Nokia 5800 XM NAM(850/1900): Reviews, Issues, Tips, Tricks & Support Thread!!

The best way at least how i do it is go to the inbox. Then single click a message and hit the reply quick shortcut on the bottom. Then type the message and press the green call button to send. Its the quickest way unfortunately.

Yeah I know what you are saying, but I just don't want to mess anything up. I will give Nokia a few more months to release the rest of the updates (officially) for the remaining product codes. If there is nothing by summer, then I will probably do the whole change the product code thing. I just don't like messing with the phone like that if I don't have to.

For example, I updated to the new Ovi Maps (even though I prefer google maps) and after the update, Ovi Maps would not even open up. I then did a hard reset, and somehow lost a couple of apps that I think had come bundled with the phone. I think they were just trial versions of games or something, but the hard reset just erased them without my knowledge. I don't have the budget to be replacing these phones, so I really need to take care of the one that I have.

I've had mine for less than a year and there have been 3 or 4 updates already. Yes, it's annoying that NAM has to wait, but that many updates in a year is hardly lacking.

And if you're really tired of waiting the update IS out for the NAM Navi. Just change your product code and update through NSU.

Don't see how it could be settings, since the OTA update server profile is in firmware. That would mean Nokia screwed up the settings and FOTA should not work for anyone.

Okay, here's a question... I remember not too long ago there was a FOTA update that required the phone to be re-flashed with the firmware from a certain product code before the update would show. So, does that mean if I used product code "XXX" to flash my current firmware then change to product code "YYY" I won't see FOTA updates for "YYY" because my firmware was flashed using the "XXX" code? In other words, do I have to flash with firmware from code 0577454 to see FOTA updates for that product code?

I'm beginning to suspect that may be the case, and that's why I don't see the FOTA updates (they always seem to be for a different code than the one I last flashed with). Or is simply changing the product code with NSS enough (I know it's enough for NSU, but is it enough for OTA updates)?

Last time I saw an update in SW Update it just told me to use NSU when I clicked on it. :disappoin

I'm in the same boat here. Tried every NAM PC and then some and nothing shows any OTA updates (although NSU should show v51 for 0574994 since that shows in NaviFirm). Even tried rebooting my phone after each PC change, but no updates found, every time, every code. See some of my recent posts above.

[just read from post 700 till the end, hopefully I didn't miss anything :silly:. I'll try reading back all the way to the beginning, but my initial thoughts on this thread as tips and tricks, but most of the posts after 700 are mainly about defects, and new firmware and this 5800i. I want tricks!!! lol Please?]

Couple questions:

[1]Can I disable the need to double tap every FRIKKIN' menu item before selecting it?
[2]To send an SMS, why must I first finish typing the body, then go the overview page, THEN click the darn envelope to send it? I wish there was a way to SEND the message from when I'm finished the body :(.
[3]Recommendations on the best threaded SMS view app?
[4]Does anybody else find the green check mark (top left corner) a little bit PITA placed? It should be within a half fingers stretch distance since it's so frequently used, not so far away :(.
[5]GoogleMaps: I can't get the gps working on this just to roam. IE to show me where I am. In the Menu, I don't see 'use gps'. Help? Don't confuse this with getting gps to work. It works great with telnav, and the standalone navigation app, which shows map data + speed etc etc. The Maps.Google app just won't get gps. Now I haven't tried 'directions' yet, as I never needed that. I was just trying to get the darn locator to drop in on my location first.

Pros:
Very fast UI.
From the n95-8Gb I'm impressed.
So far (In my limited useage thereof) I'm meh. The price point on a 3yr is a tad steep, considering there's harsh competition at $50 and $100 cheaper.

Cons:
CHeapo manufacturing YET again (n96 fiasco owner (thankfully returned it)). What's with this haphazard plastic snap back cover? Reminiscent of the Razr, except these tabs feel like they're going to snap on me very shortly and I'll be stuck taping the back cover down LOL.

lmao, Shame-I fell for this one.

LOL...I wonder how many people talk to their parents all the while send Pr0n MMS to their friends LOL...shame!

Is this in the manual somewhere? Noted for reference.

i see. just provides more customize ability to the user. though most people that i've seen on the forums who complain about signing apps say that hacking is better. but don't you have to go through the process of getting a cert just to hack? makes it kind of pointless to me and then every update you gotta wait for it to be hacked again. but i guess for the few that need some usability like that, i can see them going through this.

Since v20 and memory reorganizer, N97 looks alot closer to 5800 than I thought. My wife's 5800 Nav is hovering stable at 57M free while my N97 is stable at 40M free. That's far closer than the 20-30M I was stable at with v12. If I ditched Nokia Messaging I would be in the mid 40s at the very least.

The problem is that Nokia was so far ahead of the game with the N95 that they spoiled Nokia fans for years. Now that other manufacturers have caught up and are better than Nokia at some things all people can do is complain. I say if you don't like it move on. I love the 5800 best Nokia phone I have owned in years, I don't have dropped calls, I don't have browsing issues (I prefer Webkit based Tear on my N810, but that is the best mobile browser bar none), music sounds good, pictures are decent. If you don't like that combination for $250 unlocked than you are crazy.

Not using any workarounds but truphone lists the s60v5 phones as compatible with the truphone app. I'm wondering if they added sip support in the latest firmware which isn't available for nam as of yet. Currently I have a ticket open with truphone to see what the issue is. Ultimately, I'd like to get the info to configure onto my n900, but need to get the 5800 working first :)

Most likely your phone has a software problem.
You can try a hard reset, then try an upgrade via NSU.
If everything else fails, search out how to download the correct firmware with navifirm and re-flash your phone, possibly using the dead usb method.
