Nokia 5800 XM NAM(850/1900): Reviews, Issues, Tips, Tricks & Support Thread!!

so i got mine coming in mail! i'm stoked!

i've never had a smart phone before, so i dont know how apps work. i know there's many of them for iPhone. would the same apps be compatible with the 5800 or are they phone-specific?

Historically, it has. I don't know specifically about the 5800, though. Either way, the built-in client is pretty crappy compared to Profimail, both speed and feature-wise.

I fully agree with you there. Either that or people need to come up with better algorithms to handle different list lengths and whatnot.

It's not at all that it's a terrible UI construct, I just have yet to see an implementation that does it truly correctly.

Yeah because its not like Nokia is the world's biggest manufacturer of cellphones and smartphones. They can't afford to hire programmers and PR people...oh wait, they ARE the world's biggest manufacturer or phones. If anything they should be far better at updates and communicating than anyone else due to their experience.

Also, Apple supports far more than just phones, they support desktops, notebooks, tablets, ipods and phones. And despite all those different products they still do a better job than Nokia at providing updates and timing of releases.

Honestly what a fanboy-ish argument.

Also, your formula makes no sense.

Just a dumb question on my part since I have been using google maps with my 5800 and GPS works like a charm!!!

1) are you using the google maps application you downloaded from google should be version 3.0.1.6 or are you using the "WAP" version of google maps online "http://maps.google.com"???

2) if you are using the application, start google maps, goto options>tools>use gps make sure you have that checked "On"

3) if you are using the application, you can also redownload it and insttall it again or even reset the google maps application to clear all its cache and stuff....

If Telenav works for you then google should work.....

You make a good point, and I think I'll give it another shot. I may wait for the next firmware update, however, which might improve scrolling. The experience of the 5800 is totally different from the E71, and I'd need to accept the tradeoffs.

This isnt nokia at large this is the 5800, u have an overview on all the nseries devices if you hit the #8 key or keep mini map in settings on, so its not fair to say you wont buy another nokia you can say another 5800.
Gaming on my n85 is very do able and zooming on webpages also is fine and the browser handles pages very well i dont crash. :buddies:

Moe , if you read on that page , you're basically updating through the air (firmware over the air) . This means that only certain components of the system will be updated not installing whole new OS with new components (like windows update) just create Nokia server and you up to go.

the nokia messaging is not the same one that is on your phone currently i dont think. it is a new much better looking email app, and honestly it blows the regular messaging away.

when you install apps, like the new nokia messaging, it doesnt replace the old one, instead you now just have 2 apps and 2 ways of doing things. so if you are ever worried about installing free stuff, dont worry because you can always chose to not use it or remove it if you wish.

also the red end key usually closes an app completely, except in the web browser, it just minimizes the browser to the background. everything else it closes. also if you ever want to minimize an app to the background, or go right to the homescreen, just double tap the menu button (middle button). and to see a list of running apps in the background, hold down the menu button (long press), this brings up the task manager. and i highly recommend getting a 3rd party task manager, it makes the phone much better using handy taskman or similar.

Yeah. I switched it back after reading yours and newtype's posts. I was just afraid that any data might accidentally go through, but the steps I took should take care of that.

Just placed an order for the 5800 European/Asian version. I understand that the difference between the NAM and Europe version is in the 3G frequency. Is there any other differences beside that in hardware and software? The NAM version is a lot cheaper but I need to use the phone in Europe a lot, that's the main reason why I pick the Europe version. Thanks.

Are you using the latest Maps 3.03 (or 3.04 beta)?

You have to download a voice that has TTS.

From the main menu go to settings (the little "wrench" icon on the lower left). Select Navigation, then Drive guidance and download a voice in your language of choice that says "with street names" in the name (ex: English (US)- with street names).

Do the same for Walk guidance.
