New Macross (Macross Frontier) - Talkback

ep 20

Wow right from the start the episode just sinks more and more into despair. Ranka singing with so much and summoning more Vajra it appeared because of it and then Frontier just being decimated by swarms of them.

Nanase looking like she's gonna need an eye-patch, Sheryl singing a heart-wrenching version of Diamond Crevasse (which looks to have caused a reaction with the one fold crystal she has. I wonder if somehow she sent out an SOS.

The President looking like he survived Leon's assassination attempt only to be killed off by him later in the episode and finally Klan confessing to Michel only to see him die protecting her during her demicronization process.

Next episode seems to deal with the aftermath and Klan looks enraged.

The animation on it, is fluid too.
It does have some nice deigns for the characters as well. I know there are a few that may have not liked Ranka, but I found her rather new and refreshing in the design department. Even if there is no reason for her hair to be able to stand up.

Some of the songs are woven in flawlessly... it can be just a tad on the over kill later on, but for the most part they serve the story well.

I am impressed it is finding footing with fans who were not already macross fans to begin with. maybe it will buck the trend and actually make it to these shores.

Good for you. Macross is a great series, Just remeber to look for the ALT first epiosde (It was a sneak peack several months before the series started) if you haven't already. And please try and check out the olders series, it makes watching Frontier all the better when you can place each nod and referance.

Wellcome to the Macross fanbase, there's no getting out...... trust me it's a lost cause to even try.

I found the Zentraedi character very annoying, I have a bad feeling she's just going to get played for laughs. The episode was just so-so, though the fact that Alto's father is apparently someone important is interesting. Of course, the music is a good thing.

I'm still on the fence, I'm waiting for this show to really impress me. Episode 2 was the best one by far.

I can't help noticing that whereas original Macross was about military pilots, in Macross Frontier the army is portrayed as a bunch of incompetent and bureaucratic schmucks. There's nothing wrong with focusing on an independent elite group instead, but I really wonder if this series will ever balance drama and action the way its predecessor did. I'm thinking it will be hard to build much of a war story to complement the drama if the the folks in uniform don't amount to anything more than mere background characters.

Obviously, we're still in full relationship development mode. I just hope that the series takes things somewhere once it finRAB its footing.

Probably already reported but- a big 2 page colour ad in the latest Gundam Ace announces that next month a 'Macross Ace' magazine will start publication. Effectively what Gundam Ace does with Gundam, this will do it with Macross (things like character polls, exclusive manga and art, merchandise news, etc). First issue comes out on the 26th next month (Jan 2009).

I doubt I'll be picking it up (I sadly seem to have missed the Macross boat ) but wanted to pass the news on for anyone who might be interested

Heh, I had to laugh toward the start of episode seven. Everyone, are you being cultural today? Yes, we're being cultural! We love you Sheryl!

So...in the future, technology lets us change our clothes on a whim if we want to do it that way?

Not much to say, the action certainly doesn't disappoint. The idea of the ship being a miniature Macross is pretty damned awesome. This mystery pilot that helped out Alto is an interesting plot point. It seems as though the Vajra assimilate things and program them for their purposes, although in that guy's case perhaps the programming is incomplete. Why intervene otherwise? I don't know about anyone else, but I'm getting a Teknoman vibe from this.

And the crap hit the fan blades with ballistic force.

Not only did Klan loose Michel she's also the last surviving meraber of the Pixie Squadron.

I wonder if she'll survive her vengeance tear.

The Monster driving Nurse looks like she's in a tough spot.

Having your Father mowed down by your Fianc

So...any ideas of when this airing will take place? I REALLY enjoyed the first episode, and it pisses me off they tortured us like that by giving us a small tease, DAMN THEM! But yeah...

I think we know why now Klan has Revy's VA for a voice. Hell hath no fury like a pissed off 40 foot tall woman out for vengeance.

The question of whether or not she survives is another matter entirely

You forgot fanservice. Supposedly there's already a ton of fanart for her popping up.

Still waiting till Episode 10 to provide a solid review.

Nice idea in theory, I just wonder if they'll have enough material. Gundam seems to get a lot more love per year than Macross, but I guess it'll at least stay alive for a few years.

Frontier wasn't too bad, although classic Macross (including DYRL) and Macross Plus and the Macross II movie still come first I think. Back then it was a solid military drama, whereas I see Frontier as an all-in-good-fun love letter to the franchise and its fans.

Where is that stated? I'm not saying you are wrong, but I'm just curious.

You know, I couldn't help but think back to the old Starflight PC video game from the 80's when this bit of info was revealed. Toward the end of the game, you learn that the fuel crystals you've been using for your ship (and what everyone uses) are in fact an intelligent life form.

As for episode 20, the rest of my thoughts (with a spoiler synopsis) is here.

Awesome ep.

Didn't Flasrabroadack 2012 show that Misa and Hikaru had a daughter? Well at this point she would be more than old enough to be the captain of the Megaload 1. If there are any current fighter pilot from that line they would be the grand children.

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if there was a scene that had Ranka having a crisis about why she should sing and meeting a wandering stranger in a park strumming on his guitar that gave her some advice.

"All units, Planet Dance!"

What's the deal with Ranka's belly glowing?

It seems like the new generations of Macrosses are lighter and much more maneuverable. It's going to make an awesome animation when it gets included in a SRW game.

Taking all bets on the new guy (well he's in the op. but still): Human, Zentradi, Human-Zentradi mix, AI construct, Protodevlin*, random kangaroo people the U.N. government likes to give expensive military equipment to like it was candy**, or other. Also his fighter did seem to have some strange characters (as in letters) on it.

*Macross 7 spoilers:
Yes there were only seven Protodevlin but two pairs of them were essentially the same beings so there's fudge room to say there are two Protodevlin not seen in Macross 7. Though I highly doubt when the remaining Protodevlin left the Galaxy they would have left any of their kind behind. Plus, why does a Protodevlin (well at least a complete one) need with a Valkyrie.

**Macross Dynamite 7 spoilers:
Well he doesn't have two toned hair.
What's the deal with the people of Zola? It would have made sense if they were the descendants of Zentradi that crash landed on the planet 14,000+ years ago, micronized for the most part to save on resources, developed a bit of a culture over the years, and then were discovered by human early during the explorations going on after Space War I; but that can't be the case since that radio drama going on in the background revealed they were marsupials.

Finally the long wait is over, with the passing of April 3rd Macross Frontier has started it's normal broadcast run. I can't wait for next weeks ep (since we've already seen the 1st ep back in Deceraber). For that reason I request to the moRAB that the thread's name be changed to simply Macross Frontier- Talkback.

Man 2007-08 been a good season for mecha fans.

Macross Zero spoilers ahead:

It has been confirmed that Ranka is the grand-daughter of Mao Nome. Mao is one of the Mayan people and in the line of Mayan high priest/priestess/shamans/etc. The Mayans are all direct descended of the Bird-Human (well it could be argued that all of humanity might be but the Mayans have a stronger link) and the Nome line has an even stronger connection. In addition to all that Mao received a blood transfusion directly from the Bird-Human.

As for the quarter Zentradi part it has been openly stated plus she can shrug off brief unprotected exposure to a near hard vacuum.

Yeah that's about the point where I double facepalmed.

Then there was that bit earlier where the Zentraedi were doing an extremely good impression of Stormtroopers...
