to scroll, so there is a period here and there where u have to wait so to speak before u can even use the touch, dont get me wrong the way the pages look and the browsing on the 5800 would be miles better if the touch was implemented better, having to use your finger nail is tedious and whether u mastered it or not is not the case, its the fact that you need to use your finger nail to have a decent browsing experience.
here is an article from nokia blog

The default web browser on my Nokia 5800 (NAM v20) is too slow for my liking, so I?ve been using Opera Mini. It looks like they silently updated it to version 4.2.14320 on May 12th. No announcements are found on their site or forums. A minor update like this could most likely mean bug fixes. I didn?t find any new features.

Note: Nokia 5800 North American (NAM) device with firmware version 20 was the current version at published time.

You can download the new version by going to mini.opera.com on your phone or computer.

I never complained about the web browser on my previous non-touchscreen phones like the Nokia N85, E71, and N95 8GB, but the one on the 5800 is frustratingly too slow for me. I already complained about this in a video earlier when I reviewed the Nokia 5800?s browser. I hope firmware updates will solve this problem.

I don?t like the user experience on Opera Mini when entering a web address or filling out textboxes and message boxes. On the other hand, it is a lot faster and more accurate in loading websites than the default one on the Nokia 5800. Another downside to Opera Mini is that you won?t be able to view embedded Youtube videos.

He even has a video showing you.

Its not about disliking the phone its about calling it like it is. it has a great screen and great resolution but the browsing experience leaves alot to be desired.
