That's just it! I downloaded from google directly. I first reinstalled it. Then I even uninstalled and reinstalled. I don't have 3.0.1.6. I have an older one 2.3.5 or something. It defaults to that without giving any choices. :befuddled

I don't HAVE a 'use gps' option in the menu.:silly:

I downloaded it from the mobile google page on my phone. So todays challenge is to figure out how to force install the newer version.

On the desktop I can choose different phones to download the software for. I chose S60, but of course it won't let you DL it from their.

On the cellphone it doesn't give you any options, it just defaults to ONE 'install now' link and that's it.

I just installed the latest firmware, and it seems to be working fine. I'd like to do a hard reset to restore my missing Home Screen calendar entries, but I don't want to have to reinstall all of my existing software. If I do a full backup to memory card, do a hard reset, then restore from the memory card, will I have my existing software back? Will a restore mess up my new operating system? Other problems with this procedure?

Thanks.

ok so I talk on my 5800 maybe 1/week or so, mostly text. Now last 3 times I have called or been called when the conversation is over the red, white and green button stay lite but the rest of the phone crashes. I end up taking out battery and rebooting. Anyone else? Any suggestions?

After I upgraded to v40, I'm able to have both the contacts bar (at the top) and the shortcuts at the bottom. But there is an irritating horizontal line. How do I get rid of it? Looks like the horizontal line/bar is meant to carry some other status. Not sure, how to make use of the bar or get rid of the bar.

My 5800 bricked itself on the last update and I had to send it in to Nokia. When I got it back and reinstalled my backup, it was still having the same issues with 'idling hot' and burning thru the battery life.

I did a hard reset and totally reloaded the software from scratch, leaving off anything that 'wasn't trusted'. My phone now works flawlessly, battery life is great and no spontaneous reboots.

The V31 firmware for HK (V23 langauge pack) is not available yet, so far only the V30 HK firmware
I'm also wondering why.
If you just need trad chinese, you might go for Taiwan firmware w/ V24 language pack.

Is there some app/program switches profiles automatically depending on calendar entries, i.e. if I have a meeting on my calendar, it should automatically go to Silent for the duration of the meeting, and then switch back to normal.

My guess is v50 is the last firmware. Also keep in mind it won't support apps for the new OS being released next year, so other than warranty don't expect much support. v50 has added many things that weren't in the phone originally.

If it's in your budget, it's a good little phone.

nah i don't think that is the case. i had that problem with the settings too before. even though it said it was embedded, i still entered in my own and then that becomes embedded. and it's worked ever since. i never use it anymore though since i just cook my own fw now

Ever since updating my NAM Nav Edition to v40 on Monday (I think), the phone has initiated an data connection on a daily basis for no apparent reason. It's about 20k total data, I'm on prepaid w/ AT&T and don't have a data plan, so the cost can add up. Prior to updating I never had any unintended data connections, so I can only think that something either in v40 or that got installed with v40 (e.g. Ovi Contacts) is doing it. Anyone have any ideas? Or, is there a program that I can install that will tell me exactly what programs are initiating a data connection? The built-in call log is vague, to say the least.

Thanks in advance!

Older NAM firmware did not have the server profile, so you could enter your own. Now that the profile is embedded you cannot. If you try to create a new profile it will give you an error when you use the Nokia server name (Server ID already in use) and will not save the new profile.

Any attachments would be included in the 6 megs of Messaging from the 1st screen shot. It's weird I just looked through all the folders on the phone memory and could not find anything that would even come close to filling up 61 MB. Thanks though!

I cannot seem to find any way to scroll through very long pages in the browser. There are online book libraries that have books as a single html/txt page that could be 100k Nokia screens long. In my older phones I used vertical scroll bar to get where I need and flick from there while reading. But on Rogers Nokia 5800 (firmware v31) those are not functional. I've also installed all browsers I could find, all versions Opera and Opera Mini, but all of them allow only navigation using finger flicks and you cannot use stylus to scroll. So it looks like a firmware limitation. I spent an evening trying to solve this, saw a lot of this question asked around, but never answered.

Is there any solution or work around to this? Is it possible in later debranded firmwares? I cannot believe that Nokia intentionally made it absolutely impossible to navigate through very long web pages...

The only partial work around I found was installing old Opera Mini 4.2. It has vertical scroll bar but has no full screen mode :crying:

Related, is it possible somehow to enable volume button for page navigation in browser?

The FM radio CAN play through the speakers. You just plug in a headset and activate the radio, go to settings and choose "activate speakers"
