Nokia 5800 XM NAM(850/1900): Reviews, Issues, Tips, Tricks & Support Thread!!

I finally solved my MfE calendar sync to google issues. See the following post by digo

The key is to uninstall MfE from the phone and reinstall from the nokia business website. This gives the older version which does not have the system error bug. Now when it can't find the server it immediately allows you to enter all fields manually.
Already synced and it looks perfect!

You just don't know how to use it.

You aren't meant to use it if you are close to something you want, then you just drag the screen.

It is used for skipping something, like parts of a webpage, if you are looking past ads for example.

If you have a lot of songs for example, then it is a pain in the ***, since when you use the scrollbar but then you will go through your songs so quickly you won't know where you currently are in your list of songs until you stop scrolling and read. So you have to scroll, stop and see where you are, scroll, stop and see where you are.

With a flick, you just flick and watch, and if you are close to where you want and you want to stop, you just tap/hold the screen and it stops scrolling right away.

It's been my experience that an "i" designation at the end of an existing phone's model number usually means an improvement for that model number. It's usually a feature that gives it extra functionality that the existing model lacks. It's less than an upgrade (or downgrade, 5530) that does not require a new model number. It's usually extra hardware added for additional features that simply can't be enabled by firmware updates. Maybe it has T-Mobile 3G radios in it, in addition to AT&T. Well that is my rumor and speculation :D

yeah dont get me wrong, i eventually want to go back to high end Nseries. but for now, since i'm already using my e71, which has quite frankly bored me since i dont use email, i dont NEED qwerty and actually prefer T9 anyway, it just seems like i might as well use a 5800 with its great screen rather than this e71. i basically surf the web, watch youtube, text message, and listen to music, and use google maps. i am slightly worried about the lack of hard keys, for example if i gotta fire off a text message while in my car, will this be even more dangerous with touchscreen?

i just dont know how i will feel with it. i like T9. i actually went to att store and played with some of the samsung touch screen phones, practicing typing in landscape mode. it certainly takes getting used to. there's no way to let me thumb FEEL its way around without me looking at the phone. this could be a problem. but i really want that high screen resolution. damn i'm so undecided. the 5800 can be a practice phone for me, either move on to the n97 or the n86, depending on how much i like the touchscreen.

i am just worried that once i pull the trigger, i'm gonna get the 5800 and then the newness will wear off and i'll be like wtf was the point of THAT!? does that make sense to anyone?

Am I missing the boat on "how to tether on the nokia 5800?". I installed joiku light, and while the principle is extraordinary to have your own wifi hotspot, I cant really tolerate the slow speeds. Tethering seems to maybe more practical. Has anyone tethered their laptop/netbook with a 5800? How did you do it? ...Thanks...Tom

It's not that sometimes it's easier to use scrollbars, it's that sometimes it's IMPOSSIBLE to do without them.

How do you get to the end of a very long document, for example a 1000 pages long book open in a browser? I tried the Symbian browser, Opera Mini 5, Opera Mobile 10, Opera Mobile 10.1 beta and Skyfire but no one of them allows me to reach the end (or middle) of the book. After several minutes of flicking I just got tired. I could not find 9.** opera, maybe it has scrollbars...

Weren't earlier firmwares implementing scrollbars? What's the latest one that had it?

Really stupid question but i can't figure it out. When trying to pair up my bluetooth headset i navigate to the Bluetooth screen and i can see the other tabs (i assume one of them is the pairing tab) in the background but they are greyed out and i cannot select them. Am i missing something here?

the speaker distortion was about 40% of the reason I returned mine to Amazon. I couldn't stand it considering most of my ringtones are bass heavy, it was a pain to listen to.

WOOT WOOT 1,000th post. Been waiting since '05 for this :D hah jk but wooo lol

An official update to the Nokia 5800's sold in the USA might be very near. On the Nokia website, they are advertise 4.0.0.005 and state the following improvements
-improved touch screen scrolling
-new version of ovi maps 3.0
-ovi contacts added
-sw update application added
improved wi-fi performance

The first site I visited was mobilespeedtest.com.

Right now, after browsing the web, connecting it to the usb, which consumes about 5MB RAM just having it connected - 49.7MB free.
