I welcome these two and any other HD channel. Even american networks started showing a few HD programs when they started, I don't see why this one would be any different as I'm sure HD shows will the norm in not too distant future.
CanWest Global now owns these two new(to expressvu) hd channels, so I would't expect the hd/sd ratio to improve. It might even decrease as new programming is expensive.
I'm glad they were added, but I agree the HD is pretty sparse. National Geographic is a bit disappointing. I never paid much attention to what was on the SD channel, but it seems more like Showcase or A&E than the content I expected. Really, Equator HD would make a far better National Geographic. It has the sort of content I would have expected to see.
Just to clarify again, the dropouts I get are on Showcase HD (838). I have a 9200 connected through optical cable to a Yamaha RX-Z9 receiver. The dropouts are on this channel only.
Yep, just noticed both in my guide too. Have it on NG right now, looks really good. I just moved from Rogers on Monday.. so I was only without the two channels for 3 days Not that I watched them all that much, but more HD is always good.
Although I agree, that we dont`t want to `niche`ourselves to HD death, both of those channels, offer a lot more IMHO than Treasure, Rush, Equator and Oasis combined.
Out of curiosity, and this might be another thread, which HD channels should BEV be adding if not these two
I too am stunned by how little HD is offered by NG HD. The highlight of their day seems to be a program about a dog handler/trainer in HD. Even more annoying is that a lot of their schedule seems to consist of retreads from Discovery etc. Based on what I've seen so far I doubt that NG HD is a service I would pay for when the free preview ends. Very disappointing!
I agree completely, the content on NG HD is very disappointing. I was expecting some top tier quality programs that resembled the content of the magazine. Instead, you get what appear to be retreads from the History channel (WWII programs ad nausea) mixed with a mix from Discovery and TLC.
I will say that the one program I watched completely in HD (something about kayaking in New Zealand) was decently shot and surprisingly the PQ didn't disintegrate with all the foaming white water and spray. Just seemed like it belonged on the RUSH channel more than NG.
The CRTC should enforce a rule whereby any HD designated channel has to have more than 50% true HD programming, otherwise they're wasting expensive bandwidth for nothing. You could take A&E, NG, and few others and have a single channel that combined their actual HD programming, like the good old days...
Perhaps this is why BEV opted to go with the High Fidelity channels and make us wait for these two. There might be a method to their madness after all.
I am looking forward to the show Damages on Showcase. The HD previews for this show on SC look to have very good picture quality. Both SC and NG have very limited offerings in HD, but it is still nice to have them. I have both Shaw and Bell so now maybe I will cut back on my Shaw sub and save a few bucks so I can afford the Bell increase!
Is there any way to actually tune these in? When you enter the numbers in, it jumps you to the next closest channel (I feel rather ashamed in even asking this)
I know the experts say that location has no bearing on satellite reception problems but I'm still not convinced. I've noticed that for those who include their location in their messages that more seem to come from Western Canada and Ontario than from east of Ontario. This may be simply because BEV has more customers in the west of Quebec but maybe someone should try to geographically correlate these issues. A pattern might emerge.
I'm in Prince Edward Island by the way. I don't see or hear the problems that many of you report. My TV is a SONY SXRD 60 inch A2000. STB is a 9200. Principal viewing distance is 8.5 feet. I would expect any artifacts to be visible at that distance.
It would be a crime to drop the "HI-FI" channels. They bring the world in gorgeous HD into our homes 24 hours a day seven days a week. They know how to use the 16:9 screen to its advantage unlike the major networks which are still stuck in the 4:3 soap opera world even when they offer a 16:9 picture.
The idea of mandating 50% HD content before granting a licence is a good one but I doubt that either the FCC or the CRTC have the guts to do it. They simply granted every SD service an HD licence thereby making it difficult for new and innovative HD services to get started. I shudder to think what HGTV HD (Mike Holmes in HD?) and Food HD are going to be like. Not worth the bandwidth.
Does Showcase HD just show the same schedule as Showcase SD? If so and if only a few shows are in HD then what a stupid waste of very scarce bandwidth. Ditto for National Geographic HD which seems to be a clone of Discovery, TLC and Discovery Civilization (or it the other way around?).
Why do we need these channels if this is the case?
I am a big fan of The Dog Whisperer and can now watch Cesar work his magic in HD! My wife and I are also fans of Saving Grace and now I can see the lovely Holly Hunter grace our screen in HD.
Showcase has all sorts of cool programming. I can see myself watching a lot of programming on this station.
As for the old Voom stuff. Well, I NEVER watch Rush; but some of the documentaries on the other channels are very well done. My wife seems to spend a lot of time watching these channels and the PQ is usually first rate.
Kudos to BEV for adding two channels I have been waiting for (especially Showcase).
